"The stakes of this race couldn't be higher, and the only Democrat who's ever beaten Donald Trump is Joe Biden," Coons told ABC News on June 30. So far, 27 House Democrats and three Democratic senators have urged Biden to drop out. The new tally means that more than 10% of the Democratic House caucus, which has 213 members, have publicly called for Biden to step aside. "This November, we will harness the power of our community to defeat Donald Trump and his Project 2025 agenda, and reelect President Biden," CHC Bold PAC said in a statement.

As the president isolates at his beach house with COVID-19, his team is under mounting pressure, with top Democrats reportedly pushing for him to drop out. This morning's defectors join 20 other House Democrats and two senators who have called on the president to step aside. In his opinion piece entitled, "It's time for Joe Biden to pass the torch," Casten said that he believes Biden will lose the general election. Many believe that Harris is best-positioned to become the Democratic nominee should Biden step aside. But she warned that things could get more chaotic for Democrats if Biden were to make the extraordinary move to end his campaign just weeks before the Democratic convention. In a twist for the left-leaning Ocasio-Cortez, her comments make her among the more forceful pro-Biden voices in the party right now. Many progressives, including Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., are primarily driven by policy goals and know they have Biden's ear. The strategist said part of the reason progressives like Ocasio-Cortez are backing Biden is the "bird in hand phenomenon" — there's a "comfort level" with Biden in the White House. Ocasio-Cortez also cautioned followers that Biden has unique electoral strengths that other Democrats cannot expect to replicate.

Federal investigators are examining the possibility that a would-be assassin scoped out the area where former President Donald J. Trump was to speak six days before the campaign rally in Pennsylvania where Mr. Trump was wounded. Mr. Crooks opened fire from a warehouse roof at the site on Saturday, grazing the former president’s right ear, killing a rally attendee and seriously injuring two others. US President Joe Biden steps off Air Force One as he arrives at Hagerstown Regional Airport in Hagerstown, Maryland, June 20, 2024, on his way to Camp David. Those delegates are set to vote for their presidential nominee in a virtual roll call in early August, before the Democratic National Convention. If Biden ends his campaign before voting begins, the pledged delegates could cast their ballots for a new candidate. According to the DNC rules, If no candidate won a majority on that first ballot, then the more than 700 "superdelegates" could join in subsequent votes. The voting would then continue until one candidate won a simple majority of delegates.

“The private conversations with the Hill are continuing,” a senior Democratic adviser told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid alienating the campaign and the White House. The Biden campaign, which is also facing a growing outcry from Democratic donors, dismissed the suggestion the president was rethinking his candidacy. “If the facts matter – and they should – here is one: President Biden is the Democratic nominee and he is going to win this November,” Kevin Munoz, a Biden spokesman, told CNN. The most critical, perhaps, is why was the roof of a building within 150 yards of Trump was not secured by the Secret Service or local law enforcement. Democrats’ rebellion against President Biden intensified on Wednesday with the party’s congressional leaders lobbying successfully to delay his nomination by a week, prolonging the debate over the viability of his candidacy. The maneuver came as Representative Adam B. Schiff of California became the highest-profile Democratic lawmaker to call on Mr. Biden to end his run. More details have emerged of heated conversations the president has held with lawmakers in which he has angrily pushed back on their entreaties for him to drop out of the race. Mr. Biden’s disastrous debate performance last month, his uneven public appearances and his struggles in the polls have fueled deep worries within his party. Congressional Democrats have also warned that Mr. Biden’s sagging political standing will make it far harder for them to win critical House and Senate races in November.
