Chipmaker Intel restructures manufacturing business
  + stars: | 2023-06-21 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
June 21 (Reuters) - Intel Corp (INTC.O) said on Wednesday its manufacturing business will work like a separate unit and will begin to generate a margin, but gave no clear timeline on when it will start scaling up, sending the chipmaker's shares down about 5%. The company also did not name a new external customer for the business as part of its foundry services, a key element of Intel's turnaround plans wherein it will offer its manufacturing services to other companies including its competitors. Intel's internal business units will now have a customer-supplier relationship with the manufacturing business, Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner said on an investor call. Based on that model, Intel will be the second largest foundry next year with manufacturing revenue of more than $20 billion, he said. "The presentation essentially tells investors that its current manufacturing is sub-scale and could remain sub-scale for a while," Chan added.

June 16 (Reuters) - Spirit Aerosystems (SPR.N) has reached a tentative four-year contract agreement with the 6,000-member machinists union employed at its Wichita, Kansas plant, the union said Friday in a statement. "This fair and competitive contract recognizes the important contributions of our factory employees and ensures that Spirit can successfully meet increasing demand for aircraft from customers," Spirit Aerosystems said in an emailed statement. A slowdown could have impeded Boeing as it tries to recover from ongoing 737 and 787 production glitches. A stoppage could have also had a detrimental effect on already-fragile Spirit AeroSystems, which has been responsible for several recent production flaws affecting Boeing jets, including a 737 bracket installation problem. In May, Spirit said it expects cash burn of about $100 million to $150 million in 2023.

SK Signet to launch EV chargers with Tesla's charging standard
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
June 15 (Reuters) - Electric-vehicle (EV) charger maker SK Signet (260870.KN) said on Thursday it was adding products compatible with the North American Charging Standard (NACS), after major U.S. automakers Ford (F.N) and GM (GM.N) said they were adopting Tesla's (TSLA.O) model of charging. Electric vehicle charging companies are cautiously embracing Tesla's charging technology as the main U.S. standard, as they are in danger of losing out on customers if they offer only the Combined Charging System (CCS). Earlier this week, EV charging equipment makers Blink Charging (BLNK.O), ChargePoint (CHPT.N) and Tritium (DCFC.O) said they will offer chargers with Tesla's connector. The White House aims to spur deployment of hundreds of thousands of chargers, which it sees as integral to EV adoption. SK Signet will continue to provide customers with the option of other widely used standards for EV charger connections, including the CCS, CHAdeMO and the Megawatt Charging System.

June 15 (Reuters) - Software firm Oracle (ORCL.N) on Thursday laid off hundreds of employees, rescinded job offers and cut back open positions within its health unit, the Insider reported, citing three people familiar with the matter. The layoffs follow thousands of cuts in corporate America as companies wrestle with elevated levels of inflation and rising interest rates. Oracle's health unit includes electronic medical records firm Cerner which it acquired for $28.3 billion, its biggest ever deal, in December last year. The layoffs were largely due to Cerner's challenged work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which hired Cerner to replace its homemade medical records with Cerner's technology, the report said. During the streak, Tesla shares rose by more than 40%, boosting its market value to roughly $814 billion. The rally was kicked off by news of the adoption of Tesla's charging system by legacy U.S. automakers Ford (F.N) and General Motors (GM.N). Wedbush compared Tesla's share gains to Amazon, which for years defied many investor expectations that its stock would eventually fall. Tesla shares slumped in 2022, losing 65% of their value, and helping the shorts make a mint. The 13-day rally cost short sellers more than $7 billion in mark-to-market losses, taking year-to-date losses to nearly $12.7 billion, according to S3 Partners.

June 14 (Reuters) - Charles Schwab (SCHW.N) expects its second-quarter revenue to drop by 10% to 11% due to a contraction in its net interest margin and softer trading activity, the brokerage firm said on Wednesday. The majority of these borrowings could be repaid before the end of 2024, Schwab said. Analysts have warned of a compression in net interest margins for financial firms, as the Fed's rate hikes drain excessive liquidity. Further increases in interest rates could add to pressure on Schwab's earnings, William Blair analysts Jeff Schmitt and Tyler Mulier wrote in a note. Fed policymakers on Wednesday left interest rates steady but signaled they would rise by half a percentage point by the end of the year.

June 14 (Reuters) - TrueCar (TRUE.O) said on Wednesday it was laying off 24% of its workforce as part of restructuring that would result in $20 million of annualized expense reduction for the automotive digital marketplace. As of May 31, the company had nearly $146.5 million of cash and cash equivalents, but its management was expecting aggregate cash balance to drop below $125 million in the near term. However, TrueCar said the fourth quarter will see double-digit year-over-year revenue growth and breakeven or positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA). A stormy economic environment brought on by inflation and rate hikes has prompted several companies across corporate America to trim their headcount. June 6 (Reuters) - Novocure Ltd's <NVCR.O> experimental device to treat a type of lung cancer helped in extending overall survival among patients in a late-stage study, but concerns around its commercial success sent the medical device maker's shares down more than 34% on Tuesday.
