Pay-transparency laws on the whole have helped companies develop healthier work environments, Ward said. AdvertisementAdvertisement"It can create a negative dynamic between new and old employees, and it can lead to really counterproductive comparisons of your peers, which ultimately demotivates those employees," Ward added. Over the past decade, dozens of laws were passed nationwide prohibiting employers from firing or reprimanding workers for publicly discussing salaries. Younger workers are more likely to discuss pay with their colleagues and friends — as well as on social media. Do you live in a state with pay-transparency laws?

New York City alone is sheltering and feeding an average of 59,000 migrants a day. There are job openings many newcomers could fill in areas like food service, if they’re given the ability to work. And the federal government needs to give stressed-out regions — particularly New York City — a whole lot more help when it comes to housing. Over the long run, we absolutely have to open up options for multifamily housing in suburban areas that have long resisted it. The administration has expanded federal border resources in an effort to make processing families faster.

While the trial marks the tech sector's first major anti-monopoly proceeding in decades, Google is squarely in the middle of its antitrust battles. What the trial is aboutA key focus of the trial will be on two kinds of agreements Google has made with other companies. "The cases have very compatible theories, and the core message from both is that Google's monopoly power has been abused, harming competition and hurting consumers," Weiser said. Walker wrote that the abundance of places where consumers can use online search shows that Google hasn't foreclosed competition. In addition to experts like economists, expect to see Google executives called to the stand, potentially including CEO Sundar Pichai.

Seeing the U.S. Open in an Unusual Light

The U.S. Open, which I have covered for five years for The New York Times, has no shortage of opportunities for staggering visuals. But the event is, and this will come as no surprise to anyone who has attended, absolutely crawling with photographers. All of the major wire services have multiple photographers on site, as do many newspapers and magazines from around the world. And while we all bring something different to our profession that allows us to make unique pictures, I am always thinking of ways to capture the event in a different light. And infrared is, quite literally, different light.

New York CNN —The Queen, better known as Beyoncé, had a dress code in mind for Renaissance tour concert goers attending her “House of Chrome,” as she described her concerts. Unprecedented salesAt a pivotal moment during each concert, Beyoncé flicks her wrist and pans out her black handheld fan. A group of fans pose for a portrait before entering Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023 in Inglewood, CA. “I did not see them becoming my best seller, much less my by-far-best-seller, because of something as random as a concert tour,” Fritts said. That demand was quickly replaced with silver bedazzled shades earlier this month after Beyoncé’s silver announcement.

Now, many news outlets are seeing an increase in downloads and usage of their apps. Meta's decision to block user access to news in Canada is not having an entirely negative effect on the country's major publishers. The Globe and Mail in August saw a 98% increase in app downloads and a 27% increase in daily users; CTV News saw a 157% increase in app downloads and an 83% increase in daily usage; La Presse saw a 32% increase in app downloads and an 8% increase in usage; and The National Post's downloads were up almost 10%, with daily usage up 3%. Meanwhile, CBC News saw downloads and daily usage remain relatively flat. "In recent weeks, we have seen an increase in CTV News app downloads, which demonstrates the importance of having access to online news from a Canadian perspective."

The Federal Aviation Administration indicated Friday that it is moving toward requiring that planes be equipped with technology designed to prevent close calls around airports. The FAA asked an internal advisory panel to make recommendations on how to require systems that would alert pilots if they are lined up to land on the wrong runway or a taxiway, or when the runway they have chosen is too short. The FAA said the move is part of its effort to eliminate “serious close calls.” The National Transportation Safety Board has started investigations into seven such incidents since January. Planes typically have GPS-based systems that warn pilots if they are in danger of hitting the ground or an obstacle. He said the FAA move “sounds like a very good idea.”Preliminary reports about close calls this year point to pilot error in some cases and air controller mistakes in others.

Envisioned two decades ago to add vibrancy and draw people to a place of devastation and mourning, the Perelman Performing Arts Center is finally arriving at a very different ground zero. Still, organizers believe the arts space, also called “PAC NYC,” has an important role to play in one of the most sensitive, historic spaces in the United States. “The performing arts center is kind of an amenity for a luxury neighborhood that they built,” said Todd Fine, who runs a advocacy business for historical preservation in lower Manhattan. Early on, the arts center was to house three established groups — two theaters and a visual arts museum — plus a new museum celebrating freedom. Then he came to see it as a step forward for the trade center and on a personal level, an embrace of living life fully.

Unlike many recent New York City transplants, Dina Elachi and Victor Wong started looking for a house in the Hudson Valley in 2019, before the Covid pandemic supercharged the market. “We had been coming up here a lot for biking, hiking, rock climbing and ice climbing,” said Dr. Elachi, 36, a neonatologist and assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. “The area we were in wasn’t good for Wonton,” Dr. Elachi said. Of course, as Ms. Sweeney reminded them, “For most sellers, a lower down payment would not be a good thing. It was up to me to sell the story of allowing someone with debt to do what Americans want to do, which is own a home.”The search was “very exhausting,” Dr. Elachi said.

REUTERS/Angelika Warmuth/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMUNICH, Sept 6 (Reuters) - German carmakers are ready to tackle their worst crisis, an executive at Chinese EV maker Xpeng said on Wednesday, as China's carmakers expand overseas, putting pressure on Europe in the race to electrify. Globally, China leads EV sales, the latest data from tech industry researcher Counterpoint shows. The U.S. has the fastest growing EV sales with Germany in third place. "The Chinese companies are flooding into overseas markets like mushrooms, deepening their sense of crisis," Gu said. A Huge Threat to the U.S. Budget Has Receded. For decades, runaway Medicare spending was the story of the federal budget. Budget news often sounds apocalyptic, but the Medicare trend has been unexpectedly good for federal spending, saving taxpayers a huge amount relative to projections. In a recent letter to the Senate Budget Committee, economists at the Congressional Budget Office described the huge reductions in its Medicare forecasts between 2010 and 2020. Medicare is growing more slowly than ever, but still more quickly than the rest of the federal budget.

The answer matters a lot to Federal Reserve officials who closely monitor the labor market. Some Fed officials believe more rate hikes are needed to cool the labor market. But the gap between ADP and BLS data does not automatically narrow when comparing ADP to BLS estimates of only private-sector jobs. Between the two, it’s difficult to say which is a better predictor of the true state of the labor market. Ultimately, ADP and BLS data “become checks on each other,” she told CNN.

New York CNN —Newspaper chain Gannett has paused the use of an artificial intelligence tool to write high school sports dispatches after the technology made several major flubs in articles in at least one of its papers. Several high school sports reports written by an AI service called LedeAI and published by the Columbus Dispatch earlier this month went viral on social media this week — and not in a good way. Many of the reports feature identical language, describing “high school football action,” noting when one team “took victory away from” another and describing “cruise-control” wins. Gannett has paused its experiment with LedeAI in all of its local markets that had been using the service, according to the company. CNET earlier this year also paused an experiment using AI to write stories after it was forced to issue multiple corrections on AI-generated reports.

Non-GAAP earnings-per-share (EPS) of $2.12 grew 78% from last year and beat the $1.90-per-share EPS predicted by analysts, Refinitiv data showed. While the solid margin beat and upside to earnings are similar to what Salesforce reported back in May, one key difference this time was the increased revenue outlook. It now expects to hit $34.7 billion to $34.8 billion, up from $34.5 billion to $34.7 billion. Salesforce raised its GAAP EPS range to $3.50 to $3.52, up from $2.67 to $2.69, and non-GAAP EPS range to $8.04 to $8.06, up from $7.41 to $7.43. Salesforce also expects its cPRO to grow slightly above 11% from last year and that's slightly better than estimates of 10.8% growth.

Marijuana is currently a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it's deemed to have no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. The news sent shares of several cannabis companies, including Canopy Growth , Tilray Brands and Cronos Group , jumping Wednesday. Strike votes concluded Thursday among about 145,000 UAW members at General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, the company that sells vehicles under the Ram, Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler names. Even with a recent increase in strikes across the US, most labor negotiations conclude with an agreement and not a strike. Union President Shawn Fain and the UAW are talking up an ambitious set of goals in this year’s negotiations. The workers at those plants are not going to be employees of GM, Ford or Stellantis. And the plants either are paying or are expected to pay far less than UAW members make at the assembly, engine and transmission plants covered by these three contracts.
