A great deal of eeriness is due to the highly explosive Russian “petals.” “Petal” — or, “lepestok,” in Russian — is the poetic name of an internationally banned Russian-made anti-personnel landmine. The Russian wish for Ukraine appears to be death: to render Ukrainian land uninhabitable, to maim and kill those who live on it. But as one learns from Kataev’s tale, the Russian petals travel far and know no borders. In November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that 200,000 hectares (almost 50,000 acres) of Ukrainian land were contaminated with unexploded mines and shells. It kind of hit a little different.”To play professionally, athletes must be highly skilled physically as well as mentally, sports psychologists say. Some NFL players say they are struggling to do that after Hamlin’s collapse on Monday night. After an ambulance raced him off the field, the game resumed before a shocked crowd. Once they step out onto the field, they may find their ability to play is as strong as ever.
Two days after his players watched as Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin received emergency medical care for cardiac arrest he suffered on the field, Cincinnati Bengals coach Zac Taylor on Wednesday described for the first time the traumatic scene that played out. Taylor spoke about the expressions he saw on Bills players’ faces, private conversations he had with Buffalo coach Sean McDermott and the raw emotion as the terrifying scene unfolded. Even as they all still grapple with those events, Taylor also didn’t shy away from what the Bengals’ are doing this week: preparing to play the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
