REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Aug 31 (Reuters) - "Barbenheimer" - the twin-bill summer box office phenom - sure helped to drive U.S. consumers back to cinemas last month, but movie-going is still struggling to catch up to other recreational spending categories post-pandemic. While that helped long-suffering box office receipts, it made less of a splash for overall consumer spending when compared to larger categories like clothing and household furnishings, economists at Oxford Economics said. It made a big difference in the live-event spending area though, at least for the moment. This summer’s box office has been out of the ordinary with ticket sales for the season up $500 million from last summer’s sales, according to data firm Box Office Mojo. While other categories of live-event spending have fully recovered from the hit delivered by pandemic shutdowns, film attendance outlays remain at roughly 65% of their pre-COVID levels.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, the billion-dollar juggernaut that has dominated the cultural calendar this year, may be on a break before picking up internationally, but its momentum will only rest so long: The show is coming to movie theaters this fall. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film will be released in the United States, Canada and Mexico on Oct. 13, Swift announced on social media Thursday, with U.S. AMC Theaters promising at least four showtimes per day from Thursday to Sunday upon opening. “The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon,” Swift said. “Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged.”Anticipating the white-hot demand that has followed the tour since its announcement, crashing ticketing systems around the world, AMC promised in a news release that it had “bolstered its ticket server capacity to handle traffic at more than 5 times the current record for the most ever tickets sold in an hour.” (The company added, however, that it was “also aware that no ticketing system in history seems to have been able to accommodate the soaring demand from Taylor Swift fans when tickets are first placed on sale.”)

The Canadian dream-pop band Alvvays played first; its last album, “Blue Rev,” was one of my favorites of 2022, and I especially love this fuzzed out, gently melancholic second track. Tanya Tucker: “Delta Dawn”When I traveled to the Gorge in Washington earlier this summer to catch Brandi Carlile’s Echoes Through the Canyon festival — and, you know, a certain very, very special headliner — I was lucky enough to catch an early evening set by the country icon Tanya Tucker. My first favorite part was when Tucker uncorked a bottle of her signature tequila and passed it around the front row. Each Highwoman played a solo cover during the set, and Shires wowed me with a poignant rendition of “Always on My Mind,” which she dedicated to Bobbie Nelson. Luckily, you didn’t just have to be there: The studio recording of the song, on which Nelson played piano shortly before she died last year, is gorgeous, and quite close to the version Shires played live.

Illustration: AgnÈs RicartFrom Taylor Swift’s epic, 20-city concert Eras tour to Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie, ladies in possession of talent and stature (plastic and otherwise) have lately swept the hearts of mostly female mass audiences. The phenomenon extends to the literary world, where two upmarket, explicitly feminist novels, Bonnie Garmus’s “Lessons in Chemistry” and Gabrielle Zevin’s “Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” have become bestsellers and garnered legions of enthused readers.

CNN —It’s like the “Barbie” v. “Oppenheimer” of concert tours. For months now, fans have been packing stadiums for Beyoncé’s “Renaissance World Tour” and Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour, paying up to thousands of dollars for premium seats to see two beloved performers at the top of their game. The tours are cultural behemoths, attracting such celebrities as Paul McCartney, Ariana Grande, Nicole Kidman and yes, “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig while giving a Midas-like boost to the economy of every city they visit. With Swift launching her international dates in Mexico this week and Beyoncé wrapping her tour in Kansas City in October, here’s a by-the-numbers comparison of 2023’s two most monumental entertainment events. History has graced us in this moment with two singular artists, and we fans are the winners.

On Thursday, the yield on the US 30-year Treasury bond hit its highest since 2011 and the 10-year note notched its best return since October 2022. Bond yields go up as bond prices fall. What it means: Higher bond yields could mean bad news for stocks: Bonds compete with stocks for investors’ dollars, and when yields go up, equities often go down. If international bond yields rise, the demand for US bonds may decrease, meaning the US may have to offer even higher yields to attract investors. Still, whatever happens abroad, Turnquist said the key to bringing Treasury yields down will be a slower US economy.

New York CNN Business —Taylor Swift’s era-defining “Eras” tour is flying like a jet stream, high above the music scene — by billions of dollars. The tour could gross $2.2 billion in North American ticket sales alone, according to August survey data from research firm QuestionPro provided to CNN exclusively. ‘An economic phenomenon’“Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras’ tour is rewriting the playbook of entertainment economics,” said Chris Leyden, director of growth marketing at SeatGeek. “She’s not just a performer — she’s an economic phenomenon.”The average resale price of an “Eras” ticket was $1,607, SeatGeek told CNN. CNN —Poetry, prose and now songwriting: Ghent University in Belgium is launching a new literature course dedicated to the literary merit of Taylor Swift’s discography. “Highly prolific and autobiographical in her songwriting, Swift makes frequent allusions to canonical literary texts in her music,” the class syllabus explains. “Using Swift’s work as a springboard, we will explore, among other topics, literary feminism, ecocriticism, fan studies, and tropes such as the anti-hero. In 2016, the University of Texas launched an English Literature course unpacking Beyoncé’s visual album “Lemonade” and its relationship to Black feminism. “But if anyone can teach you a lesson in how to respond to trolls, it’s Taylor Swift,” she concluded.

From Georgia to Michigan to Texas to California and in between, food banks have benefited. “Taylor Swift’s donation certainly helped at a time when we’re seeing the need climb and climb and climb,” Shoemaker told CNN. Food banks around the country are contending with increased demand, higher costs and tighter supplies of donated food. Many food banks say need has increased in 2023, driven in part by the end of a pandemic enhancement to food stamps nationwide earlier this year. A flurry of other contributions followed over the next week, jumping 43% from the same period a year earlier, said Shobana Gubbi, the food bank’s chief philanthropy officer.

This summer, she and Taylor Swift seemed to prove it. Some estimates suggest that Beyoncé’s world tour could gross even more than that by the time it wraps in October. Taylor Swift and Beyoncé fans have been shelling out on everything from secondhand tickets that cost more than a flight to Europe to fancy fingernails to match the singers’ wardrobe. Beyoncé’s shows are expected to spur $4.5 billion in spending, based on a separate QuestionPro survey. CNN —Taylor Swift capped off her sixth and final “Eras Tour” concert at Los Angeles’s SoFi Stadium on Wednesday with a big announcement that Swifties had been speculating about for weeks. She then directed attention to the large video screen where an image of the album art for “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” appeared, confirming an October release date. 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is on its way to you,” Swift wrote on Instagram Wednesday night shortly following her in-concert announcement, adding “the 1989 album changed my life in countless ways.”With each “Taylor’s Version” album, she’s included a number of previously unreleased songs coined “from the vault” tracks alongside the re-recorded originals, tracks that didn’t make the initial album’s final cut. Since it’s an understatement to call Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour the dominant pop concert of the year, it isn’t surprising that snippets of the show, captured by fans on their phones, have been flooding social media sites for months. At least that’s what I thought before seeing the Eras Tour live. Experiencing it in Los Angeles, at the end of its first United States leg, I changed my mind. Consumers have more cash on hand now than before the pandemic, according to a July analysis from the JPMorgan Chase Institute. So, what do corporate earnings reveal about the health of the consumer? “The consumer is in good financial shape, particularly the premium consumer base that we target,” Ed Bastian, chief executive of Delta Air Lines (DAL), said last month. “Both the lower-income consumer and our higher-income consumers are showing really good strength,” said Brian Niccol, chief executive of Chipotle, during the company’s post-earnings call. “The macro effects of higher inflation and a slowing US economy have put increased pressure on the price-sensitive consumer,” said Chip Bergh, chief executive of Levi Strauss.

But Swift has also made each show a news event by adding two “surprise songs,” often with headline-grabbing guests. Music critics have portrayed the Eras Tour as showing Swift at the top of her game as a media-savvy, big-tent talent, a pop star with a knack for grand spectacle as well as the polished artistry of a classic songwriter. Shania Twain, the country-pop star whose career in some ways prefigured Swift’s, caught the Las Vegas stop of the Eras Tour, a 44-plus song production that goes as long as three and a half hours. Ms. Swift’s tour alone is on pace to earn over a billion dollars, while Harry Styles’ Love On Tour ended a couple of weeks ago as the fourth-highest-grossing tour of all time. Elton John wrapped a tour earlier this summer that stands as the highest-grossing of all time — at least for now. While the average ticket price for the Bruce Springsteen tour is an already hefty $250, thanks to so-called dynamic pricing, tickets have been on sale for as much as $5,000.
