Opinion Meet the Flip-Flop Club: 7 Republicans Who Kissed the RingClaire Merchlinsky/The New York Times; Images by Mary981, via Getty ImagesYou could call it a glorious moment of party unity. Either way, the Republican Party’s nominating convention was an impressive show of force by its undisputed leader, Donald Trump, who has vanquished all comers to rally his party around the MAGA flag. Heading into the primary elections, plenty of Republicans were desperately casting about for a Trump alternative, and plenty of challengers were auditioning for the position. But you can’t fight the base, and as it became clear that Republican voters were going to stick with Mr. Trump, his skeptics and critics fell into line one by one. is Mr. Trump’s party, now more than ever.

The Republican convention, which provided a portfolio of memorable (or at least memeable) images, was borne on a typhoon of words. But politics doesn’t speak only the language of policy and platitude. AgainWhen the MAGA movement was born during the 2016 campaign, it was possible to wonder about the specific meaning of the last word. When had America been great, or not been great or stopped being great? On the last night, the original formula was tweaked to “Make America Great Once Again,” which doesn’t yield an easily pronounceable acronym (MAGOA?)

No one has ever said that Donald Trump doesn’t know a good story when he hears one. Trump is a master of narrative. Not always true narrative, and not always rational narrative. (Barron, who was very upset by what happened to his father, according to Trump aides, was nowhere to be seen.) “I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” Trump told the crowd at Fiserv Forum, after walking out on a stage with a campy giant “TRUMP” in blazing white lights and a display of the White House portico.

Read previewA draft budget approved by Germany's government shows the country is planning to halve its military aid to Ukraine next year. The draft budget slashes the amount promised to Ukraine to $4.35 billion in 2025, compared to the roughly $8.14 billion it is receiving this year, Reuters reported. There are fears that Trump will scale back or even totally halt US aid to Ukraine. Germany is the second-biggest donor country by volume of military aid to Ukraine and is Europe's biggest economy. As such, the draft budget is a "moral hazard" for the country, Loss said.

Unity, after all, has been a key message espoused by President Joe Biden. But there’s a small, powerful sect of Silicon Valley billionaires who are carving a path for the maybe-Trumpers and the MAGA-curious in the tech world. David Sacks, the billionaire tech investor, co-hosted a fundraiser last month at his San Francisco home and spoke at the Republican National Convention on Monday. In the last election cycle, the few Trump backers that existed in the Valley largely kept their support under the radar. Their numbers are still small, but they’re no longer hiding, and their wallets are open. Vance, the newly nominated vice-presidential candidate, may represent the new generation of the MAGA movement. But, as became clear Wednesday night when Usha Vance stepped gingerly into the spotlight to introduce her husband at the Republican convention, his wife represents change of a different kind. It’s because she does not hew to the very specific mold of femininity that has become the norm in the world of Trump. It calls to mind a cross between a Miss America — or Miss Universe — pageant contestant and a Fox newscaster. It is the equivalent of the Palm Beach billionaire take on the trad wife (even if these wives also have work).

Vance’s Republican National Convention speech capped a night Republicans spent prosecuting what they see as President Joe Biden’s biggest foreign policy failures and their consequences. Republicans used Wednesday night to introduce Vance and his life story to the nation. You owe President Trump answers!” Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn shouted at Cheatle, who continued to walk with her head down and ignore the senators’ criticism. Energy security and energy policy are in the governor’s comfort zone and that was on full display Wednesday night. Read previewSen. JD Vance of Ohio on Wednesday railed against decades of American policy in his major national moment as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Like former President Donald Trump, Vance underlined a populist Republican Party to the point that he came out to a Merle Haggard hit that was written in protest of the war in Iraq. In selecting Vance, Trump eschewed the traditional considerations in finding a running mate. "He chose to endure abuse, slander, and persecution, and he did it because he loves this country," Vance said. Vance did his initial walk-through of the Republican National Convention stage this week after he was named Donald J. Trump’s running mate, the Ohio senator was joined not just by aides and event organizers. He was accompanied by a man who had pushed behind the scenes as hard as almost anyone to put him on the ticket in the first place: Donald Trump Jr. When they each deliver a prime-time address on Wednesday night, the moment will mark not only Mr. Vance’s national debut but the unquestioned arrival of Donald Trump Jr. as a political force to be reckoned with in his own right. The younger Mr. Trump is now the rarest of political creatures: a top confidant not only to the Republican presidential nominee but also the vice-presidential nominee. Soon after Mr. Vance got the call from the former president that he would be on the ticket, one of the first outbound calls he made was to the younger Mr. Trump to thank him for his help, according to a person with knowledge of the call.

“It’s very clear that Trump wants someone who can carry the movement on,” a person close to Trump told CNN said of the Vance selection. The two became close friends, a relationship that helped Vance earn Trump’s endorsement in a contested primary for an open Ohio Senate seat. As a senator, Vance quickly won over the thought leaders of Trump’s populist movement. Vance and Trump Jr. embraced on the convention stage Tuesday afternoon as they prepared for their moments in the spotlight. Challenges certainly remain for Vance to maintain his position as next in line to the throne in Trump’s party.

To the Editor:Re “The Deep Source of Trump’s Appeal,” by David Brooks (column, July 12):I’ve always believed that the mass of Donald Trump supporters were fundamentally just working-class Americans who, as the country’s wealth increasingly skewed to the 1 percent ever since President Ronald Reagan, found themselves running faster and faster to stay in the same place, and finally (and justifiably) started to fume about it. While Mr. Brooks doesn’t flat out say it, I take away from his article that, rather than viewing their plight as old-fashioned liberals used to — as plain and simple economic class exploitation — the white working class has been conned by demagogues like Mr. Trump into seeing it as existential, zero-sum identity politics. If Mr. Brooks’s suggestion is that religious leaders guide Americans back to some form of enlightened democratic civility, they’re going to have to drop a bit more wealth redistribution into their message to the congregation. Steven DoloffNew YorkTo the Editor:It was only a matter of time before the voters who have become MAGA nation — having been dismissed as “deplorables,” sniffed at as people who “cling to guns or religion,” and generally considered less worthy — would decide to stand up for themselves and say, “We matter, too, and as much as you do.”
