Google confirmed on Thursday that the company ended its agreement with the development partner that was working on four key campus sites. Alphabet-owned Google is embarking on its most expansive cost cuts in its almost two decades on the public market. CNBC reported that, as part of Google's downsizing that went into effect early this year, the company gutted its development team for the San Jose campus. As recently as September, Google executives, including CFO Ruth Porat, appeared at a San Jose event that aimed to reaffirm the company's commitment to building in the city. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said in a statement to CNBC that the latest news "doesn't change Google's commitment to San Jose or their timeline."

Despite the city’s spending billions on homelessness, the number of “unhoused”—as progressives say—has continued to soar alongside crime and opioid deaths. The tent encampments littering its streets have made the city a laughingstock. Los Angeles, San Jose, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Ore., and others also have tent cities. How can this be in the world’s wealthiest country?

If you work in San Francisco, super commuting is the difference between living in a suburb or next to a vineyard. Still, he notes, not all big cities will fare equally well in the age of super commuting. In its pre-pandemic analysis, the Census Bureau found that, on average, super commuters earned higher salaries than other commuters. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe housing market in San Jose, California, is so hot that even a former meth lab is asking well over $1 million. A six-bedroom home is currently listed at $1.55 million, but the kicker is it's being sold as is — "inactive meth lab" and all, reads the listing description. According to Redfin, San Jose has the most competitive housing market in the country, beating out neighboring cities like Sacramento and San Diego.

"The Bay Area has consistently been one of the most expensive markets in the country," said Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin. Why the New York metro area is low on the listMidtown Manhattan, New York, as seen from Hoboken, New Jersey. That's because the metro area goes beyond Manhattan and the city's four other boroughs, extending into nearby counties. "Even though Manhattan is really expensive, once you get to the outlying areas [in] the New York metro area, it actually becomes quite affordable," said Fairweather. Interested homebuyers in the region still need to earn six figures annually to afford a home, about $197,734, Redfin estimates.

What’s going to stop that?” said Jon Loffi, a longtime law enforcement officer who teaches aviation security at Oklahoma State University and wrote a paper on identifying insider threats. The Federal Aviation Administration says its approved medical examiners are trained to gauge a pilot's mental health. The Horizon close call could result in the re-examination of the practice of letting off-duty pilots or other airline employees sit in the cockpit jump seat. Security experts say it would be difficult if not impossible to stop every determined criminal or terrorist who targets aviation. The off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot who was arrested Sunday joined Horizon as a first officer or co-pilot in 2001.

Costa Rica, Honduras Agree to End Visa Rules and Ease Trade

Earlier this month, Costa Rica introduced mandatory visa requirements for Hondurans seeking to enter, saying the measure was needed to boost security, which prompted reciprocal action from Tegucigalpa. Earlier this year, Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves proposed a set of security measures in response to surging crime, including a record-setting pace for murders. Costa Rican police have attributed rising violence to an uptick in international criminal groups trafficking drugs to the United States. Specifically, Costa Ricans seeking to enter Honduras will need a certificate showing their criminal records, while Hondurans seeking to enter Costa Rica will need a certificate detailing any police record. But multiple memory chips are needed to support each GPU or CPU, so making memory requires more fab space. Micron says construction in New York will begin at the end of 2024 and chip production there will start in 2027. By 1980, it was building its first fab and a year later was pumping out a revolutionarily small 64K DRAM chip. Gatzemeier, who joined as an intern in 1997, explained the two main kinds of memory: DRAM and NAND. When it comes to the biggest type of memory, DRAM, Samsung is by far the leader, followed by SK Hynix and then Micron.

Mark Schena, 60, was convicted last year of paying bribes to doctors and defrauding the government after his company billed Medicare $77 million for fraudulent COVID-19 and allergy tests, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement. A sign for 5G is seen at the World 5G Exhibition in Beijing, China November 22, 2019. The Chinese embassy in San Jose criticized the remarks in a statement. "These comments gravely affect the confidence and expectations of Chinese companies to undertake economic-trade activities in Costa Rica and they erode the good energy to develop bilateral relations," the embassy wrote in a statement. In August, Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves approved a decree aiming to regulate 5G mobile network development and banned firms from countries that have not agreed to an international cybercrime convention. Chaves issued the directive shortly after Laura Richardson, a senior U.S. military commander, visited Costa Rica, where she questioned growing Chinese investment in Latin American infrastructure development including ports and 5G networks.
