New York CNN —An apparent backtrack by Donald Trump’s ex-lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen threw the New York civil fraud trial into more chaos Wednesday afternoon. But after lunch, Cliff Robert, another Trump attorney, pressed Cohen further on his congressional testimony, and Cohen had a different response, saying that the testimony was not false. “The witness just admitted that we won the trial,” Trump told reporters in the hallway. “And the judge should end this trial immediately.”The New York attorney general’s lawyers asked Cohen in follow up questions to clarify his response. New York Attorney General Letitia James downplayed Cohen’s significance to her case against Trump in comments to reporters at the conclusion of Cohen’s two-day testimony.

A courtroom sketch shows Donald Trump looking on as his former fixer and lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified in the New York attorney general’s civil fraud case against the ex-president. Photo: jane rosenberg/ReutersMichael Cohen , Donald Trump’s scorned ex-confidant, testified against his former boss during an electric day in court, telling a New York judge that Trump commanded him to “reverse engineer” estimates of the former president’s financial wealth. The appearance Tuesday by Cohen, which came in the New York attorney general’s civil-fraud case against the former president and his business, placed the two men face-to-face five years after their bitter split. When Cohen took the stand midday and swore to tell the truth, Trump sat a few feet away at the defense table—cross-armed and stone-faced.

Just four months ago, China’s defense minister, Gen. Li Shangfu, was at a forum for regional officials in Singapore, serving as the face of his country’s bold vision for reshaping Asia’s balance of power. China’s announcement on Tuesday ended some uncertainty about General Li’s professional fate but leaves open questions about whether he is being investigated for any offenses. Officials in the United States had earlier said that Chinese authorities had placed him under investigation for corruption. General Li is the second Chinese minister to be purged this year without explanation and under a cloud of suspicion; the foreign minister, Qin Gang, was dismissed in July. The general’s removal also followed an abrupt shake-up in the leadership of China’s nuclear force, the highest-level upheaval in China’s military in recent years.

Its motive is profit, and in seeking to maximize its financial gains, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the substantial dangers of its social media platforms,” the complaint says. Almost all teens ages 13 to 17 in the U.S. report using a social media platform, with about a third saying they use social media “almost constantly,” according to the Pew Research Center. Beijing CNN —China’s Defense Minister Li Shangfu was fired on Tuesday two months after he disappeared from public view, becoming the second high-profile minister to lose his job recently without any official explanation. Li, who was appointed defense minister in March, has not been seen in public since late August, fueling intense speculation about his fate. Li’s ousting, ironically, has removed a major roadblock for the resumption of high-level military talks between China and the United States. The Financial Times also reported that the US government believes the defense minister has been placed under investigation, citing American officials. Li is believed to be a protege of General Zhang Youxia, Xi’s childhood friend and closest ally in the military.

CNN —Dozens of states sued Instagram-parent Meta on Tuesday, accusing the social media giant of harming young users’ mental health through allegedly addictive features such as infinite news feeds and frequent notifications that demand users’ constant attention. In a federal lawsuit filed in California by 33 attorneys general, the states allege that Meta’s products have harmed minors and contributed to a mental health crisis in the United States. “Social media companies, including Meta, have contributed to a national youth mental health crisis and they must be held accountable. When Cohen takes the stand, he will face down a very angry Donald Trump. With Trump sitting feet away, Trump’s one-time lawyer and fixer described how he manipulated Trump’s financial statements – “reverse-engineering” them to hit an arbitrary net worth. SEATTLE (AP) — Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson's long-running legal case against the thrift store chain Savers Value Village turned out to be no bargain, as the state has been ordered to pay the company nearly $4.3 million in legal fees. King County Superior Court Judge David Whedbee issued the award on Tuesday, eight months after the state Supreme Court unanimously rejected the attorney general's claims that marketing practices by the thrift store chain were deceptive. “Defending and fully prevailing in this lawsuit was burdensome and costly,” Richard Medway, Savers Value Village general counsel, said in an emailed statement. Savers Value Village paid $580 million to charitable partners globally in the five years ending in 2022 and kept 3.2 billion pounds of goods out of landfills, the company said. Two of the major charities it works with in Washington — Northwest Center, which supports people with disabilities, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound — had urged the attorney general’s office to drop the case.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A medical waste processing company has pleaded guilty to dozens of environment-related charges and agreed to pay $1.75 million in fines after state prosecutors in Maryland accused a south Baltimore incineration plant owned by the firm of exposing the public to biohazardous material. It’s supposed to be burned into ash before being transported to landfills, a process that prevents disease transmission, state officials said Tuesday at a news conference announcing the settlement agreement involving the nation’s largest medical waste incinerator. The fine incurred by Curtis Bay Energy is among the highest environmental penalties imposed in Maryland’s history. Witnesses provided photographs from the site showing substantial amounts of unburned medical waste, including surgical gloves, medical supplies and bedding, according to court documents. In addition to evidence of unburned medical waste, investigators found the company had knowingly installed an illegal pump that was discharging wastewater onto an adjacent property.

But the front-running GOP presidential primary candidate was there – and he was pissed. Yet Trump was seething for another reason altogether – or so he claimed: His mounting legal challenges were preventing him from campaigning. “Trump campaigning from a courtroom is so Trumpian,” says Tobe Berkovitz, associate professor of advertising emeritus at Boston University. Separately from the civil trial in New York focusing on fraud, Trump faces 91 criminal charges stemming from four state and federal cases. And like the mug shot, Trump’s presence in the courtroom this week gave his supporters something he can’t give them on the campaign trail – a physical representation of the system he claims is out to get him.

CNN —A New York appeals court judge on Friday rejected Donald Trump’s attempt to stop the ongoing $250 million civil fraud trial, but temporarily halted the process of breaking up his businesses. We’re not seeking anything but a fair trial and these errors permeate the ongoing trial,” Trump attorney Christopher Kise said in court Friday, referring to “an avalanche of errors” in the summary judgment ruling. “And tellingly, they waited until after Mr. Trump decided to stop attending the trial,” the letter says. Trump attorneys and his co-defendants notified the appellate court that they’ve agreed with the New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office to discontinue the suit. CNN —The former controller of the Trump Organization says that Eric Trump directed him to make certain decisions that led to the inflated valuations of several Trump properties. Jeff McConney, also a co-defendant of former President Donald Trump, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., testified Friday as the first week of the civil fraud trial came to an end. (Attorneys for Eric Trump have argued he was not aware that any phone conversations with McConney were used to formulate value assets in the financial statements for Trump properties.) McConney testified that he did not know at the time that Trump had deeded away his right to develop the property beyond its use as a social club in 2005. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A federal judge in Tulsa declined to stop a new law from taking effect that makes it a felony crime for health care workers in Oklahoma to provide gender-affirming medical care to young transgender people. Heil wrote that the plaintiffs had not demonstrated that parents have a fundamental right to choose such medical care for their children. At least 22 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, and most of those states face lawsuits similar to the one in Oklahoma. A federal judge in June declared that Arkansas’ ban was unconstitutional, the first ruling to overturn such a prohibition. Arkansas was the first state to enact a ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors.

Leaving court Monday, Trump incorrectly claimed that the judge had agreed that 80% of the attorney general’s case was thrown out because of the statute of limitations. It’s one of several allegations contained in the attorney general’s civil case against Trump, but it could lead to stiff penalties for his business.
