And a recent AAA survey found that 52 percent of Americans say that compared with before the pandemic, they’re as likely or more likely to consider taking a cruise this year. Which brings us to the other thing that makes American cruises singular: More is always more. My family’s home for four days was once one of the largest passenger ships ever built, some 900 feet long and displacing more than 100,000 tons. While cruises themselves follow the same formula as always, parachuting hedonistic day-trippers into tourist-friendly ports, the post-Covid clientele has changed. Before Covid, the numbers were fairly even, but evidently the blue-state crowd is having a tougher time putting the Diamond Princess out of mind.

“He has created an entirely new phase of musical art and has produced a thoroughly American opera.”The anonymous critic who wrote these bold words didn’t have a performance of Scott Joplin’s “Treemonisha” to evaluate, or a recording. In June 1911, all the reviewer had to go on was Joplin’s 230-page piano-vocal score. “Its production would prove an interesting and potent achievement,” the critic added, “and it is to be hoped that sooner or later, it will be thus honored.”It turned out to be decidedly later. More than half a century passed before the opera finally premiered. When it did, its brilliance, shortcomings and unfinished aspects made it a work begging to be completed — giving creative artists room to experiment boldly with this “new phase of musical art.”◆ ◆ ◆Written and narrated by John Leland

Review: At Mostly Mozart, the Sense of an Ending

Change is coming for the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra and for its longtime music director, Louis Langrée — this month is the beginning of the end of his tenure with the orchestra. When the ensemble appears at Lincoln Center next year it will be with a freshly conceived name, and with the conductor Jonathon Heyward at the helm. So there is a sense of finality hovering over this summer’s offerings, which began last weekend with a free outdoor concert in Damrosch Park. On Tuesday night, Langrée and his players resumed their more typical places in the recently refurbished David Geffen Hall — renovations that kept the festival orchestra out of that theater last year. In remarks before the concert, Langrée warmly recalled his two-decade relationship with the orchestra and with New York audiences.

Emergency service personnel clear a destroyed building near the Odesa Port after a Russian attack on Thursday, July 20. Late last week, Russian cruise missiles blasted the port and an overlooking bluff where the imposing Chinese consulate is located. The city in southern Ukraine is a key cultural center, and has long links with Russia. The attacks also coincide with Russia pulling out of the Black Sea grain deal that was keeping Ukrainian grain flowing to the world. Consider that East Africa, where the World Food Program says millions of people are experiencing unprecedented levels of food insecurity, is hugely dependent on Ukrainian grain.

Pilobolus has been pushing bodies to their limits in unusual shapes and precarious balances since 1971, when its founding members met at Dartmouth College. The company’s leadership has shifted and changed over the years, but what remains is the group’s collaborative approach. The group also possesses commercial appeal despite the origins of its name: Pilobolus is a genus of fungi that grows on herbivore dung. Now under the leadership of Renée Jaworski and Matt Kent — two former company members — Pilobolus, after a pandemic delay, concludes its 50th anniversary tour with a three-week season at the Joyce Theater. Its title, the “Big Five-OH!,” has much in common with aspects of the group’s choreography, which can veer into the painfully cute.

Over the next several years he picked up money as a jazz musician (he played the piano) and day laborer. And friends sometimes arranged for him to write things under their names or pseudonyms. Inevitably, though, the authorities would learn the true identity of the brilliant nuclear physicist-astrologer, and Mr. Kundera realized with certainty there was no way to protect friends who wanted to help him. In London, the first English translation of “The Joke” had been so botched it was hard to know what to make of it. EVERYONE LOVES ROOMS with “character”—but reckoning with oddities like timeworn radiators and awkwardly placed pipes can challenge even pro decorators. One solution: Don’t downplay these aesthetic irregularities, say decor authorities. Instead play them up in bold, eye-drawing paint. This fun, if counterintuitive, strategy celebrates function and can add an unexpected layer of complexity to an otherwise so-so room. We asked Keasler and other interior experts what makes the gutsy approach work and how to do it right.

I’ve been fascinated with film music since elementary school, when I got a cassette tape called “Kid Stuff: An Afternoon at the Movies,” which featured Mr. Williams and the Boston Pops. No one exemplifies this better than Mr. Williams, who is still composing at 91. Mr. Williams accomplished this by inviting the trumpet section of the London Symphony Orchestra to blast away in its most piercing register. As he has with other cues, Mr. Williams has given this particular set piece an afterlife in concert performances. Keep your eyes shut!” Maybe then we’ll stop passively hearing film music and begin actively listening to it.

How a 14-Minute Video on Posture Changed My Life

I crave this feeling, which I associate with sitting in a darkened eye doctor’s office, listening to the soft click of the phoropter. There is another avenue for finding environments that have a swaddling effect on the mind, and that is the sprawling and wildly popular world of ASMR videos on YouTube. Many ASMR videos involve role play, with a YouTuber taking on a specific identity to simulate a one-on-one prom-dress fitting or lice check. While ASMR videos can prompt that nice prickly feeling, they have the broader aim of soothing viewers, many of whom often watch them as a stress-management tool or sleep aid. I started watching ASMR videos during Covid lockdown.

Inside the Shed’s Sonic Sphere

The xx remix did nicely separate the bass, coming up palpably but not too heavily out of the bottom of the sphere, from the voices around and above. For all the souped-up spiffiness of the Sonic Sphere, the programming on Saturday felt like a retread of artists who were more interesting when Alex Poots, the Shed’s artistic director, presented them during his stint at the Park Avenue Armory uptown. Levit, the following year, played Bach as part of an ornate concentration exercise orchestrated by Marina Abramovic. Both of them on Saturday were under 40 minutes, but I found myself getting antsy well before time was up. Perhaps the audiences at Burning Man, the techno-hippie hedonist bonanza in the Nevada desert where a Sonic Sphere was built last year, were more engrossed, experiencing it on harder drugs than the Coke Zero I’d had with dinner.

Some technical issues aside, the experience showed me the potential that AR has to transform the entertainment industry. Magsaman is the founder of the International Arts + Mind Lab, Center for Applied Neuroaesthetics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Ross is the vice president of hardware design at Google. Listening to music or watching a play can help build stronger prefrontal cortex skills like memory. This doesn't mean you have to go out and buy your kid a piano or pay for painting classes. Doesn't matter, Ross says. "It's not about whether the art is good or bad, it's the act of engaging in the art whether it's the making or the beholding" that improves cognition, says Ross.
