Central banks get sucked into financial black hole
  + stars: | 2022-10-14 | by ( Edward Chancellor | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Central bankers around the world want to bring inflation down by returning interest rates to “normal” levels. As a result, the average UK mortgage has grown to 3.4 times average income, up from 1.5 times in the early 1980s, according to housing analyst Neal Hudson. But it’s left many homeowners extremely vulnerable to higher interest rates. As a result, the government’s fiscal position is more exposed to interest rate fluctuations. As a financial black hole opens up, central banks will be forced to stop tightening.

Such products would include ESG and values-aligned investment strategies for JPMorgan financial advisors, along with proxy voting and philanthropic giving. SEOUL, Sept 28 (Reuters) - North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast on Wednesday, South Korea's military said, a day before U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is set to arrive in Seoul. The launch came two days after South Korea and U.S. forces conducted a military drill in waters off the South's east coast involving an aircraft carrier. On Sunday, North Korea fired another ballistic missile towards the sea off its east coast. "North Korea's provocations will further strengthen the South Korean-U.S. deterrence and response capability, and only deepen North Korea's isolation from the international community," the Joint Chiefs said in a statement. Following a stop in Japan, Harris will land in the South Korean capital and visit the heavily fortified Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) between the neighbours on Thursday.
Amazon announced it's holding a new sales event called the "Prime Early Access Sale" in October. Amazon has historically had a big sales event for its prime subscribers in July. Insider previously reported Amazon was planning the second October event. The October timing of the Early Access Sale means Amazon will be throwing the sales event right before it heads into its busy holiday season, known internally as "peak." Amazon did not immediately respond when contacted by Insider about why it had decided to introduce another sales day.
The S & P 500 never really got out of control back then — and, relative to bonds, it didn't either. The Fed chairman, correctly, feared the economy was going to crash, and he would have been right. I think that's certainly how people act. I think that most participants have decided there's no hope and they are using an analogue that's 2000-2001 (dot-com bubble bursting) or even 2007 (before the financial crisis and the Great Recession). Autos have been hurt by supply chain but I think that's coming to an end.
"Moneyball" star Billy Beane said Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger's lessons apply to baseball. Author Michael Lewis profiled Beane in "Moneyball," and Brad Pitt played the baseball executive in the movie adaptation of the book. "It's about finding value in athletes, in baseball players — but those principles apply across areas," the billionaire investor and Baupost Group CEO said. Klarman has been heralded as "the next Warren Buffett," including by the Berkshire chief himself. Feared stock market bottom retest is now underway

The first 60% reading was not at the decisive market low, though a year after each of them stocks were higher. The S & P index, maybe, at just under 16-times forecast profits, with some cross-asset models saying it should be perhaps two multiple points cheaper. Outside of the five largest S & P 500 names (Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Tesla), the rest of the index is closer to a 14 multiple, with the equal-weighted S & P around 13. The three-year S & P 500 total return is still 9% annualized, meaning the bear hasn't yet really cut into muscle for longer-term investors. We'll see how this all plays into the feared market retest now underway.
Our trusted S & P Oscillator is at a minus 7. Goldman cut its year-end S & P 500 target to 3,600 from 4,300. Darden Restaurants (DRI), parent of Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, had its price target lowered $2 to $129 by Deutsche Bank. Morgan Stanley is concerned that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will miss numbers, so it cut its price target to $95 per share from $102. But many tools, like Snowflake, have emerged to make Salesforce data points one of many in analytics. And Salesforce on Tuesday said it is launching a direct integration with Amazon's machine learning tool SageMaker to support custom machine learning models. At its Tableau keynote, Salesforce emphasized the company's Einstein integrations with Snowflake, with the presentation working with Snowflake data. And with these moves, Salesforce is ensuring the analysis and usage of Salesforce data and its results can remain inside Salesforce's sphere of influence. It enables organizations to connect other data lake tools and operate Salesforce data.

Two longtime sports executives are launching an investment firm they say will back startups capitalizing on the growing opportunities at the intersection of sports, media and entertainment. Velocity Capital Management said Tuesday it will invest up to $50 million in early-stage companies with enterprise values of up to $2 billion. "Camp is a business that cuts across some of the things we've been looking at as a firm," said Abrams. Before joining Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment as its chief investment officer in 2018, Abrams served as a partner at Apollo for much of his career. Rees previously guided Sportradar, a data firm that works with sportsbooks, sports federations and media companies, through its IPO in 2021.
Tecton, which specializes in a technology called feature stores, was a more divisive subject among industry insiders. Both Databricks and Snowflake have invested heavily in real-time data pipelines, including in Tecton's latest funding round. But it was hardly alone among machine-learning startups in commanding a high valuation with nominal revenue. Many investors wondered whether Tecton's feature stores were "a feature, not a product," as Steve Jobs famously called Dropbox. That skepticism remains, and some insiders expect a roll-up of overvalued machine-learning startups that attack one piece of the workflow, including Tecton.

On July 5, Andy Jassy officially became Amazon CEO, succeeding Jeff Bezos, who steps into the position of executive chairman. When Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy has a big decision to make, it usually comes at the Chop. "If you go to a Chop meeting with Andy, you better be ready," one former senior-level employee told Insider. Though he's one of the longest-serving executives at Amazon and a close confidant of CEO Jeff Bezos, Jassy still remains relatively little-known outside tech circles. Early on in the pandemic, Jassy told AWS employees that "the world is relying on Amazon," according to an email seen by Insider.

Seven years ago, Larry Lubarsky was a 31-year-old high school dropout who had no money saved and was $100,000 in debt. Lubarsky buys products — like electronics, beauty supplies or toys — in bulk and then re-sells them on Amazon for a profit. "I had no idea that selling on Amazon was even a thing," Lubarsky says of his first brush with the business. Starting his own businessThe windfall from his cut of that Amazon business got Lubarsky back on his feet. He rented his own apartment in Brooklyn and in 2014, used his newly acquired expertise to launch his own Amazon business.
That means astronauts on the International Space Station get to age just a tiny bit slower than people on Earth. And for astronauts on the International Space Station, that means they get to age just a tiny bit slower than people on Earth. That's why time passes slower for objects closer to the center of the Earth where the gravity is stronger. That means time should also slow down for the astronauts relative to people on the surface. You'd think that might even out, but actually their velocity time dilation has a bigger effect than their gravitational time dilation, so astronauts end up aging slower than people on Earth.
