CNN —A judge has proposed that Spain’s former soccer boss, Luis Rubiales, should stand trial for giving an unwanted kiss to star forward Jennifer Hermoso after the national team’s 2023 Women’s World Cup victory, the National Court press office in Madrid said in statement Thursday. Rubiales had described the kiss as “mutual” – a claim Hermoso has denied, saying she did not consent and was not respected. Rubiales resigned as RFEF president last September following weeks of pressure and now faces potential prosecution over his alleged actions. After that, the judge could issue an order to send the case for trial, which – if it occurs – would be held before a panel of three other judges at the National Court, the court spokesperson added. Hermoso was the last to testify in the investigation phase, appearing before the judge last January 2.

MADRID (AP) — After sullying his nation's Women's World Cup victory, former Spanish soccer president Luis Rubiales will face trial for kissing forward Jenni Hermoso without her consent at the final. State prosecutors accused Rubiales of sexual assault and for allegedly trying to coerce Hermoso to publicly support him in the public backlash against him. The new law eliminated the difference between “sexual harassment” and “sexual assault,” sanctioning any unconsented sexual act. The 46-year-old Rubiales, who also grabbed his crotch in a lewd victory gesture near to Spain’s Queen Letizia and Princess Sofia during the celebrations of Spain’s victory, immediately became a national embarrassment. FIFA banned Rubiales for three years until after the men’s 2026 World Cup.

By Sergio Goncalves and Miguel PereiraLISBON (Reuters) - Thousands of off-duty police officers in plain clothes on Wednesday protested in Lisbon for better wages, demanding the same increases in hazard pay that the outgoing government recently granted to the criminal investigation police (PJ). In late November, after Prime Minister Antonio Costa's resignation but while he still had full powers to make long-term decisions, the government approved hazard pay rises for the PJ that can reach almost 700 euros ($763) per month and are retroactive to January 2023. He added that members of the PSP and the GNR had "practically the same competences as those of the PJ". Police union association ASPP said on Tuesday that the average hazard pay in the PSP was currently between 380 and 420 euros per month, while in the PJ it has reached 1,000 euros. Read previewFive minutes a day might be all it takes to add healthy years to your life, according to a longevity specialist. You can link existing habits to healthy changes like a quick exercise session, a moment of deep breathing, and more. One technique is a simple exercise of focusing on your breath as you inhale for a count of four, hold for a count of seven, and exhale for a count of eight. Research suggests that gratitude not only improves mental health, but can also protect your physical health through factors like reducing blood pressure. "This can be a really powerful framework to not only add more years to your life, but more life to your years."

(AP) — A federal appeals court has ordered the appointment of an independent examiner in the bankruptcy case of FTX amid concerns about widespread fraud preceding the collapse of the multibillion-dollar cryptocurrency exchange. A three-judge panel in Philadelphia issued the ruling Friday in an appeal filed by the U.S. bankruptcy trustee, who serves as a government watchdog in Chapter 11 reorganizations. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge John Dorsey denied the trustee’s request last February. The appeals court reversed Dorsey’s ruling, agreeing with the trustee that the bankruptcy code mandates the appointment of an examiner. “Such is the case here.”Restrepo also noted that an examiner is required to make his or her findings public, whereas a debtor or creditors committee conducting an internal investigation has no such obligation.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico wants an urgent investigation into how U.S. military-grade weapons are increasingly being found in the hands of Mexican drug cartels, Mexico's top diplomat said Monday. Mexico’s army is finding belt-fed machine guns, rocket launchers and grenades that are not sold for civilian use in the United States. “The (Mexican) Defense Department has warned the United States about weapons entering Mexico that are for the exclusive use of the U.S. army,” Foreign Relations Secretary Alicia Bárcena said. While the Mexican army and marines still have superior firepower, the drug cartels' weaponry often now outclasses other branches of Mexican law enforcement. Mexico argued the companies knew weapons were being sold to traffickers who smuggled them into Mexico and decided to cash in on that market.

Read previewThe push by US businesses to make more stuff in America has an ongoing challenge: It's hard to find workers. Ulbrich says this stands in sharp contrast to Mexico, whose growing manufacturing base could entice companies to make supply chain investments there, rather than in the US. Even as the pandemic-era labor shortage has eased, the demand for construction and factory workers has continued to exceed supply. Mexico's median age is roughly 30, he added — compared to nearly 40 in China — which has contributed to a strong labor supply. Compared to Mexico, manufacturing in the US would likely offer businesses reduced supply chain disruptions and lower transportation costs.

Luis Alvarez | Digitalvision | Getty ImagesWhile rent payments do not traditionally affect your credit, a growing number of so-called rent-reporting services are trying to change that. But these services don't all operate the same way, and some may have less value for renters. There are also services geared to landlords that offer rent reporting for tenants, including ClearNow, Esusu and PayYourRent. Landlords usually shoulder the cost of these programs, but there may be processing fees depending on how you make your rent payments. When rent payments are included in credit reports, consumers see an average increase of nearly 60 points to their credit score, according to a 2021 TransUnion report.

(Reuters) - A large blaze at a garbage dump outside Panama City blew a toxic smoke in the country's capital on Friday, forcing evacuations as firefighters battled to put out the flames that authorities said were likely caused by arson the night before. "Everything points to the fire being started deliberately," firefighter chief Ernesto de Leon told a press conference. Health Minister Luis Francisco Sucre told reporters evacuations were being effected to protect residents from the flames and toxic gases. Videos on social media showed a helicopter flying above the thick gray smoke spraying down water as birds scatter overhead. Since 6 a.m. some 7,360 gallons (around 28,000 liters) of water have been sprayed over the area, authorities told reporters, saying some 60% of the blaze was controlled and this could reach 90% by Saturday.

Now, tax professionals are flagging a potential wrinkle that may arise: Even though bitcoin itself isn't subject to the wash sale rule, a spot bitcoin ETF very well may be. Property versus security Under federal tax law, the IRS deems cryptocurrency to be property . Managing limitations At its core, that means investors should avoid swapping in and out of the same spot bitcoin ETF within the 61-day limit if they had sold the position. This also raises the question of whether dumping one spot bitcoin ETF for another would be deemed substantially identical.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. Smart, then 19, disappeared from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo on the state’s scenic Central Coast over Memorial Day weekend in 1996. Those students said Flores had stalked and harassed them in the months leading up to Smart's disappearance. The family only realized Cal Poly's alleged negligence after that apology because relatives didn't have any access to the university's investigative file, according to the lawsuit.
