CNN —The destruction of the world’s rainforests ramped up last year, despite global pledges to end deforestation by 2030, according to a new report. The country’s rate of forest loss rose 15% from 2021 to 2022. Bolivia saw a record-high level of primary forest loss last year, with a 32% increase compared to 2021. It came in third behind only Brazil and the Democratic Republic of the Congo for area of primary forest loss, the report found. Despite the global increase in deforestation, there has been a sharp reduction in forest loss in Indonesia and loss levels in Malaysia have remained low, according to the report.

LONDON, June 23 (Reuters) - Global trade remained in the doldrums during the second quarter as China’s post-lockdown rebound proved slower than expected and was offset by continued weakness in North America and Europe. Chartbook: Global container tradeChina’s freight movements have rebounded as the country emerged from lockdowns and the exit wave of the epidemic, though not as fast as anticipated at the start of the year. At Japan’s Narita airport, international air cargo was down 25% in the first five months of 2023 compared with a year ago. The most optimistic interpretation is that freight volumes have stabilised, after declining sharply in the second half of 2022, but there is no sign yet of a recovery outside China. I’ve been blessed to travel the world chasing flavors, wandering through markets, dining at fancy restaurants and eating at mom-and-pop food trucks. It makes me think of a woman who inspires me like no other: the great Creole chef Leah Chase. “In my dining room, we changed the course of America over a bowl of gumbo and some fried chicken,” she once said. I turned to her legacy for inspiration, motivated by how her restaurant helped shape the civil rights movement and sustained the community. To me, this is the spirit of true American food, which is more democratic than ever.

The "slow and go" pace of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union workforce at West Coast ports has slowed ground port productivity to a crawl. "Our data shows that vessels will continue arriving at West Coast ports in the coming days with significant amounts of cargo to unload," said Kyle Henderson, CEO of Vizion. Truck and container backupsThe average truck turns to go in and out of the West Coast ports are up. West Coast ports, which had lost significant volume to East Coast ports over the past year due to volatility in the labor contract talks, had in recent months begun to gain back volume. Recent Panama Canal low water levels limited cargo throughput, and soon after that, large parts of U.S. West Coast ports stopped handling inbound and outbound container trade.

Livista plans German lithium refinery for EV batteries
  + stars: | 2023-06-07 | by ( Nick Carey | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, June 8 (Reuters) - Livista Energy said on Thursday it plans a lithium refinery for electric vehicles (EV) batteries in Germany that should launch production in 2026 and has partnered with French oil and gas services provider Technip Energies (TE.PA) to design the plant. Luxembourg-based Livista said it initially aims to refine 40,000 tonnes of lithium annually at the plant, or enough for batteries for around 850,000 EVs, with the potential to double capacity over time. The European lithium refiner said that recycled lithium from batteries should make up 50% of the plant's capacity by 2030. The EU's plans for battery independence also include recycling battery materials like lithium. As lithium mines and refineries take years to develop, building out European supply will be a lengthy process.

CNN —LeBron James continues paving the way for his post-basketball media career, this time by producing a superstar origin story adapted from his book, “Shooting Stars,” about how his hoops heroism came with an assist from a close-knit group of friends. Directed by Chris Robinson, the story is adapted from the book by James and “Friday Night Lights” author Buzz Bissinger, and previously served as the basis for the documentary “More Than a Game.”Sian Cotton, Romeo Travis, Dru Joyce III, Willie McGee, Coach Dru Joyce II and LeBron James, the real-life inspiration for "Shooting Stars." Where “Shooting Stars” merely glances the rim, ultimately, is the basketball sequences themselves, which rely too much on slow motion and don’t conjure much excitement. Heading directly to streaming via Peacock, “Shooting Stars” provides an earnest reminder that James didn’t spring from the ground a fully formed basketball phenom, but was rather shaped in part by the coaches, teammates, friends and mother that helped guide him. “Shooting Stars” premieres June 2 on Peacock.

But officials contended that the arrests reflected something far more sinister: “These criminals facilitated and encouraged domestic terrorism,” said Georgia’s governor, Brian Kemp. The three people arrested — Marlon Kautz, 39; Savannah Patterson, 30; and Adele MacLean, 42 — made an initial court appearance on Friday. Bail for each of them was set at $15,000. But Judge James Altman expressed some skepticism about the state’s case. “I don’t find it real impressive,” he told prosecutors during the hearing, adding that “there’s not a lot of meat on the bones of thousands of dollars going to illegal activities.”

The 22-year-old certainly doesn't need to live with his folks: He became a millionaire last year after his company, Fanfix, sold for $65 million, according to Crunchbase. It's a model broadly similar to OnlyFans, but with a major difference: it doesn't allow nudity. When SuperOrdinary bought Fanfix, Insider's Geoff Weiss reported that there were plans for product collaborations with the platform's creators. And they took advantage of the creators, and so a massive gap opened up for platforms like Patreon, platforms like us."

Partlow said she's never been caught or faced any backlash for skiplagging, but as a frequent flyer, she's aware that airlines are trying to clamp down on it. Seventy percent of Million Dollar Baby's demand is on the U.S. East Coast, executives said. During the first three months of 2023, West Coast ports handled 40% of U.S. container import volume. Extrapolating that first-quarter data over 12 months would show that more than 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) moved away from the West Coast ports annually, starting in 2021, said Chris Jones, an executive vice president at Descartes Systems Group. Colgate-Palmolive (CL.N) routed 25% of containers away from West Coast ports and has already begun reversing some of that, said Francisco Rodriguez, Colgate toothpaste maker's director of global logistics. Importing to Mexico opens a legal loophole that enables Million Dollar Baby to sell those products to U.S. customers without a 25% tariff.

This year, advertisers and ad agencies may well use the strike as a bargaining tool, said Erin Firneno, vice president of business intelligence for researcher Advertiser Perceptions. The writers’ strike, which has entered its third week, is also injecting a new element of uncertainty for ad buyers, at a time when television viewership is declining and the possibility of recession looms. While the TV networks have long contended with splintered viewership amid the rise of social media and streaming, the writers' strike puts content production at risk, said Rishad Tobaccowala, a former executive at advertising and public relations giant Publicis Groupe and advisor on business transformation. Last year, NBC’s upfront presentation emphasized star power as the network returned to a live event after a COVID-19-imposed hiatus. Ahead of the upfront presentations, media executives sought to reassure investors about the strike’s impact.
The job market for remote workers might be shrinking in some cities, but it's flourishing in others. The researchers behind the paper — called "Remote Work across Jobs, Companies and Space"— looked at more than 250 million job vacancies offering remote or hybrid work posted between January 2014 and January 2023. London, Sydney and Toronto — the most populous cities in the U.K., Australia and Canada, respectively — have seen some of the biggest increases in remote work, the report found. In 2022, for example, "one in four new job postings in Washington, D.C. advertised remote work arrangements, compared to one in fourteen in Perth, Australia," the report notes. The number of available remote jobs also fluctuates across regions: In the U.S., for example, remote jobs have become less common in southern cities like Savannah and Miami Beach, compared to northeast and western cities like San Francisco, Boston and Colorado.
A jury found Trump sexually abused Carroll and defamed her when denying it, awarding her $5 million. After the verdict was read, Carroll told Trump's attorney, Joe Tacopina: "He did it." "I am overwhelmed, overwhelmed with joy and happiness and delight for the women in this country," Carroll told Savannah Guthrie on the "Today" show Wednesday morning. "She didn't say that to me," Tacopina told Insider on Wednesday. "This is not about the money," Carroll told Guthrie.
E. Jean Carroll's lawyer promised Donald Trump will pay up the $5 million in damages he owes. A jury on Tuesday found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in 1996. Trump's lawyer in the case, Joe Tacopina, maintained that they plan to appeal the case and won't have to pay Carroll anything quite yet. A Manhattan jury on Tuesday found the former president liable of sexually abusing Carroll in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in 1996. The jury awarded Carroll $5 million total in damages.
E. Jean Carroll's lawyer said Donald Trump was "a witness against himself." A Manhattan jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in 1996. "There's no question that both of those things helped our case," Kaplan said. In his deposition, Trump's comment came after he said anyone who is a "star" can largely get away with grabbing women. On Tuesday, a Manhattan jury unanimously found Trump liable of sexually abusing Carroll in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in 1996.

Washington CNN —Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee have asked Harlan Crow, the GOP megadonor and friend of Clarence Thomas whose gifts to the Supreme Court justice have prompted fresh criticism about the ethical standards of the nation’s highest court, for more information about the expenditures. The letters also state that the recent revelations come amid a lack of American confidence in the Supreme Court, pointing to recent polling. Thomas had not financially disclosed the hospitality from or the deal with the Texas billionaire. Democrats have vowed to keep investigating the ethics of the nation’s highest court, and Chief Justice John Roberts declined an invitation to testify at a hearing on Supreme Court ethics. Speaking to CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin said “everything is on the table” as the panel scrutinizes new ethics concerns around Thomas.
In the down-to-the-minute choreography of Saturday’s coronation, William and Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales, had been expected to arrive outside Westminster Abbey at roughly 10:45 a.m. They would be among the last guests to enter the church before the stars of the show, King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Instead, Charles and Camilla pulled up to the abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach and then, rather awkwardly, did not alight. Were William and Kate running late? None of the hundreds of journalists loitering by the broadcast booths outside Buckingham Palace seemed to know for sure.
