CD rates have been going down throughout 2024, but some local institutions still offer good rates. California Coast Credit Union offers a startling 9.50% APY on its 95th anniversary Celebration CD. In comparison, even the best CDs available nationwide mostly offer CD rates in the high 4% to 5% APY range. If you're interested in opening a CD with this credit union, you'll want to act fast since CD rates are likely to decline further in 2025. Most of these are short-term CDs since short-term CD rates are currently outperforming long-term CD rates.

India's headline inflation softened from 14-month highs, coming in at 5.48% in November. The print was down from the 6.21% in October and was below the 5.53% expected by economists polled by Reuters. India's economy expanded by just 5.4% in its second fiscal quarter ending September, well below estimates by economists and close to a two-year low. While the Reserve Bank of India does not produce monthly inflation estimates, the RBI projected the headline print will hit 5.7% during the country's third fiscal quarter ending in December. The RBI has previously cautioned that adverse weather events and the rise in international agricultural commodity prices pose upside risks to food inflation.

Sometimes, bosses have to make difficult decisions, which is why Louie Bernstein once fired his best salesperson. A few years later, he hired someone who quickly became his top salesperson, Bernstein told LinkedIn's "Catalyst" video series last week. She had a good personality — so I thought — and I ended up making her an offer ... She just started making sales right away," said Bernstein, now a 72-year-old sales executive and leadership consultant. Once he started working with her, he discovered that she lacked a key soft skill, and without it, she was a nightmare to work with, he said: coachability. "In the end, I felt like we had cancer and I was the surgeon that needed to cut it out to save the company," Bernstein wrote in a 2022 LinkedIn post.

Hyams, who works in social media and marketing, illustrates one of the traits of Gen Z that may be surprising. Kevin McCrain, CEO of Brookfield Properties' retail business, said Gen Z craves unique experiences that they can share in person and through social media. One of the most surprising findings of her Gen Z research was a simple one: Despite growing up in a world where everything from schoolwork to dating takes place on the internet, almost every Gen Z person she surveyed or interviewed said they preferred to communicate in person. That compares with only 30% at the company's Hollister brand, which tends to attract Gen Z shoppers. Compared with older generations, Gen Z shoppers also have high expectations of how brands connect their online and offline businesses.

As U.K. and EU leaders seek to reset relations ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House, public sentiment also appears to be shifting in favor of closer ties across the continent, according to a new survey. The majority of Britons (55%) think the U.K. should realign with the EU under a second Trump term, and prioritize stronger relations with Brussels over the U.S. (17%), research from the European Council on Foreign Relations showed Thursday. There was also reluctance for Britain to follow Trump's lead on major foreign policy issues such as China and Ukraine. On the continent, the feeling is mutual, with pluralities of respondents across EU countries — and Germany and Poland in particular — supporting closer ties with the U.K. "There is a striking and widely-held desire on both sides of the channel to get closer together," he added.

Biden administration officials said Wednesday they have no current plans to authorize a stockpiled bird flu vaccine, despite an escalating outbreak among livestock in the U.S. and at least 58 human infections across seven states. Almost all bird flu cases in the U.S. have been in farmworkers who have had contact with infected animals — either dairy cows or poultry — aside from a patient in Missouri and a child in California. The federal government has two bird flu vaccine candidates available in limited quantities in the nation’s Strategic National Stockpile, though they need to be authorized by the Food and Drug Administration before they can be used. Still, some public health experts believe the time for vaccination is now, particularly for farmworkers. In 1976, at the first signs of an H1N1 swine flu outbreak in the U.S., public health officials quickly initiated a nationwide vaccine campaign.

North Carolina Republican lawmakers voted to override a gubernatorial veto of a bill that strips the state's incoming Democratic officials of key powers. The GOP-led state House of Representatives on Wednesday voted along party lines to override outgoing Democratic Gov. The Republican-controlled state Senate voted to override Cooper's veto last week, meaning the bill will now go into effect, though legal challenges are expected. Three state House Republicans from western North Carolina who voted against the bill originally supported the veto override on Wednesday, giving the party the three-fifths support in the chamber necessary to overrule Cooper. "The bill, to be clear, is a power grab, not disaster relief," Stein said at a Democratic Governors Association meeting last weekend in California.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday the league’s partnership with Roc Nation, the entertainment company founded by rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z, is “not changing” amid the civil lawsuit filed against Jay-Z accusing him of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. “We are aware of the civil allegations and Jay Z’s really strong response to that," Goodell said at a press conference following a league meeting in Irving, Texas. Tasked with coordinating Trump’s core campaign promise of a mass deportation, Homan has used the appearances to begin detailing how the efforts might take shape and how the administration will move its plan forward. The New York Police Department is now looking into whether a denied insurance claim related to that injury played a role in the shooting, Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told Fox News on Tuesday. Refusals to pay for care are more common for people with employer-based health insurance or private insurance compared to people with public insurance, such as Medicare and Medicaid. Another KFF report published last year found nearly 17% of in-network claims were denied in 2021 among people with Obamacare coverage.
