The charges will inflate Siemens Energy's net loss more than six-fold in 2023 to 4.5 billion euros, the company said, as it published third-quarter results showing a record order backlog due to strong demand. Siemens Energy shares reversed an opening fall of as much as 7% to stand 1.5% higher on the day by 0725 GMT. "Our third-quarter results demonstrate the challenges in turning around Siemens Gamesa," Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch said, adding that the group's remaining units, including gas turbines and power converter stations, performed well. While in line with Siemens Energy's own estimate of more than 1 billion euros, Monday's cost tally for the issues is below the most pessimistic market estimate of more than 5 billion euros issued by UBS.

All six known reports of false arrests due to facial recognition technology were made by Black people. As activists have warned for several years, facial recognition technology and AI can exacerbate racial inequity in policing. Several police departments across the country use facial recognition technology to identify suspects in certain investigations. Wired reported that Deborah Levi, a Maryland public defender, said the Baltimore Police Department ran nearly 800 facial recognition searches in 2022. In 2020, Detroit's police chief said their facial recognition technology, when used alone, fails 96% of the time, Insider previously reported.

She had been running, by that stage, for roughly 100 minutes, mounting what appeared at times to be a fearsome, one-woman campaign to keep South Africa in the Women’s World Cup for as long as possible. But Kgatlana, as she had already amply proved in this tournament, does not believe in stopping. First, she spun and writhed and twisted away from a defender, leaving her sprawled on the turf. "Barbie" is less than $100 million away from topping $1 billion at the global box office. "Joining the billion-dollar box office club is a watershed moment for 'Barbie' and Greta Gerwig as the latter will become the first solo female director to achieve that feat," said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. Anna Boden, co-director of Disney's "Captain Marvel," was the first female director to be attached to a billion-dollar live-action film. When "Barbie" tops this mark, it will become the first billion-dollar film to do so for the newly minted Warner Bros. REUTERS/Violeta Santos MouraLISBON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Pope Francis visited a Church-run social centre in a low-income Lisbon neighbourhood Friday, urging young people to shun "distilled," orderly lives where everything seems perfect but to "get your hands dirty" by helping the needy. "Tangible love is that which gets its hands dirty," he said. The 86-year-old pope is in Lisbon for the Catholic Church's World Day of Youth festival, which ends on Sunday. "Through your actions, your commitment, by getting your hands dirty, by touching the reality and misery of others, you are creating inspiration, you are generating life," he said.

For the week, the risk-sensitive currency was down 0.9%, its third straight weekly decline, as a jump in long-term bond yields rattled equity market investors. The Canadian economy shed 6,400 jobs in July, missing estimates for a gain of 21,100, while the jobless rate ticked up to 5.5%. Money markets see chances of another Bank of Canada rate hike this year at about 50%, down from 80% before the jobs report. Canadian government bond yields fell across the curve.

Oil prices are up 20% and energy stocks are rebounding

New York CNN —Energy stocks are making a comeback after being left for dead earlier this year. Energy stocks faltered in the beginning of the year, defying investors’ expectations for last year’s boom to accelerate on a lack of global supply. That drop in energy stocks came despite OPEC+ producers, the cartel of oil producing countries plus Russia, announcing several output cuts in a bid to bump up crude prices. US WTI crude oil prices have gained 22% since June 11, while global benchmark Brent is up by 19%. Jobs report will likely be strongMarkets and economists are expecting another solid jobs report on Friday, reports my colleague Alicia Wallace.

The Germans are looking to bounce back with a win over South Korea, which, while mathematically alive, is most likely exiting the Women’s World Cup after its final game. Colombia leads the group with a commanding 6 points, but needs to avoid a rout by Morocco, which might be able to advance with a win. South Korea vs. GermanyGermany, surprised by a last-minute defeat against Colombia, is coming off its first loss in the group stage since 1995. South Korea can only advance by defeating Germany by five goals or more. With that win, Colombia rose to the top of the group and all but guaranteed its berth in the round of 16.

Lower oil prices dragged the energy sector (.SPTTEN) down 0.7%. In the neighboring U.S., manufacturing appeared to stabilize at weaker levels in July, data showed, amid a gradual improvement in new orders.
