ASEAN, the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, includes Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. For investors seeking emerging market exposure, Southeast Asia fits the bill, because of the region's strong economic growth and increasing population, analysts say. Some Southeast Asia companies seeking listings in the U.S. look to raise between $300 million and $1 billion, with valuations ranging from $1.5 billion to $8 billion, bankers said, without naming any firms. "International investors are seeing the value of portfolio diversification that Southeast Asia provides," Tay added. The expected pickup in Southeast Asian listings, however, could get derailed by share volatility and stringent investor scrutiny, analysts say.

The UAW union late last week went on strike to pressure the "Big Three" to raise worker wages. The strength of President Biden's economic message could hinge on the outcome of the strike. US consumers are done splurging, Fed report suggests

Washington, DC CNN —After a summer of robust consumer spending, America’s bars, hotels and restaurants say the era of post-pandemic splurging by US consumers has likely drawn to a close. “Consumer spending on tourism was stronger than expected, surging during what most contacts considered the last stage of pent-up demand for leisure travel from the pandemic era,” the report said. Consumer spending rose 0.8% in July, the strongest monthly spending gain since January. But that strength in leisure spending began to level off toward the end of August, the latest Beige Book shows. Still, leisure spending varied by region, with some reporting a noticeable slowing and others saying it is holding steady.

New York CNN —Oil prices could climb well into triple-digit territory by next year if Russia and Saudi Arabia don’t unwind their aggressive supply cuts, Goldman Sachs warned its clients. Goldman Sachs had forecast Brent oil to be $86 in December and $93 at the end of 2024. First, Goldman Sachs expects Saudi oil supply to be 500,000 barrels per day smaller than previously anticipated. Secondly, Goldman Sachs warned that some of its assumptions for oil production may be incorrect if the OPEC+ cut extensions continue. In that scenario, Brent oil prices would likely climb to $107 a barrel in December 2024, the bank said.

The world’s second-largest economy is grappling with growing financial distress, which means big problems for the nation’s nearly $3 trillion shadow banking industry. What’s happening: Shadow lenders, including trust firms, operate outside of the formal banking system. That’s because shadow banks are not just a problem in China. The key concern, said Towes, is whether Western organizations have loaned to shadow banks and are now vulnerable. Production cuts by OPEC+, which produces 40% of the world’s crude oil, have helped send oil prices higher in recent months, a development that could have repercussions for inflation and interest rates.

New York CNN —Goldman Sachs is increasingly confident that the US economy will stick the soft landing that many thought was nearly impossible to pull off. In a research report published Monday night, Goldman Sachs lowered its estimated chance of a US recession over the next 12 months to just 15%. Goldman Sachs pointed to “solid” job growth and rising real (inflation-adjusted) wages that should allow real disposable income to “reaccelerate” next year. The August jobs report, released late last week, showed that hiring remains solid, though it has slowed from the blockbuster pace of earlier in the post-pandemic recovery. “The August jobs report couldn’t be much better,” Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi wrote Friday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Americans are getting a little worried about inflation
  + stars: | 2023-08-29 | by ( Bryan Mena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Washington, DC CNN —Americans felt more pessimistic about the economy in August, following two straight months of growing confidence. That would make it extremely hard for the Fed to bring inflation back down to 2%. Consumer attitudes are sometimes a bellwether for spending, which is mainly what economists focus on since consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of economic output. That’s because the US economy’s strength might not be consistent with 2% inflation, the Fed’s inflation goal. But both the economy and job market also remain on strong footing, and that’s helping to keep inflation elevated.

The market has been a fertile stock picking environment for mutual funds and hedge funds this year, and Goldman Sachs said it found a handful of stocks loved by both cohorts. It then compiled the "Hedge Fund VIP basket," consisting of 50 stocks that most frequently appear among the 10 largest holdings of hedge funds, and the "Mutual Fund Overweight basket," consisting of 50 stocks in which mutual funds are the most overweight. Goldman found that there are six "shared favorites" among hedge funds and mutual funds last quarter, including Cigna , Fiserv , Uber , Workday , Visa and Mastercard . An equal-weighted list of shared favorites has generated an annualized return of 14%, compared to 13% for the S & P 500. That said, both hedge funds and mutual funds benefited from the broader cyclical rally, given their increased exposure to cyclical sectors such as energy stocks, Goldman said.
