Finding a Moral Center in This Era of War

Talk Finding a Moral Center in This Era of WarPhil Klay, as both a participant and a writer, has been thinking deeply about war for a long time. “I’m interested in the kinds of stories that we tell ourselves about war,” says Klay, who is a 40-year-old veteran of the Iraq war. But has this moment changed anything fundamental in how we think about war? I think that Ukraine represents not a good war — because the closer you get to war, the more obvious it is that a phrase like “a good war” has no valid meaning — but rather a necessary war. Here is a war with a clear front line with a clear moral imperative.

TEL AVIV—Hamas leaders are heading into a temporary cease-fire with a singular mission: survival. Israel has defined its war aims as toppling Hamas from power, killing its leadership, freeing the more than 200 hostages in Gaza and ending any security threat from the strip. The four-day pause gives Hamas time to prepare a new phase of the war that could last months, with the aim of sapping the momentum of Israel’s offensive and creating international pressure to end the conflict without achieving its goals, military analysts said.

The Hostage Deal Means Israel Is Fighting the Clock

Wonder Land: Hamas knew that after Oct. 7 the narrative would shift to the isolation of Israel. Images: Zuma Press/AFP/Getty Images Composite: Mark KellyWith a four-day cease-fire reportedly going into effect Friday, time isn’t on Israel’s side in its war with Hamas in Gaza. Israeli society, already riven by political infighting, is traumatized by Hamas’s Oct. 7 assault and divided over how to handle the hostage crisis. Further cease-fires mean the recovery of more hostages, but this will slow and eventually halt Israel’s effort to break Hamas’s control over Gaza. That would be a strategic defeat for both Israel and the U.S.Israel needs time to root out Hamas.

A prominent doctor is suing NYU Langone Health after he was fired as director of its cancer center over his social media postings about the Israel-Hamas war. Dr. Neel is one of two doctors whom NYU Langone has removed for online postings since the war began last month. The lawsuit could put NYU Langone under the microscope in the widening debate. “They should take away their scholarships,” Dr. Grossman wrote in a message to Dr. Neel in October. In a statement, NYU Langone said Dr. Neel’s decision to share those emails was just him “lashing out for being held accountable.”“The emails referenced in the suit were among colleagues and Dr. Neel is now making them public in an effort to pressure NYU Langone,” the statement said.

Negotiators were racing Thursday to hash out the final details of a deal to free Israeli hostages held by Hamas and pause the war, after last-minute issues delayed an agreement weeks in the making. The handover of the first group of hostages, planned for Thursday, now won’t happen until Friday at the earliest, Israeli and regional officials said. Senior Egyptian officials blamed the setback on Hamas’s failure to hand over a complete list of the first group of hostages it planned to release.

Inside the secret negotiations: The agreement to release the hostages was sealed with help from President Biden and survived last-minute problems. Hostage families: Israel has contacted the families of those hostages to be released tomorrow and published guidelines explaining how hostage children should be handled by the Israeli soldiers who accompany them from captivity. Palestinian prisoners: The women and children who will be exchanged for Israeli hostages will be taken to the West Bank and Jerusalem. Behind the delay: The release of the first hostages was delayed by a day until Friday.

Israel’s military released footage with blurred faces that it says shows Hamas militants taking hostages into Al-Shifa Hospital on Oct. 7. WSJ spoke to friends and colleagues of captured Nepali student Bipin Joshi, whom they believe to be one of the men in the video. Photo: Scene from a video released by Israel Defense Forces/circle illustration by WSJThe footage held little more than a grainy flicker of a young man being bundled through the hallways of Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital by armed militants, but to friends and colleagues his identity seemed clear: It was Bipin. Nepali student Bipin Joshi, 23 years old, had last been seen on the morning of Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, dragged away by militants who had killed 10 of his countrymen in the southern Israeli kibbutz where they harvested oranges and lemons. Since then, a small number of Nepali diplomats, local volunteers and Bipin’s friends had been piecing together fragments of evidence to answer a basic question: Did he survive?

For years, the Binance founder Changpeng Zhao and other senior employees at the cryptocurrency exchange knew that some of its users were criminals. Yet, despite regular warnings from some of its own employees that some transactions on Binance.com were violating anti-money-laundering laws, the firm was reluctant to cut them off. Those allegations, which were made public on Tuesday in a sweeping federal case against Binance and Mr. Zhao, show how thoroughly he and his deputies understood that criminals were using their trading platform — and how little they did to stop them. Mr. Zhao and Binance pleaded guilty on Tuesday to violations of the Bank Secrecy Act and agreed to pay hefty fines. The Binance official acknowledged the report, then tried to persuade the tech company’s representatives to downplay Binance’s role in the transactions, according to the filing, which FinCEN posted on its website on Tuesday.

The Israeli government and Hamas agreed to uphold a brief cease-fire in Gaza to allow for the release of 50 hostages captured during Hamas’s assault last month on Israel and the release of 150 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, Qatar said early Wednesday. Israel and Hamas have been negotiating indirectly for weeks over the roughly 240 hostages taken to Gaza in the Hamas attacks on southern Israel. A brief cease-fire could allow Israel to achieve part of the latter objective before returning to the former. Mr. Netanyahu said earlier on Tuesday night that Israel’s campaign to prevent Hamas from controlling any part of Gaza would continue after the cease-fire. As part of its offensive against Hamas, Israel has cut off electricity to Gaza and blocked the delivery of most fuel, saying it could be diverted for the armed group’s use.

Biden vowed that he would not relent until all American hostages in Gaza were released. Biden had his own demand throughout the talks: Humanitarian assistance had to reach Gaza, regardless of a deal. Israel’s ground invasion plans were revised so fighting could be paused if a hostage deal came together. Talks resumed last Friday, and in another conversation with the Qatari emir, Biden told him it was the last shot at a hostage deal and he had to close it now. Officials also crafted a way to try to entice Hamas to release more hostages than the 50 already agreed to.

The deal, however, is hardly the stuff of unalloyed joy – for Palestinians or for Israel. And the deal arguably strengthens Hamas, allowing it to claim credit, catch its breath and regroup. But their voices were drowned by the strength of the hostages’ families. They simultaneously support the government’s aim of fighting Hamas so it can no longer threaten Israel. It’s a sign of a deep moral dilemma that will continue playing out in profound human suffering.

There have been five wars in the last 15 years between Israel and Hamas. The United States, the international community and Israel’s neighbors must move aggressively toward that goal. The only way these necessary changes will happen is if the United States uses the substantial leverage we have with Israel. For many years, the United States has provided Israel substantial sums of money — with close to no strings attached. Over the years, people of good will around the world, including Israelis, have tried to address this conflict in a way that brings justice for Palestinians and security for Israel.

There’s a lot of anxiety.”The Israeli government and Hamas announced Wednesday morning that they would uphold a brief cease-fire in Gaza to allow for the release of the hostages. “I’m trying to take care not to be happy too quickly,” Ms. Zailer said on Tuesday. His family in Israel still does not know where he and his brother are being held, whether they are with their parents — or even if they are still alive, Ms. Zailer said. “We are being torn apart,” Ms. Zailer said, calling it an impossible situation. At Kibbutz Nir Oz, 76 people were taken hostage on Oct. 7, according to Irit Lahav, a kibbutz spokeswoman.

Opinion | The ‘Cease-Fire Now’ Imposture

They give the lie to the “Cease-Fire Now” mirage, or imposture, that has become a rallying cry at pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Why should it matter that it was Hamas that broke the cease-fire when Palestinian civilians are being killed in large numbers by Israeli bombs and bullets? As I write, there are reports that Hamas might release some hostages in exchange for a brief cease-fire. What about for Palestinians — women, children and noncombatant men for whom the calls for a cease-fire are supposedly intended? There are good intentions, if also ignorance and shortsightedness, among many of those demanding a cease-fire.

Israeli officials did not think Hamas was serious about the offer and refused to delay the ground offensive. At the White House, Mr. Biden and his foreign policy team kept pressing. It took several days for the talks to resume, following a call from Mr. Biden to the emir of Qatar. It is important that all aspects of this deal be fully implemented.”But even with the deal in place, Mr. Biden faces challenges ahead. For Mr. Biden, it could not happen soon enough.

Democrats accuse X of profiting from Hamas propaganda

Washington CNN —A group of House Democrats has accused X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, of profiting from Hamas propaganda and misinformation about the Israel-Hamas war after reports by independent researchers found numerous accounts glorifying the US-sanctioned terror group. More than two dozen US lawmakers signed the letter dated Tuesday addressed to X owner Elon Musk and CEO Linda Yaccarino. Musk sued Media Matters on Monday, accusing it of distorting the likelihood that ads may be shown against extremist material. But some legal critics have cast doubt on the complaint, calling it “weak” and “bogus” in the face of the First Amendment. The letter calls for Yaccarino and Musk to answer by December 1 to allegations that X has amplified terrorist propaganda in violation of its own policies.

We understand the pain,” said Jason Straziuso, a spokesman for the Red Cross. It’s not possible.”The Red Cross has about 130 employees in Gaza, he said, giving it some ability to deliver humanitarian aid and to visit the scenes of destruction from the war. Mr. Straziuso said Red Cross officials were talking to Hamas, Israel, the United States and other nations about the condition of the hostages. Warring nations have blocked the Red Cross from visiting hostages or prisoners of war in previous conflicts. In 2022, eight months into the war between Ukraine and Russia, the Red Cross still had little access to prisoners held by either side.
