Am account that reposts viral posts is among the big beneficiaries of Twitter's new monetization scheme. The "Internet Hall of Fame" account appears to have netted $100,000 from the scheme. Musk previously said that accounts based on "theft" of others' post would not get paid. The "internet hall of fame" account, which has 1.9 million followers and describes itself as highlighting the "best of the internet," in a screenshot Thursday was shown to have been paid $107,247.00. He didn't define exactly what he meant by "theft of posts," and it isn't totally clear whether Internet Hall of Fame would meet that definition.

Twitter announced Thursday it would start sharing ad revenue with some creators. Elon Musk has started sharing Twitter's ad revenue with a handful of accounts, hoping to incentivize the best creators to put their content on his platform. Twitter announced Thursday that creators would now be eligible to some of the company's ad revenue, "to help people earn a living directly" on the platform. But on the rare occasion Donaldson reveals how much ad revenue he makes, it is surprisingly little. Ad revenue traditionally aids smaller accounts who don't have their own brand deals — YouTube monetization is open to anyone with 1,000 subscribers.

For the first time since 1960, Hollywood actors and writers could be on strike at the same time. If the actors union, SAG-AFTRA, hits the picket lines, it would cause an even deeper disruption to the entertainment industry. Stakes were high enough with the writers' strike. The movement is having a moment, as has been evidenced by other unions — from teachers to truck drivers — joining Hollywood writers on the picket line. A combined writers' and actors' strike "could well go into the end of the year," Handel said.

When it comes to clothes, I like to try on the items in person and see the fabric quality before committing. The new feature is called "Trendy Beat" in the UK, and it's reportedly going to launch in the US as well, although TikTok hasn't provided details on that yet. Trendy Beat looks like lots of other online-shopping websites or apps. I tried out Trendy Beat in June when it was brand-new, so TikTok was offering major discounts, free shipping, and free returns to incentivize users to shop. Clothing repairs are favored by sustainability advocates, but they can be expensive. Beginning in October, the country's government will give a 7 euros, or about $7.79, discount for heel repairs and between €10 and €25 for clothing repairs, Le Monde first reported. Sustainability advocates favor clothing repairs as one way to slow the climate crisis and create a circular economy, in which we reuse existing resources and reduce waste. The organization found that the repairs can be expensive — stains cost an average of $17.34 to remove and other repairs cost up to $34. In April, the government doubled-down on discounts for citizens who repaired their home appliances instead of throwing them away.

But leaders face a common conundrum: Should they compare members of their team relative to one another or evaluate everyone independently? It can push out otherwise excellent employees who are averse to the dog-eat-dog culture that can grow out of stack ranking systems. It is possible to take this tendency into account when designing a relative ranking system based on objective criteria. Even in isolation, stack ranking systems don't "necessarily kill collaboration, provided you incorporate collaboration into the criteria," he says. "There's this notion that you can have a healthy level of competition and still foster collaboration," Georgiadis says.

Sleep Better at Every Age

Sleep training, the process of teaching babies how to soothe themselves at night and sleep independently, can start when infants are 3 to 4 months old. While sleep training can be taxing for everyone involved, it can lead to better sleep for the whole household. If your child is struggling to sleep through the night at this age, consider talking to a pediatrician about possible solutions. The problem: Insomnia can strike at any age: Around 20 percent of children have difficulty falling or staying asleep. Plus, the older we get, the harder it is to bounce back from a night of poor sleep, Dr. Roth said.

El Niño + climate change = heat records

CNN —Climate change combined with this year’s El Niño set a new world record for worldwide heat on Tuesday – 62.92 degrees Fahrenheit or 17.18 degrees Celsius. The WMO declared the onset of an El Niño Tuesday and warned governments to prepare for more extreme weather events as a result. This will be the first El Niño in seven years. The last very strong El Niño year – 2016 – also saw the previous record for worldwide heat that August. “It is El Niño on top of decades of human emissions of greenhouse gases.”There is no turning back, he said, but humans can likely slow the change.

SAO PAULO, July 4 (Reuters) - Chinese automaker BYD (002594.SZ) on Tuesday said it will invest 3 billion reais ($620.17 million) in a new industrial complex in northeastern Brazil, as it aims to boost local production to offer more competitive prices. The complex, made up of three plants, will be built in the Camacari industrial park in the northeastern state of Bahia, on land formerly occupied by a Ford (F.N) plant that closed in 2021. The announcement comes on the back of a reported push from the government to incentivize BYD to build a new electric car hub after Ford closed its plant in the state. One of the plants will be dedicated to production of chassis for buses and electric trucks, BYD said in a statement. A decision Monday by Saudi Arabia and Russia, the world's largest oil exporters, to cut production in an effort to push up oil prices is a bullish development for the Club's struggling energy holdings. Oil prices edged up Monday, with West Texas Intermediate crude — the U.S. oil benchmark — rising by 0.28%, to just under $71 a barrel. In this uncertain economic environment, the U.S. has repeatedly made clear its desire to keep oil prices lower. But if energy prices were to remain relatively suppressed, we would expect the year-to-date winners to continue their march higher, benefiting from more affordable oil prices. The value of the change-in-control payout hinges on Aslett's unvested shares and Mercury's stock price. In his resignation letter, Aslett said he was entitled to the change-in-control payout even though that change did not occur. Mercury said its board of directors disputed Aslett's claim to the change-in-control payout. Without it, Aslett would be entitled only to a $2.4 million severance package, a Mercury regulatory filing shows. But the contract stipulates that to be eligible for the change-in-control payout, Aslett also needed to resign for "good reason."

Americans still worry more about terrorism and other foreign policy issues than about China. “That’s percolated into the general public,” said Richard Herrmann, an Ohio State University professor who studies international relations and public opinion. A feedback loopSouring public opinion, in turn, may worsen U.S.-China relations. That might seem surprising; most Americans don’t pay that much attention to foreign policy, which is typically far removed from their daily lives. And once public opinion on a foreign policy issue calcifies, as it increasingly has on China, political leaders often pay attention to it.

Gina Raimondo, as secretary of commerce, is responsible for several of the Biden administration’s biggest swings at industrial policy, so it’s little surprise that she’s on board. I’ve assembled quotes from a variety of administration officials to give a sense of the diversity of thinking on worker-centric industrial policy. I’m giving the most space to Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, because his April 27 speech at the Brookings Institution was rightly seen as supplying intellectual scaffolding for Biden’s agenda. “Protecting our foundational technologies with a small yard and high fence.” The small yard means protecting only technologies that are truly matters of national security. He quoted Biden as saying that the two nations can and should cooperate on climate, macroeconomic stability, health security and food security.

CNN —The Federal Trade Commission sued Amazon on Wednesday, alleging that the e-commerce giant has tricked millions of consumers into signing up for its Prime subscription service through deceptive user interface designs. “Specifically, Amazon used manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs known as ‘dark patterns’ to trick consumers into enrolling in automatically-renewing Prime subscriptions,” the FTC complaint said. With Prime, Amazon is able to generate billions in revenue from subscriptions and incentivize customers to spend more time and money on its platforms. According to Wednesday’s complaint, Amazon took some steps in April, in response to FTC pressure, to simplify users’ ability to cancel their Prime subscriptions but before then had denied customers the ability to easily cancel their Prime subscriptions online. Other than contacting customer service, Amazon offered no alternative to consumers wishing to cancel apart from going through the Iliad process, the FTC said.

New York City announced a new law making $18 the minimum wage for delivery workers. "New York City is setting the tone for across America," Adams said during a press conference announcing the new minimum wage. Currently, most apps pay delivery workers, who are contractors and not employees, per order. DoorDash's spokesperson said many of its delivery workers are casual users who are supplementing income at their full- or part-time jobs. Grubhub, for its part, said the pay structure had "good intentions" but would have "serious adverse consequences for delivery workers in New York City."
