which found evidence Biden willfully retained classified materials but that the evidence did not rise to the level of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. And he took on criticism directly over his inclusion of the state of Biden’s memory. On the Republican side, lawmakers pressed Hur on why he didn’t charge Biden despite the evidence of classified documents in Biden’s possession. “In short, to borrow a phrase from the last administration, the Hur report represents the complete and total exoneration of President Biden,” Nadler said. Hur found some evidence that Biden willfully retained classified materials after he left the Obama White House.

On Tuesday, when the special counsel Robert Hur testifies before Congress, it will be high presidential-year political theater. This is just the latest example of the inversion of the aims of the special counsel office. A special counsel is supposed to ensure that the Justice Department can credibly conduct sensitive investigations that are, and that appear to be, fair and apolitical. Yet special counsels (and their precursors) have for decades failed to achieve this goal — a failure that has now reached a peak with two special counsels having an extraordinary impact on a presidential election. Special counsels have had different labels over the years.

Late last month, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky announced that he would leave his position as Republican leader after the November elections. McConnell is not consequential for what he accomplished as a legislator or legislative leader — he’s no Robert F. Wagner or Everett Dirksen. He’s consequential for what he’s done to degrade and diminish American democracy. McConnell, as the journalist Alec MacGillis noted in “The Cynic: The Political Education of Mitch McConnell,” was never driven by ideology. “At some point along the way,” MacGillis wrote, “Mitch McConnell decided that his own longevity in Washington trumped all — that he would even be willing to feed the public’s disillusionment with its elected leaders if it would increase his and his party’s odds of success at the polls.”

CNN —President Joe Biden tried to put voters’ concerns about his age to rest last week with a fiery State of the Union address. In many respects, the damage to Biden was already done by the release of Hur’s report last month. Biden has gamely sought to defuse the age issue, often joking about being aware of his own limitations and contrasting himself favorably with Trump. And the transcript provided more details that provided some added context behind the initial picture painted by Hur’s report. Biden’s age clearly remains his biggest political vulnerability and a key factor in the race.

Like all presidential budgets, Biden's 2025 plan is more of a wish list than it is a policy document. "Do you really think the wealthy and big corporations need another $2 trillion in tax breaks? Biden's populist, progressive, tax-the-rich funding plan is not a novel proposal from his White House. House Republicans tried to preempt Biden's budget proposal last week, by passing their own 2025 budget resolution in a party-line committee vote. Back-and-forth disagreements in Congress have meant that six months into the fiscal year, lawmakers have still not settled on a permanent budget.

Opinion: The one thing Biden and Trump agree on

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. That reference to Election Day is perhaps the only line in Trump’s speech that President Joe Biden would agree with. In another America, they would be collegial members of the Presidents Club, bonding over memories of how they overcame their thorniest challenges. “Biden sounded like he’s ready to go toe to toe with former President Donald Trump and win in November. Paul Sracic noted that Biden lost White voters without college degrees by 35 points in 2020.

Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. AP/ReutersPresident Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump held dueling events Saturday in Georgia, where they each attacked the other as their rematch for the White House ramps up. Signs featuring Riley were passed out to the crowd, and Riley's parents met with Trump backstage before he spoke. Trump slammed Biden after the president said he shouldn't have used the term "illegal." He was an illegal migrant, and he shouldn't have been in our country, and he never would have been under the Trump policy," the former president said.

Read previewPresident Joe Biden on Thursday used his State of the Union to take concerns about his age head on. Advertisement"Now some other people my age see differently, the American story of revenge, resentment, and retribution," Biden said. "My fellow Americans, the issue facing our nation isn't how old we are: It's about how old our ideas are," he said. Polling shows that even in this hyper-partisan era, Americans broadly agree in their concerns about Biden's age. Democrats also bristle about the extent of concerns about Biden's age compared to former President Donald Trump, the man Biden surpassed to become the oldest president.

mary zieglerWell, I think it’s much easier to ban abortion than it is to enforce a criminal law against abortion. mary zieglerNo, I think that’s right. If our abortion politics don’t reflect our abortion views, what does that tell us about the health of the democracy? We’ve seen upwards of 10 states — I think it’s 14 or 15 that have changed their definition of abortion in abortion restrictive states since Dobbs. So, the idea is that abortions that are presented as life saving either are not abortions or are simply pretexts for abortion that’s elective.

The biggest takeaway came from the reviews of voters like Lang: loyal Democrats who have raised important policy and performance issues about the president. On Thursday, these voters saw a president who was listening to their concerns, but they also said that steps in the right direction did not mean the problem was solved. In Biden’s speech, Lang saw some proof that his team is listening. She is more conservative than Biden but saw things to like in his speech, including his “commitment to democracy.”Two topics hit home. “Striking to hear President Biden call for free preschool, but not support the right of families like mine to use our own tax dollars for K-12 education,” Gurr said.

The president delivered a campaign speech in Pennsylvania this afternoon, and he will speak tomorrow in Georgia — two swing states that he is counting on for re-election. The push is meant to capitalize on momentum from last night’s address, in which Biden delivered a series of fiery attacks against Trump, casting him as a threat to American democracy and stability in the world. Roughly 28 million people watched on major cable and broadcast networks, according to preliminary numbers, a bigger prime-time audience than last year. The speech also allowed Biden, 81, to respond to doubts about his age with impassioned lines that were clearly intended to demonstrate vigor. It remains unclear if he can repeat that energetic 67-minute performance as he barnstorms the swing states in the coming weeks.

A spirited President Joe Biden delivered a fiery, partisan State of the Union address on Thursday, fit for an election year with enormously high stakes in a divided nation. "Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy been under assault here at home as they are today," Biden said early in the speech. "What makes our moment rare is that freedom and democracy are under attack, both at home and overseas, at the very same time," he said. "Overseas, [President Vladimir] Putin of Russia is on the march, invading Ukraine and sowing chaos throughout Europe and beyond. "My message to President Putin is simple.

The situation was so dire last year at one Walgreens store in San Francisco, employees resorted to padlocking frozen foods. The effort to undo some aspects of Prop 47 comes amid a broader check on some other liberal crime enforcement policies in America. Police data shows that larceny theft, which includes retail theft and car break-ins, is down 37% from this time last year. On Tuesday, San Francisco voters approved two ballot measures spearheaded by Breed. Last September, the state announced it would be sending $267 million to law enforcement agencies throughout the state to tackle organized retail theft.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, an Arizona independent, announced Tuesday she will retire at the end of her term this year, blaming growing partisanship and mudslinging in Washington for driving her decision to not run for reelection. “I believe in my approach, but it’s not what America wants right now,” Sinema said, in a video announcing her decision. Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona and former Arizona Republican gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake are among the candidates who had been seeking to challenge Sinema. Sen. Steve Daines of Montana, who chairs the Senate GOP’s campaign arm, told CNN that Sinema’s decision not to run for reelection will help Lake’s candidacy. Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s opinion was just a page long, all of two paragraphs. Justice Barrett was the third of Mr. Trump’s appointees, rushed onto the court after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, arriving just before the 2020 election. But she is viewed as one of the more moderate members, relatively speaking, of the court’s six-member conservative supermajority. In public appearances, she is adamant that the court is apolitical, though she sometimes says so in venues that undercut her message. In 2021, for instance, Justice Barrett told an audience in Kentucky that “my goal today is to convince you that this court is not comprised of a bunch of partisan hacks.”

Support for Nuclear Energy Grows in Congress

The House this week overwhelmingly passed legislation meant to speed up the development of a new generation of nuclear power plants, the latest sign that a once-contentious source of energy is now attracting broad political support in Washington. It received backing from Democrats who support nuclear power because it does not emit greenhouse gases and can generate electricity 24 hours a day to supplement solar and wind power. It also received support from Republicans who have downplayed the risks of climate change but who say that nuclear power could bolster the nation’s economy and energy security. “It’s been fascinating to see how bipartisan advanced nuclear power has become,” said Joshua Freed, who leads the climate and energy program at Third Way, a center-left think tank. “This is not an issue where there’s some big partisan or ideological divide.”The bill would direct the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which oversees the nation’s nuclear power plants, to streamline its processes for approving new reactor designs.

Judges in Trump-related cases face unprecedented wave of threats

These broadsides frequently trigger surges in threats against the judges, prosecutors and other court officials he targets, Reuters found. In that time, serious threats against federal judges alone have more than doubled, from 220 in 2020 to 457 in 2023, as Reuters reported on Feb. 13. For judges, threats have always been part of the job. Over the last four years, the Marshals investigated more than 1,200 threats against federal judges that they considered serious, according to the data provided to Reuters. Among the 57 federal prosecutions Reuters identified during that period, 47 involved threats against federal judges, six involved threats against state judges, and four involved threats against both.

New York CNN —The White House is formally calling on Fox News to walk back its coverage of bribery and corruption allegations against President Joe Biden. The letter is the latest from the Biden White House, which has taken a more aggressive approach to news coverage of the president that it sees as unfair in the run-up to the November election. Earlier this month, Sams sent a letter to the White House Correspondents’ Association, protesting coverage of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on Biden’s handling of classified material. Since Fox News has declined to take the responsible course of action and meaningfully correct the record, the White House is now moving to formally request the network do so. Like the senators from his birth state, Biden should ignore these threats from the left and stand up strongly for his vital center perspective. Looking at Michigan specifically, the threat of Arab Americans tanking Biden must also be put in wider perspective. Even with these larger trends in the state, the authors find: “In Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck, and Livonia — the Michigan cities with the highest proportion of Arab American voters — Biden defeated Trump by a combined 38,000 or so votes.
