Grant Fisher and Abdihamid Nur compete in the men's 5000 meter final on Day Ten of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Track & Field Trials at Hayward Field on June 30, 2024 in Eugene, Oregon. "Their performances at an Olympic Games, in our own World Championships, provide world athletics with broadcast revenue from the International Olympic Committee and at a world championship level," he continued. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe defended his decision to pay prize money to track and field gold medalists for the first time at the Paris Olympics this summer, suggesting that the initiative could be extended to future games. The first phase focused on allocating funds to World Athletics' national governing bodies to support athletes and pay for projects. Coe, who is serving his third term as World Athletics president, deflected rumors that he may be in line to succeed Thomas Bach as IOC president.

Alexander Spatari | Moment | Getty ImagesU.K. inflation held steady at the Bank of England's 2% target in June, Official National Statistics data showed Wednesday. The headline reading came in above analyst expectations at 1.9%, according to economists polled by Reuters, and was in line with the previous 2% reading in May. Hugo Boss shares plunged as much as 10% Tuesday after the company cut its sales outlook, becoming the latest high-end fashion line to warn of persistent woes in the luxury sector. The German fashion house said Monday that it expects full-year sales of up to 4.35 billion euros ($4.73 billion), down slightly from a previous forecast of up to 4.45 billion euros. The company attributed the revised outlook to "persistent macroeconomic and geopolitical challenges" and cited China and the U.K. as particularly challenging markets. Shares pared losses slightly to trade down 8.8% as of 9:53 a.m. London time. The guidance cut is the company's second so far this year, after the retailer in March said that 2024 sales growth was likely to slow to 3% to 6%.

Earlier this year, Satya Nadella hammered out a deal that surprised everyone outside his inner circle at Microsoft. Mr. Nadella, Microsoft’s chief executive, had his eyes on a Silicon Valley start-up called Inflection AI. The company’s chief executive, Mustafa Suleyman, was one of the founders of the pioneering artificial intelligence company DeepMind. He had raised more than $1.5 billion in funding and hired top researchers for his new company, but he had a not-so-great reputation as a boss. Microsoft still shelled out more than $650 million to license Inflection’s technology, hired most of its staff and put Mr. Suleyman in charge of a more than $12 billion chunk of Microsoft’s business.

A 19-year-old man, Thuong Oo, stood in the middle of the group, shouting into a megaphone. The police had killed Mr. Oo’s 13-year-old brother, Nyah Mway, two days earlier and he was angry. Late on June 28, an officer shot Nyah after the boy had been seen with what turned out to be a pellet gun and was tackled to the ground. “I went to the hospital and they said they had a shootout with my brother,” Mr. Oo told the crowd. “But I watched the video and it said different things, so it doesn’t make any sense.”Many of those encircling Mr. Oo were members of the Karen, a refugee ethnic group from Myanmar, and almost all them were young.

Now, such technology appears to be on the horizon, with scientists unveiling a prototype spacesuit system that turns urine into drinking water. When spending these long periods on spacewalks, astronauts currently wear the familiar white puffy EVA suits, which contain a maximum absorbency garment. Above is a side view of the whole system, worn as a backpack. ‘Dune’ systemTo “promote astronaut wellbeing,” the researchers have designed a novel in-suit urine collection and filtration system, or “Dune” system,” Etlin said. Luca BielskiThe liquid would then enter the filtration system, a two-step apparatus that removes water from urine into a salt solution, with a pump then separating pure water from salt.

In this gilded echo chamber, Mr. Trump enjoys unwavering devotion — and collects the staggering price of admission. During the 2014-15 season — the last before Mr. Trump officially entered politics — The Times counted 52 fund-raiser events at Mar-a-Lago. More than two dozen midterm candidates had already held fund-raisers on the property when Mr. Trump made that statement. But that changed when Letitia James, the New York attorney general, sued Mr. Trump for exaggerating the value of his properties. And, unlike when Mr. Trump was president, “he was there a lot,” Mr. Rustmann said.

“Making It Work” is a series is about small-business owners striving to endure hard times. Over six months of weekly video calls, Ms. Schiro, 45, learned how to pare down her overloaded to-do lists. Making changes like adding a line to her email signature saying that she does not respond to messages sent after 6 p.m. seemed like “stupid stuff,” she said, but it took an outsider’s perspective to pinpoint these adjustments. “When you’re burned out, it’s hard to think of those things and implement them,” Ms. Schiro said. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted how and where people work, the World Health Organization recognized burnout.

Money problems can be an early sign of dementia

When a family member who has been fairly responsible with money all their lives becomes careless with their finances, it may be one sign of as-yet-undiagnosed dementia. “The harmful financial effects of undiagnosed memory disorders exacerbate the already substantial financial pressure households face upon diagnosis,” the researchers wrote. Two parents with dementia, one daughter’s efforts to reduce financial worryJayne Sibley, who lives in the United Kingdom, knows the pain and stress of dealing with the financial behaviors that can signal dementia. Her mother also would take money out of the cash machine two to three times a day and give it to anyone who asked. Of course, no amount of advanced financial planning can alleviate the heartbreak of watching a loved one with dementia decline.

Read previewBeing part of the financially independent / retire early movement sounds like the dream. Members of the "FIRE" movement prioritize living frugally to save and invest as much of their income as possible, creating a huge nest egg that enables them to retire early. Longevity is also a buzzy topic, and research suggests that people who live longer tend to have a strong sense of purpose. As many people get this purpose from work and their careers, could retiring early be detrimental to our health? But she said that evidence suggests the potential benefits of working or retiring vary from person to person.

Strong leadership requires decisive action, says CVS Health CEO Karen Lynch. "People are going to follow people that are decisive," said Lynch, whose company owns brands including the CVS retail pharmacy chain and insurance company Aetna. "If you're going to lead, you've got to know what direction you're going in." When her employees face a mental block and can't commit to a choice, she asks them a variation of the same question, she said: "What do you think? We'll teach you how to speak clearly and confidently, calm your nerves, what to say and not say, and body language techniques to make a great first impression.

Karen Lynch, the CEO of CVS Health, has a tip for striking the right balance: Share whatever directly helps you solve a problem or connect with someone else. Early in her tenure, she ran a company-wide town hall urging managers to take mental health more seriously. In an unplanned moment, she shared something she'd never told another colleague before, she said: When she was 12, her mother committed suicide. She also felt ashamed, anxious and embarrassed about it, so she spent much of her career being strictly about business, she said. But midway through the town hall, with 50,000 employees listening, Lynch realized she could help her co-workers understand why she felt so strongly about mental health.

Before the refinancing, Peloton would have needed to pay around $800 million toward its debt by November 2025. Now that it has refinanced, Peloton has eased investor concerns about liquidity and has the breathing room it needs to try to turn around its business. Peloton faces risks aheadWhile the refinance may have bought Peloton some time, it's far from a panacea. Under the terms, Peloton will now be spending about $133 million annually in interest, up from around $89 million previously. As of the end of March, Peloton had about 6.6 million members — woefully behind that long-term target.

Yet, in a year of elections around the world, politicians are largely ignoring the problem, unwilling to level with voters about the tax increases and spending cuts needed to tackle the deluge of borrowing. In France, political turmoil has exacerbated concerns about the country’s debt, sending bond yields, or returns demanded by investors, soaring. “Many (politicians) are not willing to talk about the hard choices that are going to need to be made. Despite growing alarm over the federal government’s debt pile, neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump, the main 2024 presidential candidates, are promising fiscal discipline ahead of the election. A judge in Massachusetts declared a mistrial on Monday in the high-profile murder case against Karen Read, the suburban woman who was accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer, after a night out drinking. The jurors began deliberating early last week, and twice signaled to the court that they were having trouble reaching a unanimous verdict. In a note to Judge Beverly J. Cannone of Norfolk Superior Court on Monday morning, they wrote that they had “fundamental differences in our opinions,” and that “consensus is unattainable.”The judge then read them last-ditch instructions about the importance of reaching a verdict. But hours later, the 12 jurors declared themselves deadlocked, and Judge Cannone declared a mistrial. Prosecutors said in a statement that they intended to try the case again.

Even excluding the technology sector, which trades at a robust 30.8 times earnings, the market's PE is a solid 18.3 times next year's earnings, according to FactSet. One place investors scour is the list of low PE stocks, which they perceive as offering attractive value because they are "cheap." U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell delivers remarks during a press conference following the announcement that the Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged, in Washington, U.S., June 12, 2024. The U.S. Federal Reserve and European Central Bank could move to cut interest rates in September as key data provides further signs that inflation is cooling in the U.S. and the euro zone, a Morgan Stanley strategist said Friday. "We're more optimistic that both the Fed and ECB will cut rates in September," he told "Squawk Box Europe." And I think, for the Fed, inflation is continuing to fall," he added. A majority of economists polled by Reuters now anticipate the Fed will cut interest rates from its current range of 5.25% to 5.50% this September, with a further trim projected later in the year.

LONDON — Harmful E.coli bacteria has been discovered at "alarmingly high" levels in the U.K.'s River Thames just days before elite rowers are due to compete there for the international Henley Regatta, anti-pollution campaigners have warned. River Action also found E.coli levels up to 10 times higher in March tests. James Wallace, CEO of River Action, accused the government and Thames Water, which manages water supply in the area, of failing to appropriately manage water hygiene levels. Thames Water did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment, though the BBC reported that it had dubbed the findings "alarmist" and said it was monitoring bacteria levels.

CNN —The Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday to allow the state’s ban on nearly all gender-affirming care for minors to remain in effect. The law bars Texas health care providers from providing gender transition surgeries, puberty-blocking medication or hormone therapies to those under 18, although exceptions are provided for intersex patients. Texas’ ban is similar to restrictions in nationwide as GOP-led states have moved to curb gender-affirming care for minors, expressing concerns over the long-term effects of such treatment — though major medical associations have deemed it clinically appropriate. More than 20 states have enacted restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors. The Biden administration directly challenged Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors, and the US Supreme Court announced this week that it will hear the appeal, which will determine whether states can restrict such care.
