There were no metal detectors, Ryan noted, and nobody patted you down when you walked in the door. The City Council would later remove El Centro from the chopping block, and credited student testimony in particular. But in “Live to See the Day,” the sociologist Nikhil Goyal writes that Ryan questioned why El Centro had been threatened with closure in the first place. “Why did they have to beg the people in power for public schools that respected and helped their students?” Goyal asks. The safety net is in tatters, Goyal shows, and poverty is a tightrope walk with no room for error.

Political violence in polarized U.S. at its worst since 1970s

Three academics who reviewed the cases say they add to growing evidence that America is grappling with the biggest and most sustained increase in political violence since the 1970s. Political violence surged for nearly a decade starting in the late-1960s – 1970 alone saw more than 450 cases, LaFree said. In contrast, much of today’s political violence is aimed at people – and most of the deadly outbursts tracked by Reuters have come from the right. “Political warfare”There’s no official tally of how many Americans die each year from political violence. Most of the fatal political violence identified by Reuters was carried out by people who embraced far-right views.

Maj. Joshua Mast, after a raid on an Afghan village, tried for years to adopt a baby he found in the rubble. The high-profile legal battle pits an Afghan family against an American one, and has drawn responses from the White House and the Taliban. The AP has located no records of the birth of the farmer's baby or photographs of her with the family before the raid. Four of the farmer's children had survived, so covered with dust and dirt they were almost unrecognizable, said neighbor Rahim. Mr. Solis, who earns about $3,500 a month delivering for apps like DoorDash, used to send about $1,500 monthly. Since the spring, he has had to send more than $2,000 to cover the same expenses, something he does by working longer days. That means each dollar Mr. Solis sends covers less of the budget back home.
