However, “I didn't want to make people think that I was an expert,” said Spehar, who filmed the TikTok video from their home in Rochester, New York. Josh Helfgott, a TikTok user with 5.5 million followers, posts a recurring series of videos called “Gay News” discussing current events relevant to LGBTQ viewers. Meanwhile, TikTok is the fastest-growing social media platform for news, according to a report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism published on Tuesday. Twenty percent of 18-to-24-year-olds use TikTok to learn about current events, up 5 percentage points from last year, the report said. The benefit was mutual: Spehar learned how journalism is produced, while the publisher benefited from Spehar's TikTok skills.

Americans are increasingly leaving big cities in states like California for affordable enclaves. Indiana towns are offering cash and other incentives for those willing to leave city life behind. One family shared with The Los Angeles Times the perks they cashed in on in Indiana. Other perks include coffee with the town's mayor Chris Jensen and memberships to a golf club and co-working space. It's too soon to say whether the exoduses away from states like California will stick.

Ruth Handler's children resented the dolls named after them and didn't buy any for their own children. The plastic dolls were actually named after a sister and brother – the children of Mattel cofounder and Barbie creator Ruth Handler. Almost immediately after Barbie hit toy shop shelves in 1959, Mattel started receiving "hundreds of letters from little girls begging us to make a boyfriend for Barbie," Handler wrote. "If people did find out, she'd tell them in no uncertain terms that she was not the Barbie doll." Barbara, meanwhile, said: "I'm tired of being Barbie doll."

New York City is still clawing out of from the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The plan would also mark the culmination of more than a half-century of efforts to implement congestion pricing in New York City. Ultimately, it was the need to improve New York City’s public transit that became the rallying cry for congestion pricing. The stakes of New York City’s program are high, and leaders in other cities are watching the results closely. “It’s good to see New York City’s program is moving forward,” said the Los Angeles Times Editorial Board last month.

It is almost certainly a fact that Richard Montañez did not invent Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. But the Times article wasn’t a death knell for the film — in fact, far from it. “We never set out to tell the history of the Cheeto,” Eva Longoria, who is making her feature directorial debut with “Flamin’ Hot,” told The Los Angeles Times in March, shortly before the film’s premiere at South by Southwest. “We are telling Richard Montañez’s story and we’re telling his truth.”So, the filmmakers forged ahead, and “Flamin’ Hot,” which bills itself as a “true story,” will begin streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on Friday. Here’s a guide to how the spicy Cheeto tale unraveled, what parts of it are actually true (there are some!)

The bill has since been misinterpreted due to language surrounding the phrase “perinatal death” in one of its sections (here). Perinatal death, by one of three definitions by the American Academy of Pediatrics published in May 2016, is the fetal death starting at gestation of 20 weeks and ending at infant death up to 28 days of age (see “Definitions” section on “perinatal death”) (here). BILL AMENDEDThe bill’s language on “perinatal death” was amended twice in assembly before reaching the state senate (see different versions of the bill) (here). BILL DOES NOT DECRIMINALIZE INFANTICIDELaw professors on reproductive health consulted by Reuters said the bill does not decriminalize infanticide and the amendment sought to limit misinterpretation of its language. A California reproductive health bill does not legalize infanticide or killing babies up to 28 days old.

The Los Angeles Times is cutting more than 10 percent of its newsroom jobs, its executive editor, Kevin Merida, said on Wednesday. In an email to staff, Mr. Merida said the company was restructuring and would eliminate 74 roles as a result. A spokeswoman for the news organization, Hillary Manning, said about 500 people would remain. “The restructuring stems from the same persistent economic headwinds facing news media across the country,” Mr. Merida said in the email, which was obtained by The New York Times. “Collectively, we have done a vast amount of work as a company to meet the budget and revenue challenges head-on.

June 4 (Reuters) - California's attorney general is investigating whether the government of the state of Florida played any role in sending more than a dozen migrants to the California capital of Sacramento without advance notice. Representatives of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis did not immediately respond on Sunday to a request for comment. They had initially been taken by bus from Texas to New Mexico and then flown by private jet to Sacramento, California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement issued on Saturday. Initial findings revealed the migrants possessed documentation "purporting to be from the government of the State of Florida," Bonta said. Florida paid $615,000 to an aviation company as part of a "relocation program of unauthorized aliens," Florida state data showed.

In exchange for expanding course offerings and recruiting students, OPMs receive a big chunk of the tuition revenue from the online programs, which usually cost the same as in-person schooling. While it's not always the case, many experts and grads told me that OPMs were offering online students a worse education for a sky-high price. A third-party provider to those schools, 2U signs a contract to offer services such as recruiting and technology to boost online enrollment. OPMs have helped fuel the student debt crisis, saddling may students with tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt and an uncertain future.

Arizona will halt approvals of new developments that don't plan for alternate water sources. The new rule applies to the Phoenix area, whose population just topped 5 million in 2022. The state is also under federal pressure to use less water from the Colorado River. But regulators won't be approving new developments in areas around Phoenix that depend solely on groundwater supplies. Hobbs said a study of the project showed that it will require water sources other than groundwater.

I know you’re going to hate me for leaving out your favorite place, but Los Angeles is huge. There’s no way to cover its vastness in a weekend — or without a car — but it’s possible to capture its romance by avoiding the 405-10 interchange and sticking to one part of town each day. In this guide, we go west to east and loop back to the middle. Locals know the best spots are hiding in plain sight, and an appreciation for beloved classics and an openness to all that’s new define the City of Angels. Well, that and embracing the drives.

Here are some of the generation-defining events that have had a profound effect on Gen Z. As Business Insider previously reported, Gen Z was established as a generation in 2019 by the Pew Research Center, which defines generations — such as Gen Z, Millennials, and Baby Boomers — to understand how perspectives and views change, rather than to create strict categories that define people. Here are some cultural events that have shaped the attitudes and tendencies of members of Gen Z. The recession of 2008 showed Gen Z 'the fragility inherent in the system'Members of Gen Z were children, or babies, during the Great Recession, so it hung over their formative years. Instead of looking ahead to a world of opportunities, Gen Z now peers into an uncertain future," the report continued.

According to the main findings of the NPS observations, mountain lions in Los Angeles County are significantly threatened by the development of roads and cities. A leading cause of mountain lion deaths are vehicle strikes, which often occur when they cross major freeways like the 101, 405, and 118. Sikich told the Los Angeles Times that since March 2022, 15 mountain lions have died, many after being struck by vehicles.

The oil refiner "thoroughly investigated the incident to identify appropriate corrective actions and we are committed to implementing them," the PBF Energy spokesperson added.

US Google was dominated by "Tina Turner" with 5 million searches, followed by a rise in Nvidia shares, a PlayStation showcase, and Krispy Kreme donuts. On Wednesday — the day Musk claimed it was the biggest story in the whole world — Turner was well ahead at top spot.
