Walgreens employees are planning walkouts to protest working conditions, according to news reports. AdvertisementAdvertisementHundreds of pharmacists and other employees at one of the country's largest drug store chains could walk out of the job on Monday to protest what they say are increasingly miserable working conditions, according to multiple news reports. It comes after similar actions last month at CVS stores, where pharmacists likewise complain that staffing cuts have left them overburdened. Neither the company nor the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, which represents thousands of Walgreens employees, immediately responded to requests for comment. However, in a statement to Reuters, Walgreens said it is taking steps to improve working conditions.

The U.S. government in May ended the COVID public health emergency declaration during which it bought the shots and provided them to all Americans for free. In the current privatized system, health insurance plans by law must cover the shots at no cost. McKesson (MCK.N), one of the largest U.S. wholesalers, said it has distributed over 3.8 million shots so far. "Health insurance providers continue to educate Americans about where and how to get their COVID vaccines within their plan’s coverage," David Allen, a spokesperson for insurance lobby group AHIP said. Now that the government is no longer footing the bill for their vaccine supply, pharmacy owners need to pay for the shots.

Industry experts say even a small increase in crime can have massive, cascading effects that cause retailers to close stores. And stolen items can have an outsized impact on store profitability, considering the razor thin profit margins many large retailers typically operate at. “Increasing store crime is another variable in play right now for retailers,” said Zak Stambor, senior retail & ecommerce analyst with Insider Intelligence. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Some people seeking the newest COVID-19 vaccine are running into high demand, insurance headaches and supply delays coast to coast. But some people have had to cancel appointments because their insurance hasn’t updated the billing codes to cover the vaccines. And in some places, there are no available nearby vaccines: A search in Juneau, Alaska, through the federal government’s website shows no available appointments within 100 miles. For others, the shots were covered by insurance without issue, but appointments were canceled by their pharmacy due to supply delays. Walgreens and CVS confirmed that delivery delays to some stores across the country had led to canceled appointments.

Some are being told they need to pay more than $100 out of pocket because their insurance provider isn't covering the shots yet. Most Walgreens stores have enough supply for existing appointments and more slots are being made available as the shots come in, a spokesperson said. Previously, the government purchased the shots and distributed them to pharmacies, doctor's offices and other providers. That leaves pharmacies like his fielding calls and explaining they can't administer shots yet if they wanted to. A notice on Walgreens' website said appointments for children under 12 years old won't start until Friday, Sept. 29.
