Best High-Yield Savings Accounts of September 2023
  + stars: | 2023-08-31 | by ( Martha C. White | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +18 min
With the Federal Reserve steadily raising interest rates to fight inflation, high-yield savings account payouts have steadily risen, too. After years of near-zero returns, the average savings account rate has risen to 0.43%, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Unlike some high-yield online savings accounts, you earn a high APY—currently 5%—on every dollar in your account. You can conduct immediate electronic transfers between your brokerage account and savings account, and manage both savings and investment activities on a single platform. How we pickedTo pick Buy Side from WSJ’s Best Savings Accounts, we looked for accounts that offered the best APY on deposited funds without restrictions.

How Kia pulled off a massive turnaround in the U.S.
  + stars: | 2023-08-31 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
When the automaker arrived in the U.S. in 1994, its cars were poorly reviewed, and it was seen mostly as a low-cost value brand. Now, Kia is winning awards and commanding higher markups than its peers. U.S. sales have gone from about 12,000 units in 1994 to almost 700,000 units in 2022. "We had a record in 2022," said Steve Center, chief operating officer of Kia America, adding that the first half of 2023 brought another sales record. But Kia believes it can take on electric as well as it took on internal combustion.

As car companies produce more EVs than ever, these cars are starting to pile up on dealer lots for the first time. AdvertisementAdvertisementOn average, electric cars were selling for around $2,000 over sticker price last year, according to Jessica Caldwell, an automotive analyst for Edmunds. AdvertisementAdvertisementOn average, EVs are still more expensive, on average, than gas-powered cars, with EVs going for about $53,469 in July, says Kelley Blue Book (down from $66,000 a year earlier ). And with help from new federal tax credits, leasing deals abound on electric cars . Even some of the more expensive EVs are dropping in price rapidly, too.

Maikel Garcia's run-scoring single and Drew Waters' RBI groundout got them within a run with the tying run on second. Yoan Moncada hit a two-run double that tied the game and Oscar Colas made it 7-5 with a two-run double during the seventh-inning uprising.

The Pittsburgh-based company formed in 1901 as a merger of the nation’s leading steel companies — including Carnegie Steel Corp. — and was engineered by financier J.P. Morgan. But, in recent years, US Steel’s fallen far below other American steel companies in steel output and stock market value. (Last year, US Steel shipped only 11.2 million tons of steel from its US operations and had just under 15,000 US employees.) That compares to 14.49 million metric tons from US Steel, including its operations in Europe, which rank 27th in the world for 2022, according to the World Steel Association. Bradford said all along the way, US Steel and other US integrated steelmaking rivals with storied names such as Bethlehem Steel, Inland Steel and LTV Steel underestimated the competitive challenge that they faced from overseas and mini-mills at home.

Vance on Thursday asked U.S. Steel (CLF.N) to rule out a foreign buyer, in a sign that the emerging bidding war for the iconic steel producer could run into political headwinds. Vance, a Republican, said potential U.S. buyers for the Pittsburgh-based company should have priority because domestic steel production is an important aspect of national security. "It appears to be political grandstanding from somebody out making a name for themselves more than any national security interest, said Spoores, principal analyst at CRU Group. Vance was elected to the Senate in 2022 after winning the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, a Republican who also pushed for greater domestic steel production.

CNN —A 6-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head this week by a 9-year-old boy who got a hold of a gun inside a Florida home, authorities said. The incident adds to the growing tally of children up to age 17 killed this year in gun violence: 1,114 as of Wednesday, with another 3,065 injured, Gun Violence Archive data shows. Nearly 3,600 children died in gun-related incidents that year – about 5 children lost for every 100,000 children in the United States. In this week’s fatal shooting in Florida, it’s unclear what the relationship between the two boys and their relationship with the adult at the home are. Authorities will not release that information per Marsy’s Law, a state statute that gives crime victims certain protections and rights.

In 17 career starts against the Brewers, Kershaw is 7-5 with a 2.97 ERA. Three Brewers pitchers saw action in the inning as the Dodgers sent 10 batters to the plate. After college, I got into the habit of just switching my car insurance to whichever policy was cheapest. But while I've never had difficulty filing a claim, I have had less favorable customer service experiences. Recently, I've compared prices and thought about switching providers to save money. The customer service is excellent, and we also get free roadside assistance, which I've already used once this year due to a faulty transmission. While finding ways to save money is always a top priority of mine, financial savings sometimes come with a different price: risk.

WASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) - Facing uphill re-election battles in 2024, vulnerable Senate Democrats are pushing legislation that promotes "Buy America" policies, attempting to bolster their party on a brand of economic populism they hope will keep them in the majority. The Senate Commerce Committee on Thursday advanced a bill from Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin and Republican Senator J.D. "There's definitely momentum," Senator Gary Peters, a Democrat from Michigan and chair of the Senate Democrats' campaign committee, citing the COVID-19 pandemic as a galvanizing force. Buy America policies are "mom-and-apple pie issues with American voters" that have "virtually universal support," Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, said. Buy America bills often run in to opposition from corporate-minded lawmakers and pro-business associations.

Electric trucks, long touted as a key to broader EV adoption, are a wildcard in the electric vehicle price war. Automakers are investing billions of dollars to electrify their product lineups not just for the average car buyer, but also for these fleet customers. "You're watching your numbers, you're watching your budget, you're watching the profit you're making." Still, automakers can't afford to jerk these buyers around with EV price changes. Smaller fleet customers are also very important for dealers, and electric trucks are a big gamble to sell to these customers, dealers who spoke with Insider said.
