Later, on Twitter, now known as X, Ms. Salazar said she did not have any evidence that there was a pattern of corporal punishment in yeshivas. Ms. Salazar did not respond to a message seeking comment on Thursday. Assemblyman Charles Lavine, a Nassau Democrat who sponsored the legislation, said he wrote the bill because he did not know corporal punishment was allowed in private schools until reading about it in The Times. “I am very pleased that New York is protecting our children by outlawing the use of physical punishment in our schools,” he said on Thursday. In June, New York City completed its own long-stalled investigation into Hasidic boys’ schools.

I felt for the bandage my husband had secured around my chin the night before. Disparate verses from one of my favorite poems, by Wislawa Szymborska, looped through my mind: It could have happened. You are an astronaut, floating and flailing through space, while everyone surrounding you seems to be on terra firma.

NEW YORK (AP) — On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's First Folio, rare originals are being displayed and publishers are offering collectors editions of Shakespeare's plays, including one that sells for $1,500. The British Museum is collaborating with Rizzoli Books in New York on “Shakespeare’s First Folio: 400th Anniversary Facsimile Edition,” contained within a slipcase cover. Besides Doran's introduction, the Folio Society release includes a foreword by Dame Judi Dench. “In an era when everything seems disposable, I feel like there's a good market for fine editions of classic books,” says Folio Society publishing director Tom Walker. “You can buy a Ben Jonson folio for a few thousand dollars; a Shakespeare folio will cost you millions.

Previously, Democratic governors who had backed school choice measures had done so in compromise deals with Republican-controlled legislatures. Vouchers have long been viewed in stark partisan terms: Democrats and public school allies say they drain critical resources from public schools. Republicans and school choice advocates say they give freedom to families who may not like their local public schools. That had motivated public school advocates and Democrats to demand billions more for the poorest public schools, a quest that Shapiro has said he supports. Those fluent in the history of school vouchers could think of no other Democratic governor who had embraced them.

7wireVentures, a prominent venture-capital firm, just raised $217 million to fund the next generation of healthcare startups, bringing the firm's total assets under management to more than $500 million. The fund, which closed last Friday, is the biggest that 7wire has ever raised and represents a strategy shift for the firm. The startups Folx Health and Parsley Health, new investments for 7wire, have also won contributions from the new fund. Livongo7wire keeps funds and the portfolio size, just north of 20 startups, both relatively small, all managed by only four partners: Tullman, Jaffee, Shapiro, and Garber. The small size of the operation is intentional in keeping with 7wire's "quality over quantity" approach to investing, Garber said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans view college campuses as far friendlier to liberals than to conservatives when it comes to free speech, with adults across the political spectrum seeing less tolerance for those on the right, according to a new poll. More recently, a conservative Princeton University professor was drowned out while discussing free speech at Washington College, a small school in Maryland. Overall, Republicans see a clear double standard on college campuses. “The reality is that there’s free speech for everyone on college campuses,” said Fleisher, a linguistics professor at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. But as the nation has become more politically divided, so have college campuses, said Kristen Shahverdian, senior manager for education at PEN.

Josh Shapiro to bypass the Legislature and start automatic voter registration. “THE DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO STEAL PENNSYLVANIA AGAIN BY DOING THE ‘AUTOMATIC VOTER REGISTRATION’ SCAM,” Trump wrote on his social media platform. Democrats contended that Shapiro was well within his legal authority to authorize automatic voter registration. A survey of several states with automatic voter registration revealed similar experiences. Republicans in some states that have switched to automatic registration say it will lead to fraud or illegal voting, and conservatives in Alaska have attempted to repeal that state’s automatic registration.

It was an increasingly familiar position for Newsom, who has emerged as perhaps the Biden re-election campaign's most visible representative. Newsom is near the top of a list that includes Vice President Kamala Harris, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, among others. Senator Dianne Feinstein's death meant Newsom will have the job of naming a replacement to help protect Democrats' slim Senate majority. "It benefits Biden, and it benefits Newsom." NEW YORK (AP) — The departure of Rupert Murdoch as the leader of Fox’s parent company and his News Corp. media holdings after decades at the helm is unlikely to have as much of an impact on conservative media overall as it would have a decade ago. “I think if Rupert Murdoch had stepped down in 2000 it would have had a much greater impact," said Howard Polskin, whose website The Righting.com monitors conservative media. "The conservative media landscape is just much more diverse now.”Fox News' website had nearly 74.8 million viewers in July 2023, while the No. Conservative media personalities such as Tucker Carlson, who was ousted by Fox in April, Daily Wire podcaster Ben Shapiro, and talk show host and podcaster Megyn Kelly, also a former Fox host, are increasingly influential as well. Pennsylvania, a battleground state that could play an outsize role in the 2024 presidential election, will begin to automatically register new voters as part of its driver’s license and state ID approval process, officials said on Tuesday. Voters must meet certain eligibility requirements, which include being a U.S. citizen and a Pennsylvania resident for at least 30 days before an election. They also must be at least 18 years old on the date of the next election. “Automatic voter registration is a common-sense step to ensure election security and save Pennsylvanians time and tax dollars,” Mr. Shapiro said in a statement. — all the information required to register to vote — so it makes good sense to streamline that process with voter registration.”

If voters in the heavily-Democratic district cast their ballots for former congressional staffer Lindsay Powell, Democrats will keep the slight majority they previously had. The party has defended its majority in a series of special elections since November. With either outcome, Pennsylvania's government will remain divided with Democrat Josh Shapiro in the governor's office and Republicans holding a Senate majority. With control over the calendar, Democrats have advanced a number of their priorities on a one-vote margin. If Republicans gain control of the House, they can take some of these questions to voters through proposed constitutional amendments without Shapiro's approval.

Of the more than 110,000 asylum seekers who have recently landed in New York City, 20,000 are children now enrolled in public schools, facing challenges both familiar to any kid who has moved away and towering in their emotional complexity. More than 8,600 children in the city lost a parent to Covid. In response to these and other troubling statistics, the Adams administration released a mental health plan last March with a focus on children and teenagers and the goal of expanding clinical services in schools. The migrant crisis has been imagined largely in terms of the housing emergencies that have flowed from it. “We are seeing the highest level of mental health need we have ever seen, in our city, in our clinic, in our country,” Alan Shapiro told me recently.

Is there an election coming up by any chance?”While some individual schools and colleges have implemented temporary mask requirements, there is no sign that anyone in federal or state leadership is considering widespread COVID-19 restrictions, requirements or mask mandates. “No COVID-19 public health restrictions or mask requirements are being considered by the Murphy administration," said Christi Peace, spokesperson for New Jersey Gov. It was largely the same message from Democratic governors’ offices in several other states that responded to an inquiry about whether any COVID-19 mandates were under consideration. “Currently, COVID-19 lockdowns and mask mandates are not being discussed and the governor has no plans to institute these measures,” she said. Reinstated mask requirements across the country have so far been limited to a handful of local schools and businesses.
