According to Turkish media, there are more than 50 million users of the photo-sharing app in the country. Reports however suggest the ban was a response to the Meta -owned platform removing posts related to the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Iranian officials and Hamas blame Israel for what they say is an assassination, while Israel has declined to comment. Fahrettin Altun, head of Turkey's presidential communications and an aide to Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan, on Wednesday criticized Instagram, accusing it of censorship.

Job growth in the U.S. slowed much more than expected during July and the unemployment rate ticked higher, the Labor Department reported Friday. The unemployment rate edged higher to 4.3%, its highest since October 2021. "Temperatures might be hot around the country, but there's no summer heatwave for the job market," said Becky Frankiewicz, president of the Manpower Group employment agency. From a sector standpoint, health care again led in job creation, adding 55,000 to payrolls. The labor force also contracted by 214,000, though the participation rate as a share of the working-age population actually edged higher to 62.7%.

Headline inflation in the euro zone unexpectedly rose to 2.6% in June, the European Union's statistics agency said Wednesday. In June, inflation had come in at 2.5%, easing slightly from the 2.6% of May. Economists polled by Reuters had been expecting the headline figure for July to be unchanged from June's reading at 2.5%. Core inflation, which excludes more volatile energy, food, alcohol and tobacco prices, hit 2.9% in July, versus a Reuters estimate of 2.8%. The inflation rates come just a day after the release of the zone's second quarter gross domestic product, which the European Union's statistics office said grew 0.3% in the three months to the end of June.
