Forcing the issue is the end of many of the tax cuts Republicans passed in 2017. Republicans want to protect their handiwork and extend the tax cuts before they lapse. By conventional budget rules in Washington, doing so would amount to a tax cut — and an expensive one at that. Republicans are struggling to come up with other tax increases or spending cuts to cover that cost. So maybe it is not a surprise that some of them are starting to advance an alternative theory of the case: that continuing existing tax cuts actually costs nothing.

Omar Gonzalez, another opposition member living in the embassy, posted a video on X showing Venezuelan police outside the diplomatic building. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro claimed victory in the July election, despite widespread skepticism in the country and overseas about the result. President-elect Donald J. Trump repeatedly promised voters that he would cut energy and electricity prices in half within 18 months of taking office. The emerging plan is a repackaging of Mr. Trump’s energy policy. Advisers think Mr. Trump can lower prices by boosting oil and gas production, which is already at record levels in the United States. But energy industry experts noted that a president has limited tools to influence how much Americans pay at the pump, and even less leverage when it comes to electricity prices. More than a dozen experts said Mr. Trump’s strategy might succeed in lowering prices, but not enough to meet his goal.

Russia has fired about 60 North Korean KN-23 missiles at Ukraine this year, according to a Ukrainian defense official. These less-sophisticated missiles are part of North Korea’s growing support to Moscow, which also includes about 11,000 North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia’s Kursk region. Strikes using North Korean missiles have killed at least 28 people and injured 213 this year, the Ukrainian prosecutor general told CNN. Ukrainian investigators found evidence that crucial components used in the North Korean missiles are produced by at least nine Western manufacturers. There are more than 250 companies whose components have been identified in North Korean missiles, according to CAR.

But at 2:40 a.m. local time Sunday, more than 30 hours after deadline, the gavel finally went down on the agreement between nearly 200 countries. “It has been a difficult journey, but we’ve delivered a deal,” said Simon Stiell, head of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Rich countries, which are overwhelmingly responsible for historical climate change, agreed in 2009 to provide $100 billion a year by 2020 to developing countries. The G77 group of developing countries had called for a sum of $500 billion. “We have arrived at the boundary between what is politically achievable today in developed countries and what would make a difference in developing countries,” said Avinash Persaud, special advisor on climate change to the President of the Inter-American Development Bank.

CNN —The McRib is returning to menus this holiday season – but don’t get used to it. Essentially, consumers don’t know when it will show up next — and that element of surprise also drives demand. “It creates this sense of urgency that you have to get it now because you don’t know when it’s coming back. Hyundai Motor North America announced it will recall more than 42,000 vehicles due to a wiring issue that can cause the automobiles to roll away, according to a notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Wednesday. The 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz and Hyundai Tucson vehicles subject to the recall have transmissions that can shift out of "park" without the brake pedal having to be applied, increasing the risk of a crash or an injury, per the administration. All 2025 Santa Cruz and Tucson vehicles in the U.S. are subject to the recall, including more than 35,500 Tucson and 6,900 Santa Cruz vehicles -- around 1% of the vehicles are estimated by the NHTSA to have the defect. In early November, it was discovered that the wiring issue that caused the issue with the Tucson vehicle may also have impacted Santa Cruz vehicles. This prompted a review from the North America Safety Decision Authority on Nov. 13 and a recall of the vehicles.

The sweeping tariffs that President-elect Donald J. Trump imposed in his first term on foreign metals, machinery, clothing and other products were intended to have maximum impact around the world. They sought to shutter foreign factories, rework international supply chains and force companies to make big investments in the United States. But for many businesses, the most important consequences of the tariffs, enacted in 2018 and 2019, unfolded just a few blocks from the White House. In the face of pushback from companies reliant on foreign products, the Trump administration set up a process that allowed them to apply for special exemptions. The stakes were high: An exemption could relieve a company of tariffs as high as 25 percent, potentially giving it a big advantage over competitors.

Mexico gained tens of thousands of jobs when U.S. and foreign automakers moved their plants to Mexico under the free trade pact to take advantage of much lower wages. But the idea that Chinese parts — or even whole cars — could be piggybacking on that arrangement to further hollow out the U.S. auto industry has enraged some people north of the border. Mexico hopes the rules of the agreement would prevent the U.S. or Canada from simply walking away when the trade pact comes up for review in 2026. Mexican officials say they have fewer imports of Chinese parts and products than the United States does. In the end, Mexico may be forced to crack down on Chinese imports, but it won't be easy.

He promised salvation for a country “in ruins” — an end to immigration, a civil service stripped of entrenched left-wing opponents, a judiciary purged of meddlesome judges and a news media giving voice to the people instead of elites. Those campaign pledges — similar to ones made by Donald J. Trump during his successful bid for a second term as U.S. president — helped bring Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his nationalist Law and Justice party to power in Poland in 2015. More than a year after an election that ended that party’s eight-year rule, its liberal successors are still struggling to undo the “new state apparatus” that Mr. Kaczynski helped put in place and that legal experts say seriously damaged Poland’s legal system. Unwinding the legacy of populist conservative rule “takes longer than you expect,” said Adam Bodnar, the justice minister at the forefront of the new government’s efforts to reverse Poland’s retreat from liberal democracy under Law and Justice.
