Walgreens announced Wednesday it would continue to cut prices on some 1,300 items — the latest company to pivot to value amid signs U.S. consumers are experiencing spending fatigue. "Walgreens understands our customers are under financial strain and struggle to purchase everyday essentials," said Tracey D. Brown, EVP, President, Walgreens Retail & Chief Customer Officer. Lower-income consumers have been cutting back more substantially. Meanwhile, other areas of the economy more closely tied to wealthier consumers continue to outperform, especially travel.

Nvidia is now a $2.8 trillion company, an eyewatering figure that places the graphics processing unit maker just behind Apple ($2.9 trillion) and Microsoft ($3.2 trillion) in the S & P 500. At the same time, however, more investors wonder if Nvidia is overvalued and they should start taking profits, especially as the broader market comes under pressure from higher Treasury yields. Nvidia has surged above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, and it now boasts a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 66. A move toward the upper band could mean the stock is overbought. Donald Trump could have gone any number of directions on Friday morning in his first speech after becoming a felon. A better human being might have expressed some remorse or a modicum of respect for the jury’s verdict, but that’s not who he is. In fact, what was remarkable about the speech at Trump Tower was how little effect the conviction seems to have had on his permanent vocabulary of grievance. The usual journalistic cliché for speeches like this one is “rambling,” but at least on a ramble you actually go someplace, if slowly. Trump, on the other hand, had no apparent destination.

Prosecutors from the Southern District of New York are fighting a legal battle on two fronts. The government’s ability to sketch a clear and convincing picture for the jury despite these growing constraints will likely determine Menendez’s legal fate. “(She) communicated with the bribe payers, she passed messages to Menendez, and she collected some of the bribes,” Pomerantz said. In addition to Wegovy and Ozempic, the GLP-1 class includes Eli Lilly's highly popular weight loss drug Zepbound and diabetes treatment Mounjaro. VanGilder signed up nearly four years ago and started taking the weekly diabetes injection Ozempic specifically for weight loss. The big difference between Calibrate and prior weight loss efforts, VanGilder said, is that she doesn't feel like she's dieting. Calibrate is one of the only companies to regularly release reports detailing the results of its weight loss program. The federal Medicare program by law can't cover weight loss drugs unless the prescription is for another approved health benefit, such as diabetes or cardiovascular health.

Rishi Sunak’s rival for power is Labour leader Keir Starmer, who is heavily favored to become Britain’s new prime minister in July. Labour leader Keir Starmer -- the frontrunner in the election -- launches his campaign in Gillingham on Thursday. Given Labour’s standing in the polls, Starmer is more equipped to take the fight to other groups. In the UK, voters don’t elect a prime minister directly. But this is a formal role only; the King won’t contradict his prime minister or overrule the results of an election.

CNN —Families of seven female Israeli soldiers captured by Hamas during the October 7 attacks have released graphic footage of their abduction as they pile pressure on the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure their release. The video shows the women — all Israel Defense Forces (IDF) personnel — lined up against a wall, their hands bound. The footage was previously released by Hamas, according to the Hostages Families Forum. The campaigning group obtained it from the IDF, which had previously edited the video to exclude the most disturbing scenes. Efforts to reach a deal that would pause the war in Gaza and allow the release of hostages have repeatedly been dashed.

London CNN —UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a snap general election for July 4 in a statement outside Downing Street on Wednesday evening, as his Conservative Party faces an uphill struggle to extend its 14 years in power. But a fall in inflation rates, announced earlier Wednesday, provided the backdrop for his announcement. The move will be welcomed by the buoyant Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, which is soaring in the opinion polls and has sought to present itself as a reformed and moderate group that is ready for power. Sunak walks back inside on Wednesday after announcing the July 4 date for the election. But Johnson’s premiership collapsed after a string of scandals, paving the way for his then-finance minister Sunak to emerge as a frontrunner for the leadership.

Target lowering prices on 5,000 frequently bought items
  + stars: | 2024-05-20 | by ( Rob Wile | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Target said Monday it will lower prices on approximately 5,000 frequently bought items as it seeks to stay competitive amid signs consumers are experiencing price fatigue. It had already cut prices on some 1,500 other items. "Our teams work hard to deliver great value every day, and these new lower prices across thousands of items will add up to additional big savings for the millions of consumers that shop Target each week for their everyday needs." As the rate of annual inflation remains stuck above 3% and the Fed's key interest rate remains unchanged, many consumers are starting to pull back on spending and becoming more selective about what they purchase. One of Target's chief competitors, Walmart , recently signaled that even higher-income consumers were turning toward its offerings as "wallets are still stretched."
