The Federal Reserve definitely won't cut interest rates this year, a top Goldman Sachs strategist said. "I would call it a soft landing as opposed to no landing," he added. But it will pull off a "soft landing" and bring inflation down without the US economy slipping into a recession, Lotfi Karoui told CNBC on Thursday. Demand for stocks typically falls as interest rates rise, as higher borrowing costs weigh on corporate finances and tend to have a negative impact on their future valuations. Goldman Sachs said Friday that it anticipates the Fed to hike interest rates three more times this year, after data released last week suggested persistent inflation pressures and continued resilience in the labor market.
Morning Bid: What landing?

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Wayne Cole. Forget soft landing, equities seem to be betting on no landing for the U.S. economy: a sublime state where steady growth and low unemployment can co-exist with slowing inflation and higher interest rates. That at least would explain the resilience of stocks to blockbuster U.S. retail data and the rise of 10-year Treasury yields to seven-week highs. After an initial dip, Wall Street rallied into the close and futures have since nudged higher, lifting Asian markets in the process. That's a marked divergence from the Blue Chip consensus which has been tipping a sharp contraction for the quarter.
The flurry of unidentified objects that have been shot down over North America this month could bring yet another boost to aerospace and defense stocks, but investors looking to use ETFs should be aware of some key differences between the largest funds. While defense stocks have outperformed the broader market over the past year, in part due to the war in Ukraine, the latest shoot downs don't appear to have significantly moved the sector. The biggest fund on the market is the iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF (ITA) , with about $5 billion in assets under management. Another market-cap weighted fund is the Invesco Aerospace & Defense ETF (PPA) . The third fund on the market is the SPDR S & P Aerospace & Defense ETF (XAR) .
Feb 10 (Reuters) - Shares of Lyft (LYFT.O) fell more than 30% before the bell on Friday after forecasting first-quarter profit below estimates, amplifying worries that it was falling behind Uber (UBER.N) as the ride-hailing firms look to rebound from pandemic lows. Both the companies have been locked in a battle for market share coming off the pandemic, when they had to tackle challenges such as driver shortages and rising costs. Bigger rival Uber on Wednesday forecast first-quarter operating profit well above analysts' estimates. Analysts believe Uber, which has a market capitalization nearly 12 times that of Lyft, possesses a significant advantage given its scale. "These results reinforce our thesis that Lyft is at a structural competitive disadvantage versus Uber in terms of market share, driver supply and expenses," RBC Capital Markets analysts said on Friday.
The news comes as the crypto conglomerate's lending unit, Genesis, filed for bankruptcy protection last month. The company told Insider that offloading assets "is simply part of our ongoing portfolio rebalancing." Grayscale operates a bitcoin trust and an ethereum trust charging shareholders 2% and 2.5% in fees a year, respectively. Shareholders have cumulatively paid roughly $1.2 billion for its bitcoin trust and $387 million for its ether trust since 2017, per Morningstar Research. The firm is reportedly selling shares around $8, despite each share's claim to $16 worth of ethereum.
Bond yields and prices move inversely to each other so, as rates rose, prices tumbled – and did so at an inopportune time since stocks were suffering, too. Thus, they have higher interest rate risk and greater price fluctuation. He likes short-term Treasury bond funds and ETFs. Another way to mitigate interest rate risk is to use a barbell: You hold equal amounts of shorter and longer-dated issues. "You don't have to reach too far in terms of credit risk and interest rate risk to capture healthy yield in today's environment."

That has raised expectations that hefty household stimulus measures could be announced at a parliament meeting in March. Prominent academics have felt emboldened to speak publicly about sizeable demand-side measures such as 1 trillion yuan ($148.28 billion) or more in consumption vouchers. Some analysts say pent-up demand during the pandemic may be enough for consumption to grow with little policy support. Household savings jumped 7.9 trillion yuan last year to 17.8 trillion yuan. Several Chinese cities have already offered about 5 billion yuan in consumption vouchers and subsidies in total since December.
What to look for in Friday’s jobs report

Minneapolis CNN —A week that has been chock-full of economic data will be capped off Friday with the first US jobs report of 2023. Beyond the key headline indicators of payroll gains, unemployment and average hourly earnings, here are some other areas of the jobs report that Pollak and other economists will scrutinize when the January jobs report is released Friday morning. Average weekly hoursIn December, the average working week for employees — including part-time workers — was 34.3 hours, according to BLS data. Labor force participationThe imbalance of labor demand and worker supply has been consistently highlighted by the Fed as a potential sticking point in its efforts to lower inflation. The world has changed pretty dramatically over the last two to three years, and it’s going to be difficult to show people that the skills they possess are needed right now.”The government’s monthly jobs report is scheduled to be released at 8:30 a.m.
A screen displays the Fed rate announcement as a trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), November 2, 2022. Brendan McDermid | ReutersThe U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of England are all expected to hike interest rates once again this week, as they make their first policy announcements of 2023. Economists will be watching policymakers' rhetoric closely for clues on the path of future rate hikes this year, as the three major central banks try to engineer a soft landing for their respective economies without allowing inflation to regain momentum. The market is now pricing in this eventuality, but the key question is what the FOMC will indicate about further rate hikes in 2023. "Fewer hikes might be needed if the recent weakening in business confidence captured by the survey data depresses hiring and investment more than we think, substituting for additional rate hikes," Mericle said.

LONDON/SINGAPORE, Jan 31 (Reuters) - The dollar ticked higher on Tuesday ahead of a raft of central bank decisions but remained on track for its fourth consecutive monthly loss. The Federal Reserve will set interest rates on Wednesday, followed by the European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of England (BoE) on Thursday. That meant it was set for its fourth monthly drop, having fallen around 11% since hitting a 20-year peak in late September. Investors then expect the ECB and BoE to raise their main interest rates by 50 bps each on Thursday. Sterling was last 0.29% lower at $1.231, but was on track for its fourth monthly increase.
Three years on, Britain still waits for Brexit dividend

Britain exited the EU on Jan. 31, 2020, though remained in the bloc's single market and customs union for 11 more months. The government, led by Brexit-supporting Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, says Britain is prospering with new-found freedoms. "Our problems pre-date Brexit," Lyons said, pointing to chronically low rates of investment in Britain. Exports, especially in goods, have disappointed over the last three years - despite high hopes for a "Global Britain" rebalancing of the economy after Brexit. Britain still boasts higher rates of employment and lower unemployment than most EU countries but there are some signs that Brexit may have impacted the labour market too.
"We understand Renault is able to ring fence its own technology within the alliance allowing the firm to collaborate also with other external partners beyond the Renault Nissan alliance. "Overall we welcome this step which will enhance the industrial collaboration within the alliance." JEFFERIES"A re-sized capital structure should help keep the Alliance viable, maintaining synergies and opening up strategic opportunities on both sides. Ultimately it means that a disorderly unwind of the alliance has been avoided which is a positive. Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., the chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), said she has personally spoken to Jeffries and recommended that Rep. Andy Kim, D-N.J., should be the ranking member. “The Republicans made it very clear that the committee is primarily focused on … counter intelligence and economic espionage issues which have been the focus of my own work, especially on the Intelligence Committee,” Krishnamoorthi said in an interview. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., a former CIA analyst who is eyeing a possible Senate bid in 2024, has also expressed interest in the top role on the China panel. But while CAPAC is divided, its members agree that the ranking member of the new panel should be Asian American. Think about that," said one CAPAC member.
However, an inflation measure recently described by Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell as "most important" in determining where inflation will go has increased after being largely flat for the previous two months. In Thursday's CPI report, "services less rent of shelter" showed a 0.4% increase in December. Prior to today's CPI report, the costs of services excluding housing had shown "tentative signs of rebalancing," according to Powell. With "services less rent of shelter" increasing in December, rising inflation will likely remain a concern for the central bank. Similarly, the rising cost of homes and rent is also expected to decrease in the back half of 2023, according to Powell.
New York CNN —The Walt Disney Company has named Nike executive chairman Mark Parker as its new board chair, replacing longtime director Susan Arnold, whose term limit is expiring. Parker, a Disney board member since 2016, takes over Disney’s board at a time of transition for America’s largest media company. Disney said among Parker’s qualifications as board chair is that he navigated a successful CEO transition at Nike. And Disney’s media networks are struggling as cord cutting accelerates and once lucrative outlets like ESPN lose viewership. She praised Parker for helping lead Disney through a difficult period for the company and the broader media industry.

The Case Against Frequent Rebalancing of Portfolios
  + stars: | 2023-01-06 | by ( Mark Hulbert | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Portfolio rebalancing can be necessary—but not as often as many investors believe. The conventional wisdom on portfolio rebalancing is clear: Do it on a regular schedule so your balance of asset classes doesn’t get out of whack. But the statistical evidence is equally clear: Frequent portfolio rebalancing is a largely pointless exercise. The benefits of rebalancing are often exaggerated, and those that are realistic can be achieved at significantly less frequent intervals.
