Pinpointing exactly who sends a cryptocurrency payment can be complicated by the relative anonymity that some crypto services offer. The ransom payment of $25 million hasn’t been previously reported. A $25 million ransom payment is certainly large but not unheard of in the lucrative ransomware economy. UnitedHealth Group, the health care conglomerate whose subsidiary suffered a ransomware attack in February that hobbled pharmacies across the US, paid a $22 million ransom to a different criminal group. But the average ransom payment in the fourth quarter of 2023 was significantly lower: $568,705, according to cybersecurity firm Coveware.

Gold prices firmed for a third consecutive session on Thursday, with investors awaiting U.S. inflation data due later in the day for more insights on the Federal Reserve's interest rate path. Any downside surprise in the CPI report could weaken the dollar and push up gold prices to the $2,400 level, said Marex analyst Edward Meir. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said on Wednesday that the U.S. central bank would make interest rate decisions "when and as" they were needed. Spot silver climbed 0.7% to $31.04 per ounce, platinum firmed 0.4% to $993.25 and palladium gained 0.7% to $992.90.

But leaning into the microphone and whispering to dramatize his defiance, Mr. Biden made clear that he did not foresee this happening. “No poll says that.”He seemed to open the door to an alternative, then swiftly shut it. Sure, “other people can beat Trump,” he said, but it would be too hard to “start from scratch.”The president’s first news conference since the debate amounted to a competent presentation, if not a compelling performance. But it remained in doubt whether it was enough to stop the bleeding of Democratic support that has threatened to hemorrhage. Minutes after he left the stage, the drip-drip-drip of Democratic members of Congress calling for him to step aside continued unabated.

A co-defendant in the case, Kristina Puzyreva, pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to launder the proceeds of the export scheme, prosecutors said, and she now awaits sentencing. Authorities seized around $1.68 million dollars in connection with the scheme, prosecutors say. The components the trio sourced have been found in seized Russian weapons that included guided missiles, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and battle tanks, with some of the components needed for Russia’s precision-guided weapons systems being used against Ukraine, according to prosecutors. “The defendants were aware of the potential military applications of the electronics that they exported to Russia,” prosecutors said in the release. “Goltsev responded, ‘happy holiday to you too my friend, we are defending it in the way that we can [smile emoji].’”CNN’s Devan Cole contributed to this report.

In today's big story, we're looking at why pricing is so weird these days . More recently, Walmart introduced digital price tags, which some people said could be used for variable pricing. The constantly changing costs have consumers feeling a sense of price fatigue, Emily writes. Emily writes that most economists agree that government-mandated price-fixing isn't the way to go about it. So, as Emily writes, you can't fault anyone for feeling a certain sense of doom and gloom about the economy.

You get to take time to enjoy the kind of inspiration that being alone in a giant kitchen full of your tools and favorite recipes might bring. On those mornings, I would use my early arrival as a chance to thumb through my cookbooks. Some of these books were by renowned pastry chefs, but a majority were castoffs from rummage sales and “free” bins at the library. They were full of recipes that people once exchanged verbally before eventually typing them up and binding them with plastic spirals. In these volumes, I found inspiration and personal stories — and often scrap papers with handwritten recipes tucked among the pages.

U.S. stock futures were little changed Wednesday night after both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed at new all-time highs. Futures tied to the broad market index slipped less than 0.1%, as did Nasdaq 100 futures . These moves come before a key inflation report due to be released Thursday morning, which could help solidify expectations for a rate cut in September. "Any upside surprises in inflation are going to be downside surprises for markets.

There are other reasons the dollar has been propelled higher as some European and Asian currencies have seen lackluster growth. A strong dollar makes US exports more expensive and reduces the profits of American companies operating overseas when earnings are converted back to dollars. And while a strong dollar lowers the cost of imported raw materials, it can boost inflation and hurt foreign investments.
