Paris CNN —The Paris Olympics are not yet one week old but 17-year-old Summer McIntosh already has two gold medals. As for McIntosh, she climbed out of the pool, raised a hand to the crowd, and was met with a roar of approval. A few weeks short of her 18th birthday, she is fast becoming a star of the Paris Olympics. “Pretty surreal, I’m really happy with the time,” McIntosh told reporters after the race. “It’s pretty cool winning the 200 fly because that, by far, was her main event,” added McIntosh.

As a result of the 4-to-3 ruling, labor groups expect Michigan’s hourly minimum wage of $10.33 to increase by at least $2 in February, once the state treasurer calculates inflation adjustments. There will be subsequent cost-of-living increases through 2029. Labor activists and union groups celebrated the Michigan court’s decision. “We have finally prevailed over the corporate interests who tried everything they could to prevent all workers, including restaurant workers, from being paid a full, fair wage with tips on top,” Saru Jayaraman, the president of One Fair Wage, a national nonprofit organizing group, said in a statement.

Meta has agreed to pay $1.4 billion to settle a lawsuit by the state of Texas over the Facebook owner's unauthorized use of biometric data by users, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Tuesday. The suit, filed by Paxton in February 2022, accused Meta of capturing and using the biometric data of millions of Texas residents — which was contained in uploaded photos and videos on Facebook — without legally required permissions. Meta will pay out the $1.4 billion to Texas over five years, the office said. "Any abuse of Texans' sensitive data will be met with the full force of the law," Paxton said. Paxton's office is continuing to press a lawsuit against Alphabet , which accuses the Google owner of illegally collecting biometric data from millions of Texans.

But US consumers aren’t only taking a financial hit from this summer’s extreme heat by way of their electricity bills. Shoppers could soon have to pay much higher prices for fruit and vegetables as farmers shoulder higher growing costs from the heat, a reversal of a trend seen over the past year with the cost of fruits and vegetables dropping by 1%, according to June Consumer Price Index data. For the rest of this summer, consumers aren’t likely to see markedly higher prices for seasonal fruits like blueberries because contracts with distributors and retailers tend to be worked out in advance, he said. Climate change, he said, is causing his business to suffer financially with reduced crop yields. However, the steep costs to make that switch could also contribute to higher prices consumers pay for produce.
