The Writers Guild of America reached a tentative deal with top entertainment companies on a new contract, ending one of Hollywood’s longest labor disputes and moving the industry closer to restarting. The Writers Guild was able to secure concessions on most of their demands from the studios, including increases in royalty payments for streaming content and guarantees that artificial intelligence will not encroach on writers’ credits and compensation. After 146 days on strike, the deal was reached after five consecutive days of negotiations. The use of A.I., one of the main drivers for writers to call a strike, was the last sticking point. Over the weekend, the studios proposed a few paragraphs to be inserted into the new contract that addressed a guild concern about A.I.

The constraint has slowed the adoption of pure electric trucks by cold-chain fleet operators, though automakers including Geely (GEELY.UL) and Toyota (7203.T) offer hybrid models and hydrogen-powered trucks as alternatives. The Australia Letter is a weekly newsletter from our Australia bureau. Invasive species are the biggest drivers of biodiversity loss in Australia, a new United Nations report found this week. And feral cats are the most invasive in the country’s landscape, killing an estimated two billion animals per year, according to Australia’s environment minister, Tanya Plibersek. This isn’t exactly new — the Australian government also declared war on feral cats back in 2015 — but the recent proposal contains some new elements. Should local governments have more opportunity to restrict the ownership of cats in their area?’” Ms. Plibersek told local news media yesterday.

Hundreds of people at Chevron’s liquefied natural gas plants in Western Australia halted work on Friday, an industrial action affecting three facilities that account for about 6 percent of the world’s supply of the essential fuel. At 1 p.m. local time, about 500 employees began short work stoppages and bans on some types of work, after union negotiations over pay and working conditions stalled. The stoppages are scheduled to continue until Thursday. At that point, if the impasse remains, the unions will escalate with rolling strikes of up to 24 hours a day, for up to two weeks, according to the Offshore Alliance, a collaboration of two unions representing energy workers. The labor action — at Chevron’s Gorgon and Wheatstone onshore processing plants and its Wheatstone offshore platform — had originally been scheduled to start on Thursday morning, but it was pushed back as Chevron and the unions attempted conciliation facilitated by a government agency.

China's authorities in recent weeks have rolled out a series of measures, such as easing borrowing rules, to support the debt-riddled property sector, which accounts for one-quarter of China's economic activity, but analysts say the steps are unlikely to reverse the slide. China's property sector has been on a downward spiral since 2021, when the government took steps to stop developers from accumulating debt. Nanjing's move indicates property easing will continue, playing an important role in stimulating home-buying and changing expectations in the sector, Yan said. Many smaller locales have eased home-purchase curbs over the past two years, but major cities - traditional targets of speculative buying - had held off. Nanjing also cut the maximum down payments for first home purchases to 20% from 30% for commercial mortgages, state broadcaster CCTV said on Thursday, compared to 30% to 35% in most major cities.

Tesla (TSLA.O) sold 64,694 cars in China in August, the data showed, while deliveries of its China-made Model Y hit 65,316 last month, topping the CPCA passenger vehicle model sales.
