Southwest Airlines said Tuesday that it will have to trim its capacity plans and reevaluate its financial forecasts for the year, citing delivery delays from Boeing , its sole supplier of airplanes. The Dallas-based airline said Boeing informed Southwest's leaders that it should expect 46 Boeing 737 Max 8 planes this year, down from 58. Southwest had expected Boeing to deliver 79 Max planes, including some of the smallest model, the Max 7, which hasn't yet won certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. Because of the delays, Southwest said in a filing that it is "reevaluating all prior full year 2024 guidance, including the expectation for capital spending." Last week, United told staff that it would have to pause pilot hiring this spring because of late-arriving aircraft from Boeing, CNBC reported.

I recently took a day flight from New York to London to see if it helps jet lag. However, until last week, I had exclusively taken overnight flights — known as red-eye flights — when flying eastbound across the Atlantic. They depart in the morning in the US and land in the evening on the same day in Europe. Curious about how the daytime flight compared to a red-eye, I specifically booked a morning departure for my recent trip from New York to London. Because I was up at 4 a.m. in New York to catch the morning flight, I figured I'd be tired enough to sleep.

Christmas said it’s impossible to talk about weight gain around menopause without talking about the other elephant in the room: aging. Many women gain weight around menopause. And there’s at least one more factor that contributes to weight gain as we age.

Key takeaways from the latest jobs report

“The economy remains strong, held up by a robust labor market,” wrote Christopher Rupkey, chief economist with FwdBonds, in a note Friday. Still, Friday’s jobs report also showed that the whopping gains initially recorded for January and December were revised down by a combined 167,000 jobs. January’s job gains now sit at an estimated 229,000 (down from the blowout 353,000); and December’s job growth at 290,000 (down from 333,000). In February, that included construction (up 23,000 jobs); transportation and warehousing (up 19,700 jobs); and retail (up 18,700 jobs). Friday’s jobs report showed that wage growth is indeed slowing.

United Airlines is planning to launch flights to Marrakesh, Morocco, and Medellin, Colombia, and ramp up its service to Asia, in the carrier's latest bet that consumers will continue to shell out for trips abroad. The flights from United's Newark, New Jersey, hub to Marrakesh are scheduled to begin Oct. 24 using a Boeing 767-300ER. The airline is also starting year-round service to Cebu, Philippines, from Tokyo's Narita Airport. U.S. airlines have increased their international service coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic, and revenue growth from trips abroad has outpaced domestic sales. United also said it will offer four weekly flights between Shanghai and Los Angeles starting Aug. 29.

What to expect in Friday’s jobs report
  + stars: | 2024-03-07 | by ( Alicia Wallace | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
New York CNN —Don’t be surprised if Friday’s jobs report shows that February’s employment gains were far below those reported for January. In fact, it would continue a history-making stretch of labor market expansion. Friday’s jobs report could very well provide a more reliable read on what’s actually happening in the labor market than the jobs reports of recent months’ past, Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, told CNN. “And so, February might give us a better understanding of the underlying rate of job growth,” she said. What the other labor market data is showingOther economic data released this week reinforces the idea that the US labor market is cooling but remains on solid footing.

Private sector job growth improved during February though growth was slightly less than expected, payrolls processing firm ADP reported Wednesday. Companies added 140,000 positions for the month, an increase from the upwardly revised 111,000 in January but a bit below the Dow Jones estimate for 150,000. Other industries showing solid gains included trade, transportation and utilities (24,000), finance (17,000) and the other services category (14,000). Of the total, 110,000 came from the services sector while goods producers added 30,000. In recent months, ADP has consistently undershot the closely watched report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which showed an increase of 353,000 in January, more than triple the ADP estimate.

China's GDP target of 5% for 2024 is possible, but it won't be easy to achieve, Hong Kong's financial secretary told CNBC Tuesday after Beijing set a growth target of "around 5%" for this year. I think this is attainable, although it's not easy," Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Paul Chan told CNBC's Emily Chan, highlighting bright spots in China's export sector and domestic consumption. So this represents also a huge market for China's export," Chan said, adding that "we expect the export situation of the mainland will improve particularly into developing Asia." Domestic consumption is also a key driver for the city's growth in the short term, said the financial secretary. Hong Kong's GDP is projected to grow 2.5% to 3.5% this year.

But the people driving the post-pandemic decline in hours worked fall into four categories: women, young adults, highly paid workers and employees at small businesses. Richardson points out that high earners can maintain their annual income while working fewer hours, thanks to big post-pandemic pay increases. Women are working more part-time jobs than menA record number of Americans — 22 million — are working part-time, Labor Department figures show. In 2019, women worked 4.4 hours less per week than men, who worked 40 hours. The industries that saw bigger declines in hours worked — health care, leisure and hospitality — are dominated by women.

Last year, China was surpassed by India as the world’s most populous country. And while some women stop working entirely while raising their children, it makes returning to the workforce incredibly difficult. Women who have children may see a 12% to 17% drop in their wages, the report said, citing research from multiple papers. “Because the current social environment in China is not conducive to women’s childbirth, the time cost and opportunity cost for women to have children are too high,” the report said. The report warned that the falling birthrate could deeply impact economic growth, people’s overall happiness and China’s global standing.

America has gone from a pandemic crash and recession fears to stocks at record highs and an economic boom. Lockdowns, wars, shortages, inflation, interest rates, day trading, and AI have all played a role. Noam Galai/SOPA/Getty ImagesMany Americans also socked away money during the pandemic, as they saved on expenses like travel and live entertainment. Stimulus-fueled demand, combined with pandemic and war-related supply disruptions, caused inflation to spike to a 40-year high of 9.1% in June that year. The Fed swiftly raised interest rates to rein in the price growth, lifting them from virtually zero to upward of 5% in under 18 months, and hasn't touched them since.
