North Korea got a good deal by sending its officials to help Russia's Ukraine war, experts said. In a discussion on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: "North Korea has, in fact, entered the war," per state-run outlet United24 Media. Even limited numbers of North Korean officials aiding Russia offers a vital boost for Kim Jong Un and his regime, experts told Business Insider. "It's a win-win situation," Joseph S. Bermudez Jr., a North Korea defense expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said. Among the North Korean elite, there's also a hunger for consumer goods, which Russia's support can help to provide, Bennett said.

Year to date, U.S. crude oil has fallen more than 1%. But Croft warned of a spiral of escalation that could ultimately lead to an oil disruption. Israel could be holding the oil card in reserve until they see how Iran responds to their strike, she said. OPEC also has millions of barrels per day in spare capacity that could jump into the breach if there is a supply disruption. “They will want to see that there is a physical supply disruption before they really jump in front of this.”

As has been the case for previous Woodward books, those who don’t come out well from his reporting publicly dismiss it. Woodward notes that neither Biden nor Trump spoke to him for this book, but he still got great access. It’s clear from a close reading of “War” that almost every top national security official in the Biden administration spoke with him. The Biden administration has halted the shipment of massive 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, but otherwise, the large flow of American weapons to the Jewish state continues. Coats told Woodward, “It’s still a mystery to me how he deals with Putin and what he says to Putin.

Technology giants are turning to nuclear energy to power the energy-intensive data centers needed to train and run the massive artificial intelligence models behind today's generative AI applications. Microsoft and Google are among the firms agreeing deals to purchase nuclear power from certain suppliers in the U.S. to bring additional energy capacity online for its data centers. This week, Google said it would purchase power from Kairos Power, a developer of small modular reactors, to help "deliver on the progress of AI." Google said its first nuclear reactor from Kairos Power would be online by 2030, with more reactors going live through 2035. The tech giant isn't the only firm looking to nuclear power to realize its AI ambitions.

Citi is warning that Constellation Energy could face execution risks in restarting the Three Mile Island nuclear plant , initiating coverage of the high-flying power stock with caution. But Citi analyst Ryan Levine warned that Constellation will likely face cost overruns and delays in restarting Three Mile Island. Every month that the project is delayed could shave 9 cents off Constellation's stock, according to Levine. Levine also warned that Constellation could face challenges inking deals to directly power data centers with its nuclear reactors, the largest such fleet in the country. About 35% of Constellation's current stock price assumes power sales from its nuclear fleet to the tech companies scaling up data centers.

Washington CNN —Sen. JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, falsely claimed Sunday that former President Donald Trump “didn’t go after his political opponents” during his presidency – an assertion that is contradicted by a mountain of evidence. As president, Trump publicly and privately pressured the Justice Department, and others in his administration, to investigate or prosecute numerous political opponents. Trump made extensive behind-the-scenes efforts to get his political opponents charged with crimes. But you don’t have to rely on investigative reporting or the memoirs of former administration officials to know that Trump went after political opponents as president. As CNN reporter Marshall Cohen has noted, there is a long list of political opponents whom Trump publicly called for the Justice Department and others to investigate or prosecute.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —North Korea blew up parts of two major roads connected to the southern part of the peninsula on Tuesday, South Korean authorities said, after Pyongyang warned it would take steps to completely cut off its territory from the South. South Korea's Defense MinistryOn Monday, South Korea said it had detected signs that North Korea was preparing to demolish roads that connect the two countries, warning that the explosions could occur imminently. The blasts come a few days after North Korea accused South Korea of flying propaganda-filled drones over its capital Pyongyang and threatened “retaliation,” in the latest tit-for-tat exchange following months of Pyongyang sending trash-laden balloons to the South. North and South Korea have been separated since the Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice agreement. Since January, Pyongyang has fortified its border defenses, laying land mines, building anti-tank traps and removing railway infrastructure, according to the South Korean military.

President Joe Biden, who has conveyed in public his opposition to striking Tehran’s nuclear and oil facilities, discussed Israel’s plans with Netanyahu during a classified phone call last week. In that conversation, Netanyahu relayed to Biden his plan to hit military targets, the person said. The Washington Post first reported that Netanyahu had reassured Biden of his plans to avoid nuclear and oil targets. And hitting Iran’s nuclear facilities could trigger the full-blown regional war that Biden has desperately sought to avoid. American officials have said they expected a measured response from Israel, believing the country did not want an out-of-control conflict with Iran.

Oil prices slid $2 in early Asian trade on Tuesday as OPEC lowered its outlook for global oil demand growth in 2024 and 2025 and a media report that Israel is willing to strike Iranian military and not nuclear or oil targets. Brent crude futures were down $2.11, or 2.7%, at $75.35 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell $2.07, or 2.8%, to $73.76 per barrel as of 0045 GMT. Three U.S.-based academics won the 2024 Nobel economics prize on Monday for their research into why global inequality persists, especially in countries dogged by corruption and dictatorship. The laureates have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for achieving this,” said Jakob Svensson, Chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences. Last year, Harvard economic historian Claudia Goldin won the prize for her work highlighting the causes of wage and labour market inequality between men and women. In 2019, economists Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer won the award for work on fighting poverty. The economics prize has been dominated by U.S. academics since its inception, while U.S.-based researchers also tend to account for a large portion of winners in the scientific fields for which 2024 laureates were announced last week.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea is getting ready to blow up roads that cross the heavily militarized border with South Korea, Seoul said Monday, amid an escalating war of words after the North accused its rival of sending drones over its capital, Pyongyang. North Korea on Friday accused South Korea of sending drones to scatter a “huge number” of anti-North leaflets over Pyongyang, in what it called political and military provocation that could lead to armed conflict. The North Korean army said last week that it would completely cut roads and railways connected to South Korea and fortify the areas on its side of the border, KCNA reported. North Korea over the weekend warned of a “horrible disaster” if South Korean drones were again found to be flying over Pyongyang. South Korea has sought to strengthen its anti-drone defenses since 2022, Lee said, when five North Korean drones entered its airspace and flew over the capital, Seoul, for several hours.

Google said Monday that it will purchase power from small modular reactor developer Kairos Power, as tech companies increasingly turn to nuclear power as a way to fulfill the growing energy demands from data centers. Monday's announcement is another example of the growing partnership between tech companies and nuclear power. Data centers need 24/7 reliable power, and right now nuclear is the only source of emissions-free baseload power. Many hyperscalers have ambitious emissions-reduction targets, which is why they're turning to nuclear power.
