French train services were canceled and delayed on Friday, after the nation's high-speed rail network faced a series of "malicious" acts overnight, including arson, just ahead of the opening of the Olympic Games in Paris. Railways operator SNCF said in a statement that its network had experienced several concurrent attacks on Thursday night, with fire damaging its facilities. The high-speed LGV Atlantique line was hit, along with northern and eastern lines, causing knock-on disruption that the operator expected will impact hundreds of thousands of people. "Following this massive attack aiming to paralyze the high-speed line network, a large number of trains were diverted or canceled," SNCF said, according to a CNBC translation, advising those who are able to not to travel to the station. The impact also hit international Eurostar services, which connect the U.K., France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

Just hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, France was rocked by a series of arson attacks on its rail network on Friday, stoking fears over security during the Games. No one was killed or reported injured, but the damage to France’s high-speed train lines caused major delays as thousands of local and international travelers were expected to converge on Paris for the ceremony and the Games. The arson attacks, which authorities have described as “criminal,” come amid heightened security concerns, when France is the center of a global spectacle. Here’s what we know about the attacks and the resulting disruptions:Is this a terrorist attack? That is not clear yet, but France’s prime minister, Gabriel Attal, has described the fires as “acts of sabotage that were carried out in a prepared and coordinated way.” The police and intelligence services are investigating these “criminal acts,” he added in a post on social media.

An unspoken question lingers on people's faces when they hear our family of five took a gap year to travel around South America. We budgeted about $12,000 for flights, estimating six one-way flights at about $2,000 each for our family of five. All told, we expected the trip to cost about $60,000, or less than a year of life at home in Chicagoland. We funded our trip by renting out our home in the Chicago suburbs, which covered our home upkeep and nearly 40% of our travel expenses. On the trip, we didn't know where we'd be in two months or how much money we'd bring in.

A smartwatch with a heart rate monitor can help athletes track their heart rates to keep them in a certain range. Wen: What a lot of active people do is to track heart rate during exercise to keep the heart rate in a certain range. This is where the heart rate is under 70% to 75% of your maximal heart rate. The coordinated rail attacks that disrupted train travel in France on three high-speed lines Friday morning occurred despite intensive security precautions put into effect leading up to the Olympics, which officially begin Friday night. The dragnet yielded some results. In central France, a man of Chechen origin was charged in May with the planning of an attack outside an Olympic soccer match in Saint-Étienne. Another man, a neo-Nazi sympathizer living in the Alsace region, was sentenced to two years in prison for publishing an explosives recipe online and for making threats. This week, a 40-year-old Russian man was charged with working at the behest of a foreign power to “provoke hostilities” in France intending to destabilize the Olympic Games.

The usual rhythm of arrivals and departures at Paris’s train stations was replaced by a tense atmosphere of uncertainty on Friday. Hundreds of stranded passengers crowded the concourses, sorting out their plans after several arson attacks disrupted the rail system in France. “I don’t know when I will be able to escape,” said Ermine Touré at the Gare Montparnasse, a major transportation artery in Paris, three hours after she had hoped to leave Paris for a vacation in Nantes, in western France. “Paris is a mess so I wanted to go today.”At the Gare Montparnasse, travelers hunched over their phones looking for alternate routes out of the French capital. The words “act of malice” and “vandalism” echoed throughout the hall, doing little to quell the anxiety among travelers.

New York CNN —OpenAI on Thursday announced its most direct threat yet to its stalwart Big Tech rivals: a search engine that uses artificial intelligence baked in from the beginning. The company is testing SearchGPT, which will combine its AI technology with real-time information from the web to allow people to search for information in the same way they talk to ChatGPT. While the search engine is currently in an early test for a limited number of users, OpenAI said it plans to integrate the tools into ChatGPT in the future. SearchGPT could also pose a threat to Microsoft’s Bing, the also-ran search engine player that last year incorporated OpenAI’s own technology in an effort to better compete with Google. However, OpenAI said Thursday that it partnered with publishers to build the tool and give them options to “manage how they appear” in SearchGPT’s results.

Japanese cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, are traditionally known for shrines, temples and historic cultural sites. But as the birthplace of anime, manga and, of course, Pokémon, Japan is also a pop culture powerhouse and a hotbed of kid-friendly activities, from practicing ninja skills to spending time with Snorlax. For a family trip, “the beauty of Japan is you can walk five steps and easily attract the attention of a child,” said Ramesh Krishan, who goes by the name RamKy and whose company, Japan Unfiltered, specializes in candid tours of Tokyo, Mount Fuji and other destinations. “It could be a capsule toy-dispensing machine, a karaoke bar with interesting desserts on display, or even the peppy music heard playing inside train stations.”Here are six stops on a family-oriented tour of the country’s most-visited cities.
