WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday handed a loss to Republicans by allowing Pennsylvania voters who sent mail-in ballots that were flagged as being potentially defective to submit a separate provisional in-person ballot. The justices rejected, with no noted dissents, a Republican request to put on hold a Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling from last week. The Supreme Court action does not definitively resolve the legal issue, which could yet return to the justices. Many of Pennsylvania's counties, which administer elections, already allowed for voters to cast provisional ballots if their mail-in ballots lacked a secrecy envelope even before the recent state Supreme Court ruling. A suspect in the killing of a man whose death in Montana was initially thought to have been caused by a bear is in custody, the Gallatin County sheriff said Wednesday. The suspect in the death of Dustin Kjersem, whose body was found in a remote area on Oct. 12, was not immediately released. The attack was described as "vicious," and Kjersem died after sustaining “multiple chop wounds,” according to his autopsy, Gallatin County sheriff's Capt. Auto giant Stellantis on Thursday reported a 27% decline in third-quarter net revenues, but said it was making headway in addressing operational issues such as U.S. inventories. A 56-year-old woman was killed by a falling tree while traveling by car in central Nantou county, according to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC). Strong winds from Kong-rey tore down a roof in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan on October 31, 2024. Kong-rey rapidly intensified to reach super typhoon strength on Wednesday as it barreled toward Taiwan after bashing the Philippines. Kong-rey is the third typhoon to make landfall on Taiwan this year after Krathon and Gaemi. After moving into the northern Taiwan Strait, the storm is forecast to head into the East China Sea and toward Japan.
