On the early morning of May 11, 1881, Capt. John Higgins and his eight-man crew scurried onto a lifeboat and caught a final glimpse of their schooner, Trinidad, as it disappeared into the icy waters of Lake Michigan. After 142 years, its wreckage has finally been discovered. Trinidad was built at Grand Island, N.Y., in 1867 and was used as a cargo ship in the lucrative grain trade between Milwaukee, Chicago and Oswego, N.Y., according to a news release. “A lot of these schooners were built for one thing,” Mr. Baillod said in a phone interview on Friday evening.

We visited four Subway in Southern California to figure out how Roark can fix the brand. So I visited four Subway stores near my Southern California home. It is one of hundreds of Subway stores that have been remodeled over the years. In 2021, The New York Times conducted its lab test and published a report stating that it found no tuna DNA in Subway tuna sandwiches. I ordered the tuna sandwich at a Subway in Santa Ana, California, an aging stand-alone store in a former adobe-style Taco Bell building.

The Dharavi slum, about three-quarters the size of New York's Central Park, featured in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning 2008 movie "Slumdog Millionaire". Only those who already lived in Dharavi before 2000, mostly ground-floor residents, will get free homes within the redevelopment. In interviews with Reuters, some Dharavi residents cited the billionaire's financial troubles as contributing to their concerns. Last month, a Mumbai court allowed SecLink to add Adani to its lawsuit, forcing the conglomerate to defend its position before judges. In early August, about 300 opposition supporters and residents gathered in Dharavi to object to Adani's involvement.

Hawaii residents, like Puerto Ricans, who faced disasters before them, are not asking to be saved. They ask only to be allowed to help themselves in the face of failing emergency services and federal aid. But the entrenched vulnerabilities produced by colonialism are not so easily overcome. For example, some residents have been begging tourists to stay away as the community recovers. It will only worsen if weeks of absent federal aid turn into months of bureaucratic labyrinths and endless red tape, as has happened so often.

Savers are now getting higher cash yields after several interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. "Everyone thinks it's kind of a free lunch," said Tommy Lucas, a certified financial planner and enrolled agent at Moisand Fitzgerald Tamayo in Orlando, Florida. Falling into the regular tax brackets, ordinary income is less favorable than long-term capital gains. Similarly, taxable money market funds — which typically invest in shorter-term lower-credit-risk debt — and Treasury bills also trigger ordinary income. It was August 2021, during the waning months of the frothy startup bull market, and Fin Capital was on the ascent. The message was a phishing attack — Fin Capital had been hacked. But there is dispute over how Fin Capital handled the attack and its aftermath. Still, as other firms have sharply pulled back on investing in the downturn, Fin Capital has done the opposite. It's unclear whether the whistleblower complaints that former Fin Capital employees filed with the SEC are being investigated.

Almost 9 in 10 young investors have actively traded stocks this year due to higher interest rates and inflation, according to a new Bankrate survey. "If younger investors trade in and out of the market, that's almost guaranteed to underperform," said James Royal, a Bankrate analyst who conducted the research. The Federal Reserve started raising interest rates aggressively in March 2022 to rein in persistently high inflation. But higher interest rates also meant better rates on savings accounts, such as high-yield accounts offered by online banks. Eighty-seven percent of Generation Z investors have responded to higher interest rates and inflation by buying or selling stocks, or by withholding additional investment, according to Bankrate.

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services announced this week that it would be awarding about $140 million in student loan relief to more than 2,900 workers in the state. The aid comes from the MA Repay Program, which the state launched last November to provide financial support to health-care workers, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and social workers. The student loan awards range between $12,500 and $300,000 per borrower. The Massachusetts program is one of the many state efforts to reduce people's education debt burden. "There are many other opportunities for loan forgiveness that often go unknown because there is no global database of all student loan forgiveness options," said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz.

Rich people use Roth IRAs for tax advantagesRich people are always looking to minimize the impact of taxes, and Roth IRAs are designed to do just that. Roth IRAs do have income limits, but that doesn't mean wealthy people and high earners don't use them. Earning a good salary is one thing, feeling "rich" is another. Some even said they feel poor, according to a recent survey conducted by Bloomberg. Of those making more than $175,000 a year, or roughly the top 10% of tax filers, one-quarter said they were either "very poor," "poor" or "getting by but things are tight." Despite their high net worth, less than half of all millionaires, or 44%, felt "very comfortable," a separate report by Edelman Financial Engines also found. In fact, only 12% of Americans — and just 29% of millionaires — consider themselves wealthy, the report said.

Why it matters: “For most of the last two decades, China’s economic growth has been a major driver of the global economy,” said Alex Etra, a strategist at data analytics firm Exante. That means that if China’s economy slows down, global economic growth slows down. ExxonMobil (XOM) may not be doing too much business with China, said Etra, but if Chinese growth slows, that means oil prices go down. Earlier this year, Bank of America compiled a list of the S&P 500 companies with the highest exposure to China. The grand total of all the private wealth in the world fell 2.4% to $454.4 trillion last year, according to the annual Credit Suisse and UBS global wealth report.

Here’s the deal: The grand total of all the private wealth in the world fell 2.4% to $454.4 trillion, according to the annual Credit Suisse and UBS global wealth report. Meanwhile, global median wealth, a more meaningful indicator of how the typical person is faring, actually rose 3% in 2022. The top 1% of households still hold a staggering 44.5% of all global wealth. “The global economy is experiencing a period of astonishing economic alteration,” wrote Paul Donovan Chief Economist at UBS Global Wealth Management, in the report. Another silver lining: According to Credit Suisse projections, global wealth will rise 38% over the next five years, reaching $629 trillion by 2027.

Kourtney is married to a UPS driver in Rhode Island. Kourtney says she sees how hard the job is and drivers deserve the new $170,000 contract deal. Russia added $600 billion of total wealth last year, a report by UBS indicated. The number of millionaires and ultra-high-net-worth individuals also rose, despite the war in Ukraine raging on. Meanwhile, the US and Europe shed trillions of dollars worth of wealth, the Swiss bank reported. Russia added $600 billion of total wealth, the Swiss bank found in its annual Global Wealth Report, published Tuesday. Rising oil prices could be one factor behind the wealth increase, with exports of the commodity a key economic engine for Russia.

For the first time since 2008, global wealth declined, falling by 2.4% in dollar terms, largely because of whipsawing currencies, UBS and Credit Suisse economists said Tuesday. The banks’ global wealth report said Americans were hit hardest as stocks and bonds fell in value. That was partly offset by prices of houses and some other assets rising.
