The field for the second Republican presidential debate will be smaller than the first. Seven candidates have qualified for Wednesday night's debate at Ronald Reagan's presidential library in California, the Republican National Committee said, confirming that former Arkansas Gov. Republican support for him nationally has slipped substantially from its high point earlier this year. The only Republican woman on stage — and in the field — Haley experienced a fundraising bounce after her performance in the first debate. Trump has said he does not want to elevate his lower-polling opponents by participating in a debate against them.

CNN —The 2024 GOP presidential debate stage is shrinking after the Republican National Committee announced late Monday that seven candidates are set to participate in the second debate – down one from their first clash. Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Gov. Former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 GOP nomination, is skipping the event. To qualify for the second debate, GOP candidates had to register at least 3% in two national polls or one national poll and two polls from separate early voting states – Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina or Nevada. Ramaswamy was a dominant figure at the first debate, engaging in memorable clashes with Pence, Christie and Haley.

Doug Burgum appears to have qualified for Wednesday's second GOP primary debate, an NBC News analysis shows. Burgum has been on the outside looking into the second debate with less than a week to go to secure enough support in primary polls to qualify. Burgum appears to have qualified through the latter:The other candidates who appear to have qualified — Florida Gov. Burgum jumped into the GOP presidential race relatively late, without some of the national recognition of some of his rivals. The third Republican presidential debate will be held in Miami on Nov. 8, a day after several states hold off-year elections, and candidates will be facing the most stringent requirements yet to take part. Details of the gathering come as the broad GOP field prepares for a second primary debate without their current front-runner. The requirements for the third debate will be more challenging to meet than the second. Scott, who was second from the right edge of the stage for the first GOP debate last month, has proposed the RNC change how it orders the candidates for next week's debate. The state party had just instituted the pledge requirement in May. Trump and DeSantis have a particularly fierce rivalry in their shared home state of Florida. The oath requirement would have forced primary candidates to back the eventual nominee in order to get placed on the ballot. Former state GOP chairman and state Sen. Joe Gruters asked that the requirement be removed during a party meeting Friday. Gruters is a longtime Trump supporter and is one of the few Republican Florida lawmakers to back the former president over DeSantis.
