In September 1773, Phillis Wheatley, a young enslaved woman from Boston, boarded a ship home from London, where she had gone to promote her forthcoming book of poems — the first ever published by an American of African descent. It was not the first time Wheatley had sailed to Boston. But on this second voyage, Phillis — now a literary celebrity — picked up a pen and wrote “Ocean,” a 70-line ode full of dreaming, wonder and longing for freedom. “Ocean” went unpublished and was seemingly lost until 1998, when the manuscript surfaced at an auction. Now it has been acquired by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, as part of what the museum says will be the largest collection of Wheatley material in public hands.

The spacecraft departed Bennu in May 2021 for a 1.2-billion-mile (1.9-billion-km) cruise back to Earth, including two orbits around the sun. The Bennu sample is estimated at 250 grams (8.8 ounces), far surpassing the 5 grams of material carried back from Ryugu in 2020 or the tiny specimen delivered from asteroid Itokawa in 2010. Three years after its marathon voyage across the Central Arctic Ocean frozen in the ice, the German scientific research ship Polarstern has once again reached the North Pole. This time the expedition is shorter, two months rather than a full year, and the ship is powering through the ice, not encased in it and adrift. But the goal of the scientists on board is the same: a better understanding of how the Central Arctic is changing as the planet warms. MIAMI (AP) — A Florida man who was attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a man-made hamster wheel is facing federal charges after it took the U.S. Coast Guard five days to bring him ashore, according to a criminal complaint filed in Miami. And on Sept. 1, he was brought to the Coast Guard base in Miami Beach. Baluchi attempted a voyage in a similar homemade vessel in 2014, the complaint said. In 2015, he was served a captain of the port order from the Coast Guard that applied to any subsequent voyages. He attempted another voyage in 2021, and the Coast Guard intervened then as well.

Australia's Antarctic research agency rescued a sick expeditioner from a research site this month. The Nuyina, a research and supply vessel, traveled more than 1,800 miles to reach the site. The aircraft took a nearly hour long flight to get to Casey and retrieve the sick expeditioner, according to the Australian Antarctic Program. John Higgins and his eight-man crew scurried onto a lifeboat and caught a final glimpse of their schooner, Trinidad, as it disappeared into the icy waters of Lake Michigan. After 142 years, its wreckage has finally been discovered. Trinidad was built at Grand Island, N.Y., in 1867 and was used as a cargo ship in the lucrative grain trade between Milwaukee, Chicago and Oswego, N.Y., according to a news release. “A lot of these schooners were built for one thing,” Mr. Baillod said in a phone interview on Friday evening.
