New York CNN —For those that can’t get enough of espresso martinis, there’s now a gift that smells like the iconic cocktail that’s experiencing a resurgence for its 40th birthday. Absolut Vodka and Kahlúa coffee liqueur, two spirits that are often mixed to create an espresso martini, are releasing a $105 fragrance called “Blend No. The espresso martini is a mix of vodka, coffee liqueur and espresso. The rise of espresso martinis has made the 87-year-old brand more appealing to younger drinkers, according to Rima Sawaya, Kahlúa’s brand director. “The elegance of the espresso martini elevates your cocktail experience at a bar or restaurant, and it also serves as an impressive after-dinner cocktail when entertaining guests at home.”

Heinz’s newest ketchup tastes like pickles
  + stars: | 2023-11-06 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Ketchup and pickles have been a natural combination on a hamburger and hot dogs for decades. Rolling out to grocery store shelves in early 2024, Heinz’s newest flavor of its famous ketchup is called “Pickle Ketchup,” which combines the “tangy and savory flavor” of pickles with the “unmistakable taste” of its ketchup. Heinz’s purple ketchup experiment in 2000 has its own entry in the Museum of Failure. The pickle taste is also subtle enough to combine with others, making it an appealing flavor to experiment with. Through 2027, Kraft Heinz has a goal of bringing in an additional $2 billion in North American retail revenue from innovation.

New York CNN —Martinis and margaritas might still be people’s drink of choice, but the spritz is bubbling to the top. Bartenders are experimenting so much with the spritz, swapping in different liqueurs or juices in place of Campari or Aperol, that it’s becoming the “cocktail for the moment” and expanding its appeal year-round, a recent report from bar analytics service Union said. “By all accounts, the spritz has had a smashing year, showing strong growth across every month, peaking smack-dab in the middle of summer,” Union said. Data shows that spritz sales started growing in sales this year a month earlier — in April — than usual. Just scrolling on TikTok, Rosenstein notices different variations of a spritz (such as a Hugo spritz, made with St-Germain elderflower liqueur, or a Lillet spritz made with the wine-based liqueur) in her feed.

New York CNN —Sam Bankman-Fried was found guilty Thursday following a monthlong trial that was almost as wild as the rapid rise and fall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX itself. He was found guilty of stealing billions of dollars from accounts belonging to customers of FTX. CNN —Charles Schwab has laid off about 5% to 6% of its employees, amounting to roughly 2,000 people, as it looks to cut costs. “They are decisions that impact very talented people personally, and we take that very seriously,” a spokesperson said. Part of the changes includes evaluating its “real estate footprint, streamlining our operating model, and staffing reductions, largely in non-client-facing areas,” a Schwab spokesperson said. Like other banks, Schwab endured turbulence earlier this year when its bottom line was given a hard look by investors after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Shares of Schwab (SCHW) are down 35% for the year, and up 1% in early afternoon trading.

The New York City-based dessert maker is transforming some of its famous treats into THC-infused edibles, including its banana pudding and red velvet cake. The limited-edition bars, which mark Magnolia’s first-ever cannabis product, “celebrate the brand’s most iconic, fan-favorite flavors in a new light,” the bakery said. That has created consumer interest in weed, including edibles, with the stigma of buying the drug dissipating. Perhaps once known for being just “pot brownies,” the edible market has blossomed into several categories and hundreds of brands, including gummies, mints and candy bars. “There is no real downside to Magnolia, as consumer opinions on cannabis are now relativity liberal,” he told CNN.

New York CNN —Bud Light continues to drag Anheuser-Busch InBev’s bottom line in the United States, but the world’s biggest brewer’s sales rose because of higher prices. The company reported a 13.5% decline in third-quarter US revenue per 100 liters, a key measure of beer sales, as an ongoing backlash to Bud Light continues. The brand’s customers turned their backs on Bud Light after the company partnered with a transgender influencer – and then muddled its response. Tuesday’s report painted a bleak picture for Bud Light, sales and shipments of which have weakened dramatically since its brief and limited partnership with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney in the spring. The letter, which called for universities to “investigate” individual chapters of SJP, provided no evidence to indicate that SJP had provided material or financial support for Hamas. In a response, SJP directed CNN to a letter Palestine Legal sent to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday. Citing similar opposition to DeSantis’ call for state universities to “deactivate” SJP chapters because of their “material support for terrorism,” the national SJP chapter disputed the organization and its local chapters support terror groups. “Independent protests and organizing in support of Palestinian rights do not constitute ‘material support for terrorism,’” the pro-Palestine legal defense group said in its letter to DeSantis. The McFlurry spoon, which sparked confusion among its fans for being hollow, is being phased out as the fast food chain says it seeks more sustainable alternatives. The clear plastic spoon doubled as a spindle, with the utensil being inserted into the McFlurry machine to mix in the toppings into the ice cream. The company explained that the “small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste” without altering how the McFlurry tastes. The McFlurry spoon is the latest thing to go at McDonald’s, with the chain recently announcing that self-serve soda machines will be eliminated by 2032.

Alaska has created a custom blend with Portland-based roaster Stumptown to make a coffee that’s immune from the altitude-changing effects that airborne-served coffee typically creates, including tasting bitter and weak. The custom coffee, a first for a major airline, will exclusively be served on every Alaska flight, including its regional carrier Horizon Air, by December 1. Taste and smell are inextricably combined and people’s sense of smell is significantly altered in the sky. Alaska even taste-tested the blend with creamer and Biscoff cookies to “ensure the best combination.”However, the freshly brewed partnership with Stumptown means that Alaska is ending its decade-long partnership with fellow Seattle-based coffee company, Starbucks. Other regional companies served on Alaska include Tillamook cheeses, Salt & Straw ice cream and Straightaway canned cocktails.

Chipotle is raising prices again

Chipotle has been raising its prices over the past few years, citing higher costs. In June of 2021, Chipotle said it was raising prices about 3.5% to 4%. So far at Chipotle, the increased prices haven’t scared people off — clearing the way for more expensive burritos. Even companies that have seen customers pull back due to the higher prices reported higher sales, because those higher prices offset volume declines. The snack and beverage company said it increased prices globally by 11% on average, helping nudge revenue higher than analysts’ expectations.
