CNN —The Greek Islands, known for their idyllic towns, rugged landscapes and sun-baked beaches, are in the grip of a serious crisis. “They combine lack of water resources — shallow aquifers, rare rivers or dams — with a tremendous rise in water demand during summer,” he told CNN. Kottakis blamed the crisis on Leros on a failure to maintain the island’s two desalination units, which are both in disrepair. Tourism is “unsustainable and zero-planned,” which is leading to a tremendous rise in water demand, said Mylopoulos, the university professor. Multiple wildfires raged and at least six tourists, including British TV presenter and doctor Michael Moseley and an American tourist, died as high temperatures scorched the Greek islands.

Venice, Italy CNN —Venice officials have hailed a temporary entrance fee to the city a success, as they experiment with measures aimed at controlling the number of people who come to visit. A 29-day €5 reservation entrance fee and reservation experiment, which began on April 25 and ran on selected days until July 14, brought in €2,425,310 (around $2.64 million), according to Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro. The city initially expected to collect around €700,000 (about $762,163) when the plan was introduced, the mayor had said in April. Gondola rides are one of the unique Venice attractions that have tourists flooding the city year-round. The entrance fee officially ended July 14, but the mayor’s office said they will now determine if they should reinstate it during busy times of the year.

Four unions representing more than 14,000 workers at Disney's theme parks and resort properties in Southern California announced late Friday that members have voted to authorize a strike, citing alleged unfair labor practices during contract negotiations. The thousands of workers at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, the Downtown Disney retail district and Disney-owned hotels authorized a walkout, the unions announced. If a strike does occur, it would be the first at Disneyland in 40 years. The unions said there was "a 99% membership vote in favor of authorizing their Disney Workers Rising bargaining committee to call for an unfair labor practice strike."

Those who do not comply with this rule face being reported, their belongings being removed and fines of €250 euros (around $270). Chairs, hammocks and umbrellas that are left unattended for more than three hours during the day may be removed, the council said. Swiss watch group Swatch said it expects the Chinese market "to remain challenging for the entire luxury goods industry until the end of the year." When Cadie Carroll and two college friends planned a recent weekend reunion in Sedona, Ariz., they booked a vacation rental to have more space than a hotel room and to be able to cook, something they enjoyed doing together at the University of Texas. The only thing missing was a swimming pool. For that, they booked a day at L’Auberge de Sedona where, for $100 each, they gained access to the resort pool, complimentary valet parking, lunch and a sound-healing session, part of a roster of daily activities that passholders have access to. “It felt fancy, like we were getting the five-star treatment,” said Ms. Carroll, 31, a logistics consultant in El Segundo, Calif.Day passes to resorts can be a thrifty traveler’s splurge or a local’s daycation. While the concept isn’t new, it’s grown rapidly in the wake of the pandemic as hotels, still recovering from the tourism collapse, seek to monetize their underused spaces such as pools, spas and even meeting rooms.

Protests in Spain will spread if European officials fail to address mass tourism's negative effect on the lives of residents, UNESCO's Peter Debrine told "Squawk Box Asia" on Monday. He cited the banning of large cruise ships in Venice, Italy, in 2021 as an example. "Cruise ships are no longer going through the Grand Canal." Cruise ships now dock farther from Venice, which helps the structural and environmental integrity of the city. But travelers also play a role in curbing mass tourism, said Debrine.
