Giving Thanks When the World is on Fire

I am thankful that my children have never felt the pain of burying a beloved sibling. Thankful that if we needed a hospital, it would have electricity and sterile equipment and supplies like anesthesia available. Thankful that my children are alive. But also sad and angry that we live in a world where these things are blessings to be counted, and where so many cannot do so. I want to hear about things you have read (or watched or listened to) that have had the biggest impact on you this year.

Minnesota Nice: The History of ‘Fargo’
  + stars: | 2023-11-21 | by ( Brian Tallerico | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The Emmy-winning FX limited series “Fargo” returns Tuesday with a new season, its fifth, that stars Juno Temple and Jon Hamm and goes back to the basics: Minnesota cops, North Dakota bad guys and plenty of snow-covered landscapes. Created by Noah Hawley in 2014, “Fargo” is named after the Oscar-winning ’90s film by Joel and Ethan Coen and often repeats that film’s character archetypes: kind but determined police officers that echo Frances McDormand’s Marge Gunderson; greedy, conniving husbands like William H. Macy’s Jerry Lundegaard; and bumbling bad guys à la those played in the original film by Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare. But the series takes as its inspiration the whole of the Coenverse, referencing and remixing characters, themes and aesthetics from films like “Raising Arizona,” “Miller’s Crossing” and “No Country for Old Men” — as well as “Fargo,” of course — in original stories the tend to center on the evil deeds of stupid men. It has been three years since the last season of “Fargo.” With the new one about to premiere and the other four available on Hulu, here is a look at the who, what, where and you betcha of “Fargo,” season by season.

Social media’s antisemitism problemThe rise in antisemitism since the outbreak of war in the Middle East has ignited a clash between Wall Street donors and universities, and divided some workplaces. Now, the pressure is building on social media platforms, particularly Elon Musk’s X and TikTok, with advertisers, celebrities and influencers pulling spending and confronting executives about the proliferation of hate speech. He posted to X his support for white nationalist conspiracy theories that Jewish communities were spreading hatred. Yaccarino was brought in to win back advertisers after Musk bought Twitter last year and culled many content moderators. Gap's closet cleanup begins to pay off

Shares in the U.S. apparel company leapt over 30% on Friday morning, a day after it unveiled third-quarter results. That reaction looks overdone, considering how overall net sales of $3.8 billion are still down 7% compared to last year, and earnings fell year-on-year. Same-store sales at sub-brand Old Navy for the quarter were up 1% year-on-year, the first quarterly increase in over two years. The company might even use that tailwind to revive its scrapped plans to separate Old Navy into a stand-alone company.

Word "Oil" and stock graph are seen through magnifier displayed in this illustration taken September 4, 2022. That drop, which takes annual producer price inflation as low as 1.3%, was driven largely by falling gasoline prices. And that meets news that China's oil refinery throughput fell back in October as industrial fuel demand weakened. The overall energy and inflation picture is helping buoy consumption and stokes the 'soft landing' narrative investors are betting on. The picture in overseas markets, where the economic picture is cloudier, was more mixed.
