Sirens sounded in central and northern Israel Saturday and the Israeli military continued to pummel Lebanon and Gaza, as cease-fire talks held this week yielded little hope of ending hostilities on the ground. The Israeli military bombed targets in Beirut's densely-populated southern suburbs overnight after warning residents to evacuate. It was the first time in several days that the area, a Hezbollah stronghold, had been hit. The Lebanese Health Ministry said 52 people were killed by the Israeli strikes, and 72 injured across the country on Friday. Health workers in Gaza told Reuters that at least 68 people were killed in Israeli strikes in the last 24 hours.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — David Shockley doesn’t understand his son Darius’ political ideology. “It makes no sense,” said David, who is Black and plans to vote for former President Donald Trump for a second time. The latest NBC News Stay Tuned Gen Z poll, powered by SurveyMonkey, found that more than half of Gen Z respondents ages 18 to 29 say they have different political views than at least one of their parents. Both David and Darius — two Black men in a battleground state — are emblematic of a voter base that Democrats and Republicans see as integral to success. “Despite the chasm between the political views, we still come together on our—” said David as he searched for the right word.

Here are five keys to Harris’ bid to make history and become the first woman, the first Black woman and the first Indian American person to become president. Harris cannot afford much slippage with these groups, which are full of low-propensity voters who need encouragement to turn out. Here are five keys to a Trump victoryBut will that curiosity materialize into actual votes for Trump at the ballot box? They could give Harris a crucial boost because these voters tend to reliably turn out in election after election. Unlike younger generations, who until recently may have taken federal abortion protections for granted, older women recall the era of illegal backroom abortions that preceded Roe. A fight for the senior voteNot all older women are motivated by abortion. But in a race that is expected to be decided on the margins, boosting support among women and older voters could make a difference. There are some signs in early voting data that women seniors are highly motivated to vote, said Tom Bonier, a Democratic strategist and CEO of the data firm TargetSmart. Scientists called Campeche an archaeological “blank spot” in the Maya Lowlands, an area spanning what is now Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and southeastern Mexico, and which the Maya inhabited from about 1000 BC to AD 1500. Like other large capital cities from Maya sites, Valeriana had a reservoir, a ball court, temple pyramids and a broad road connecting enclosed plazas. In total, the researchers identified 6,764 structures in Valeriana and in other rural and urban settlements of varying sizes. In the north, Maya sites such as Chichén Itzá are highly visible. Morales-Aguilar’s work on Maya settlements in Guatemala aligns closely with the new findings, he told CNN in an email.

The Lebanese health ministry data and CNN’s analysis of airstrikes show that the Israeli military has dropped bombs within dangerous proximity of hospitals, which are protected under international law. Israel has regularly dropped 1,000-pound and 2,000-pound bombs on Lebanon, according to analysis of aftermath imagery by weapons experts, inflicting catastrophic damage to neighborhoods and towns. The Israeli military has argued that it has deployed these bombs as bunker busters to destroy Hezbollah’s underground infrastructure. The lethal fragmentation radius of these bombs puts nearby people and civilian structures, such as hospitals, at serious risk. That day, an Israeli airstrike hit the premises of Marjayoun governmental hospital in a southern Christian town of the same name.

CNN —Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has promised a “teeth-breaking” response to Israel and the United States after Israel targeted Iranian military sites in retaliatory strikes late last month. He was speaking during a meeting with students on Saturday, ahead of the anniversary of the 1979 seizure of the US embassy in Tehran, Iran’s state-run Press TV reported. Iran and Israel have long been enemies, a rivalry that deepened following Hamas’ attacks of October 7 last year and the subsequent Israeli invasion of Gaza. Khamenei’s remarks on Saturday signal a departure from Iran’s initial attempts to downplay the severity of the strikes carried out by Israel on October 25. He also said Iran is capable of producing nuclear weapons but remains curbed by a mandate by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei against weapons of mass destruction, Press TV reported.

Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded defeat in the general election Friday, in a seismic moment of change for the country that ended the ruling party’s 58 years in power since independence from Britain in the 1960s. Masisi’s concession came before final results were announced, with his Botswana Democratic Party trailing in fourth place in the parliamentary elections in what appeared to be a humbling rejection by voters and a landslide victory for the main opposition party. The opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change held an overwhelming lead in the partial results, making its candidate, Duma Boko, the favorite to become president of a southern African country that is one of the world’s biggest producers of mined diamonds. “I concede the election,” Masisi said in an early-morning press conference two days after the vote. Although I wanted a second term, I will respectfully step aside and participate in a smooth transition process.”

Israel’s air force pounded Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh overnight, destroying dozens of buildings in several neighborhoods, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said Friday. Recently, Israel has intensified its airstrikes on the northeastern city of Baalbek and nearby villages, as well as different parts of southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said an Israeli airstrike on a mountain town overlooking Beirut also killed three people and wounded five. On Oct. 6, an Israeli strike in Qamatiyeh killed six people, including three children, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said. The war began after Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducting 250 others.

A Montana camper whose mutilated body was found in a forest last month was brutally killed by a stranger he welcomed to his campsite and offered a beer, the authorities said this week, a gesture they contend ultimately led to the killer’s arrest. The stranger, Daren Christopher Abbey, 41, of Basin, Mont., who was working in construction in the Big Sky area of southern Montana, was arrested on Saturday after the authorities linked his DNA to that found on a beer can on the floor of a tent belonging to the victim, Dustin Kjersem, 35, according to court records. Mr. Abbey confessed on Tuesday to killing Mr. Kjersem, 35, and was later charged with deliberate homicide, Dan Springer, the sheriff of Gallatin County said at a news conference on Thursday. Mr. Abbey encountered Mr. Kjersem by chance, the authorities said, noting that they still didn’t know the motive for the killing and that the investigation could continue for months.

Hong Kong CNN —China appears to have built a new and unusual aircraft carrier, intriguing experts with a potentially first-of-its-kind vessel that could further increase Beijing’s rapidly expanding maritime power. This potential new aircraft carrier “is of a somewhat unusual shape and size – much smaller than China’s previous naval aircraft carriers,” said Thomas Shugart, a former US Navy submarine commander and now a fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Another view of the satellite imagery captured on October 23, 2024, showing a potentially new class of a Chinese aircraft carrier at a shipyard in the southeastern end of the country. Only the United States Navy operates aircraft carriers bigger than the Fujian. Conducted in the South China Sea, the exercise was “aiming to enhance the integrated combat capability of the aircraft carrier formations” and was “part of the Liaoning aircraft carrier formation’s regular real-combat training in the high seas,” Xinhua said.

Differences in trade policy specifically, he said, are going to "determine where growth and earnings take place around the world." In contrast to Trump's trade policy, reduced trade tensions under Harris could lead to gains for FedEx , which has advanced more than 8% this year. Reuters —Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded defeat on Friday after preliminary results showed his party had lost its parliamentary majority by a landslide in this week’s election, ending nearly six decades in power. Analysts said that mounting socio-economic grievances, particularly among young people, were the downfall of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which has governed the small southern African state since independence from Britain in 1966. “Although I wanted to stay on as your president, I respect the will of the people and I congratulate the president-elect. Neighboring Namibia will hold elections later this month in which the ruling SWAPO party, which has governed since 1990, is also expected to face a stiff challenge. “The outcome of Botswana’s elections should serve as a warning to long-time ruling parties across southern Africa and beyond that without economic progress and employment opportunities, political dominance will falter,” said Zaynab Hoosen, an Africa analyst at Pangea-Risk.
