Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Jerry Chiemeke, a writer from London, about moving to the UK from Nigeria. AdvertisementI wanted to be known as a writer, but I was unsure whether I should continue developing my career in Nigeria. I wanted to continue building my career as a creative, but I've since found it difficult to find permanent work. Before arriving in the UK, I'd lined up part-time editing work. I've been able to freelance but haven't secured permanent creative work.

CNN —The US military is ending its temporary pier mission off the Gaza coast that has been plagued with challenges after roughly 20 days of operational use, as humanitarian aid begins being brought in through an Israeli port instead. Cooper said the pier was operational for “a little more than 20 days” and delivered 19.4 million pounds of aid. The US military will continue to help deliver the remaining aid from Cyprus to Ashdod, Cooper said. “A temporary pier would enable a massive increase in the amount of humanitarian assistance getting into Gaza every day,” Biden said. During the same storm, four US Army vessels supporting the pier were washed ashore on beaches in Gaza and Israel.

Ocado upgrades technology arm, sending shares soaring

Britain's Ocado lifted its annual guidance on Tuesday, citing an improvement in the profitability of its warehouse technology business, reassuring investors and sending its shares up by 18%. The group runs an online grocer in Britain through a joint venture with Marks & Spencer and also sells its cutting-edge warehouse technology to retailers around the world. Citi analysts said the share price reaction was to be expected given the upgrades to technology and cash expectations, plus weakness in recent days. It also forecast underlying cash flow would improve by 150 million pounds, ahead of a previous expectation of 100 million pounds, and said liquidity remains strong at 1.05 billion pounds. First-half underlying earnings, or adjusted EBITDA, Ocado's preferred measure, was 71.2 million pounds, up from 16.6 million pounds.

Nearly every elementary school student in Japan carries a book bag known as a randoseru, a staple of Japanese childhood for close to 150 years. No one mandates that students use these backpacks, but strong social norms lead most families to purchase them for their children. When fully loaded with textbooks, worksheets, pencil cases and, more recently, digital tablets, the randoseru can weigh close to nine pounds. Made of leather or some sturdy facsimile, randoseru, which cost hundreds of dollars, are meant to last for the entire six years of elementary school. More than a simple school bag, the randoseru is a unique Japanese symbol, reflecting the conformity and consistency that is deeply rooted in the culture.

With more than 1,300 boulangeries and a profound baking culture, Paris has always been an awesome place for your morning pain au chocolat or baguette. But the lovable boulangerie de quartier might rely on additives and premixes. “The new-concept bakeries have a short range of products, a disruptive approach and strong personalities,” said Christophe Vasseur, whose bakery, Du Pain et des Idées, by the Canal St.-Martin, helped kick-start the artisanal bread movement more than two decades ago. Now, tattooed bakers are “rock stars,” as the newspaper Le Figaro called them. A baguette de tradition at the following bakeries costs just over 1 euro, and a loaf of bread is usually priced at €10 to €15, or $11 to $16, per kilo (just over two pounds).

CNN —Writings on an ancient clay tablet have allowed experts to reconstruct a Bronze Age ship made of reeds and sail it on a maiden voyage off the coast of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is the world’s largest reconstruction of a Bronze Age Magan boat, according to the team. The research project’s goals were to uncover ancient craftsmanship techniques, determine the connections between Bronze Age societies and better understand the role Abu Dhabi once played in Bronze Age trade. After passing five days of trials, the ship sailed toward Saadiyat Island off the coast of Abu Dhabi and the open sea on March 2 and 3. “Seeing the Magan Boat sail on the water for the first time actually took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes.”

Now, such technology appears to be on the horizon, with scientists unveiling a prototype spacesuit system that turns urine into drinking water. When spending these long periods on spacewalks, astronauts currently wear the familiar white puffy EVA suits, which contain a maximum absorbency garment. Above is a side view of the whole system, worn as a backpack. ‘Dune’ systemTo “promote astronaut wellbeing,” the researchers have designed a novel in-suit urine collection and filtration system, or “Dune” system,” Etlin said. Rwanda does not have to repay the hundreds of millions of pounds it received from Britain as part of a contentious policy aimed at sending migrants on a one-way flight to the Central African nation, two senior Rwandan government officials say. As part of the deal, Britain was set to give Rwanda as much as about half a billion pounds in development funding in exchange for taking in the migrants. Britain’s independent public spending watchdog said in early March that the country had already paid Rwanda £220 million, about $280 million, even though no asylum seekers had been deported to the African nation. Britain’s new prime minister, Keir Starmer, scrapped the plan after taking over as the country’s leader last week. One of the Rwandan officials, Alain Mukuralinda, the government’s deputy spokesman, said on Wednesday that the agreement did not include a reimbursement clause.

Last month marked the third time that the pier has been disconnected from Gaza because of inclement weather. But once the remaining aid is delivered, the pier is expected to be removed from the coast of Gaza and the operation, which began in mid-May, will end, officials said. Since the pier began operations, more than 19.4 million pounds of humanitarian aid have been delivered via the pier to the collection area in Gaza. Its removal will mark the end of a highly anticipated, but deeply troubled effort to flow humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza. The Pentagon and USAID inspectors general have launched coordinated reviews of the pier operation, they announced last month.
