The German aerospace startup's shares plunged more than 60% before paring losses to 45% following the news. In all, Lilium was trying to raise a convertible loan of 100 million euros. European stocks are expected to open in mixed territory on Thursday, as traders await another batch of earnings reports, and as U.S. market declines weigh on global sentiment. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 index is expected to open 26 points higher at 8,281, Germany's DAX down 6 points at 19,377, France's CAC down 3 points at 7,495 and Italy's FTSE MIB up 17 points at 34,532, according to IG data. It's another busy day of European earnings on Thursday with Barclays , Renault , Unilever , Hermes , Sodexo , Saab, Danone and Dassault Systemes among those reporting.

CNN —The US and Western allies are moving forward with a $50 billion loan package to Ukraine backed by the profits of frozen Russian assets, which includes a US contribution of $20 billion, the White House announced Wednesday. “Ukraine will receive the assistance it needs now, without burdening our taxpayers,” said White House deputy national security advisor for international economics Daleep Singh. The US will disperse at least half of its $20 billion loan by this December, according to Singh. European lawmakers on Tuesday approved a loan of up roughly $37.7 billion (35 billion euros) for Ukraine backed by the frozen Russian assets. Should a peace agreement be reached in the conflict, either the Russian assets will stay frozen and generate interest to repay the loans until they’re repaid, or Russia will pay for the damage it has caused.

CNN —Scientists have scoured the depths of the ocean and outer space for microbes to help slow global warming. “Unusual colors, smells, textures, and other data” can help scientists identify areas of interest, Tierney said. The World Economic Forum named microbial carbon capture as one of the world’s top emerging technologies in a June report, but the technology is still in its infancy, with companies running pilot-scale programs to test commercial viability. Carbon capture — which includes a range of technology from huge vacuum-type facilities able to suck climate pollution from the air to carbon-absorbing sponges — remains controversial as a climate solution. “That’s why these technologies make sense in places where such energy is available in a sustainable manner.”The potential uses of extremophile microbes in biotech extend beyond carbon capture, according to Tierney.

AP —German police busted a pizzeria in the western city of Düsseldorf that also delivered a side order of cocaine when customers asked for item number 40 on the menu. When drug squad officers began observing the restaurant they soon discovered why pizza number 40 was so popular, Moltke told reporters on Monday, German news agency dpa reported. The bounty included 1.6 kilograms (3.5 pounds) of cocaine, 400 grams (14 ounces) of cannabis and €268,000 ($289,000) in cash. Police said the restaurant manager, who was released from detention after a few days, soon reopened his business and started selling pizza number 40 with the cocaine side order again. The pizzeria manager was arrested when he tried to flee abroad, and remains in custody.
