The prosecutor-versus-felon approach may appeal to undecided voters who had been sour on both Mr. Trump and President Biden. Mr. Trump, for his part, has been trying to soften some of his harshest rhetoric about seeking vengeance on his rivals ahead of the general election. In the case of Ms. Harris, the contempt is displayed both in public and private. Since then, Mr. Trump has attacked her savagely, particularly when she became Mr. Biden’s running mate in 2020. On Sunday, Mr. Trump, who has insisted he would debate Mr. Biden anytime and anywhere, appeared to try to change the terms of the second debate.

2 Spot” (news article, July 23):Vice President Kamala Harris, assuming she is the Democratic presidential nominee, has several good options for completing her ticket. But I urge Ms. Harris and her advisers to cast a wider net initially. Nothing in the Constitution would prevent Barack Obama from serving as vice president; indeed, the Republicans considered a similar move with former President Gerald Ford in 1980. Mark Milley, a retired general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is a war hero and a true patriot. Doing so would knock the Trump campaign off balance and, most important, inject a rare note of bipartisanship into our poisoned polity.

Ahead of President Biden’s planned prime-time address from the Oval Office on Wednesday night, former President Donald J. Trump and his campaign sent a letter to ABC, NBC and CBS on Tuesday demanding that Mr. Trump be given equal airtime. Mr. Biden is expected to address his decision to end his re-election campaign and outline his plans for the rest of his time in office. In a social media post, he wrote that he would discuss “what lies ahead, and how I will finish the job for the American people.”But in the letter, which was obtained by The New York Times, the Trump campaign’s general counsel, David Warrington, asserted in advance of Mr. Biden’s speech that it would most likely address Mr. Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. Based on that assumption, Mr. Warrington wrote, “it appears that President Biden’s speech will not be a bona fide news event, but rather, a prime-time campaign commercial.” Citing the Federal Communications Commission’s “equal time” rule, Mr. Warrington insisted that Mr. Trump be given similar time on air, arguing that Mr. Biden’s address was a “campaign speech,” even as Mr. Biden is no longer technically a candidate for the presidency.

All that week, I heard: America First, America First, America First. This was a party that had persuaded itself that one man’s ambition, his insatiable, unquenchable lust for power, was self-sacrifice. He sent the crowd into a frenzy as he ripped that shirt, tearing the flag on it in half, to reveal a Donald Trump campaign shirt beneath. In 2020 and early 2021, Donald Trump tried to overturn an election he lost. Where was Mike Pence, the vice president from Donald Trump’s first term?

Some Democrats have called for a mini-primary, which would allow potential Harris challengers to make their case ahead of an open convention in August. Sen. Opinion | Trump vs. ‘America’s Border Czar’
  + stars: | 2024-07-22 | by ( Frank Bruni | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“Border czar.”If Donald Trump and his campaign staff could tattoo that epithet onto Kamala Harris’s forehead or dress her in a sandwich board bearing only that phrase, they would. So it’s not surprising to encounter it at the start of the first major ad that the Trump campaign has released since Harris became the de facto Democratic nominee. “This is America’s border czar,” says an unseen narrator, in an ominous voice, as the words “Border Czar Kamala Harris” appear onscreen, just to hammer home the designation. And like him, it doesn’t play fair — in tying illegal border crossings to terrorism and in assigning her ultimate responsibility for those crossings. But the ad is smart, and it’s a clear signal of what will be a main theme, possibly the main theme, in Republicans’ attacks against Harris in particular and Democrats in general.

All of it centered on one person: Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden's endorsed heir apparent. The Trump campaign released a statement on Sunday criticizing Biden and Harris as Trump himself focused on mocking Biden. "Kamala Harris is just as much of joke as Biden is," the Trump campaign's statement said. Within hours of Biden dropping out of the race and endorsing his vice president on Sunday, Trump’s campaign managers had released a blistering statement tying Harris to the administration’s policies. Instead, Trump’s team had orchestrated an exacting campaign around defeating Biden. But it was soon widely acknowledged within Trump’s camp that Biden bowing out would also throw their own campaign into uncertainty. Trump’s campaign also began privately ramping up and testing new lines of attack on Harris — someone they had largely ignored since she was sworn in as vice president. While polling has shown Harris is the best known among possible Democratic candidates to replace Biden, Trump’s advisers and allies maintain that most Americans don’t know much about her, creating an opening to define her to the public.

But while some pundits have argued his speech showed he is more subdued and humble in the wake of last week's failed assassination attempt against him, others aren't so sure he's changed at all. And some political scientists and experts on authoritarianism warn Trump could become even more radical after his near-death experience. We are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all," Trump told the RNC crowd as he briefly read messages promoting unity from a teleprompter. Not everyone is certain Trump will change much in the wake of his assassination attempt — for better or for worse. If the assassination attempt does change Trump, the effects may not be immediately apparent — though they are worth being on the lookout for.

The official said that the Secret Service had even tried to deny a request from Trump's team to install metal detectors at his son Barron Trump's high school graduation in May, which the former president attended with his wife, Melania. The official told The Times that the Secret Service had argued that the graduation was not a "political" event before eventually caving in. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi previously said that "there's an untrue assertion that a member of the former president's team requested additional resources and that those were rebuffed." A state judge in Florida has given former President Donald J. Trump a legal victory, refusing to toss a libel lawsuit filed by Mr. Trump over a statement made by the board of the Pulitzer Prizes on coverage of the 2016 Trump campaign’s connections to Russia. The ruling on Saturday by Robert Pegg, a senior judge on a circuit court in Florida, means that Mr. Trump’s case will proceed, opening the door to a discovery phase that may allow Mr. Trump’s lawyers to question Pulitzer officials, who issue the most prestigious prizes in journalism. After the prize was awarded, a special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, investigating the Russian interference allegations, said he could find no evidence that Mr. Trump or his aides had coordinated with the interference effort. Mr. Trump and others who disputed the reporting had urged the Pulitzer Prize Board to revoke the award, but in its 2022 statement, the Pulitzer Prize board said two independent reviews had found nothing to discredit the articles. The reviews found that “no passages or headlines, contentions or assertions in any of the winning submissions were discredited by facts that emerged subsequent to the conferral of the prizes,” the board said in the statement.

Donald J. Trump’s campaign is preparing a major effort to attack Vice President Kamala Harris if President Biden steps aside as the Democratic nominee, including a wave of ads focusing on her record in her current office and in California, according to two people briefed on the matter. The Trump team has already prepared opposition research books on Ms. Harris, and has similar dossiers on other Democrats who could become the nominee if Mr. Biden were to drop out of the race. But the bulk of the preparations so far have been focused on Ms. Harris, including a recently concluded poll testing her vulnerabilities in a general election contest, according to the two people. The Trump team’s attention on Ms. Harris is based on its assumption that if Democrats were to bypass the first Black woman to serve as vice president, it would drive even deeper divisions in the party and risk alienating their base of Black voters.

Trump has long been known for the brash, even vulgar way he sometimes speaks about women. “President Trump championed my journey, empowering me to be who I became today,” Habba said. “The media’s negative portrayal of President Trump and his treatment of women is entirely false,” Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign’s national press secretary, said in a statement. “Every attack on President Trump only strengthens our movement,” said Habba, who represented Trump in the Carroll defamation suit. “Sham indictments and baseless allegations will not deter us, because the only crime President Trump has committed is loving America.”

CNN —The Trump rally shooter searched online for information on the arrest of a Michigan mass shooter and his parents, who were prosecuted in a 2021 high school shooting. A week before the shooting, Thomas Matthew Crooks searched online for the date of the Democratic National Convention and where Trump planned to speak, as well as other searches for Trump and President Joe Biden. Unlike other mass shooters who often leave behind manifestos or writings to explain their attack, Crooks left behind few clues, in his bedroom or online. Investigators have focused on Crooks’ online activity in the months and days before the attack. He searched for the date and location of the Democratic National Convention, which takes place in August in Chicago, and for the location of the Trump rally.

CNN —On a night Republicans projected bravado around their 2024 presidential ticket, Donald Trump started his prime-time address by displaying a rare vulnerability. The former president’s son Eric Trump delivered conservative red meat, much like his brother Donald Trump Jr. had a night earlier. Little mention of Biden (by name)Trump said Thursday night that he would use Biden’s name only once. Thursday night, CNN reported that many senior-ranking White House and campaign officials now privately believe that Biden must abandon his campaign for a second term – and soon. And especially so on its final night, when the politicians mostly gave way to right-leaning celebrities.

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has spent much of the year traveling around the country, tackling the Republican party and its leader, former President Donald Trump. As panic and speculation spread across the Democratic Party following the June 27 debate, the vice president and her aides continued to keep an eye on who might be selected to serve as Trump’s vice president. That ability is likely to be one of several key factors that will shape Harris’ debate preparations. The Trump campaign has declined to commit to a date, as they point to the chaos unfolding in the other political party. “We don’t know who the Democrat nominee for Vice President is going to be, so we can’t lock in a date before their convention.
