Why Is It So Darn Hot?
  + stars: | 2023-07-28 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It’s been hard to escape the feeling this summer that, after years of warnings, climate change is starting to make itself felt in everyday life: Floods, wildfires and deadly heat waves have all made headlines for months, and it looks as if July will be the hottest month ever recorded. In that sense Jeff Goodell’s book “The Heat Will Kill You First” — about the real-world costs and consequences of a warming planet — feels particularly urgent at the moment. On this week’s podcast, Goodell talks with Gilbert Cruz about air conditioning, urban heat traps and the effects of extreme heat on the human body, among other things. “I’ve been working on this book for four years,” Goodell says, “and for it to be out now. It sometimes feels like I’m living in my own Stephen King novel.

"Nonetheless, we continue to plan on all contingencies not merely any flashpoint between China and Taiwan, but any contingency within the theatre," he added. A priority for the Philippines is the safety of the more than 100,000 of its nationals living and working in Taiwan. Without providing specifics, Teodoro, said the contingency measures being discussed were "a multi-agency effort and not only a defence effort". The Philippines has granted access to four additional bases this year, some facing north towards Taiwan. "Hopefully, the engagements bilaterally between the United States and China leads to the diffusion of tensions in that theatre," said Teodoro.

When the police returned two days later, they found the remains of three other women — Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. They were all also found bound at the feet or ankles and wrapped in burlap along a stretch of sand about a quarter mile long. Seven other bodies would be found in the months that followed, including Ms. Gilbert, four other women, a man who was never identified and a 2-year-old girl. The bodies, two of which were only partial remains, had not been bound and wrapped as those in the first group were. But that dumping, he said, has generally been the work of an organized crime group or gang.

CNN —Authorities have received a flood of evidence and information related to the suspect charged in some of the Gilgo Beach killings since his arrest, the Suffolk County District Attorney told CNN on Monday. Authorities have had Heuermann on their radar for more than a year as investigators gathered enough evidence to make an arrest. The suspect’s wife and children are cooperating with the investigation, according to Carter. Authorities later said they believed Gilbert’s death may have been accidental and unrelated to the Gilgo Beach homicides. “We’re going to continue to work this case and work the entire Gilgo investigation,” Carter said.

Suffolk County Sheriff's Office/APHeuermann is charged with three counts of first-degree murder for the killings of Melissa Barthelemy in 2009, and Megan Waterman and Amber Costello the following year, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney. His father had built satellites for a living, Heuermann told the interviewer. They first connected him to the killings last year while conducting a review of evidence under a newly formed task force, which included the Suffolk County Police Department, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the New York State Police and the FBI. Speaking of the arrest, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said Friday: “Rex Heuermann is a demon that walks among us.

As the police scoured the beach for more bodies in the spring of 2010 (and found several), Ms. Cann and the family members of the other women were caught in a peculiar bind. Now that they were part of a serial-killer case, the world was beating a path to their doors; perhaps there might even be a break in the case. Then came the horrible hangover of seeing their daughters and sisters in the news, constantly being referred to as prostitutes. The point Ms. Cann made to me on that pier was similar to what all the family members eventually said to me: These women were more than this. “I don’t like how they’re talking about her,” Ms. Cann told me.

Heuermann has not been charged in the case, but the investigation “is expected to be resolved soon,” the document states. I can only imagine what you’ve had to endure over the last decade regarding knowing that your killer was still loose. “For each of the murders, he got an individual burner phone, and he used that to communicate with the victims. By mid-March, Heuermann’s name showed up on authorities’ radar after a New York state investigator identified him in a database, according to Tierney. The victims’ remains “were out in a tough environment for a prolonged period of time.

He was expected to be arraigned Friday after his arrest Thursday night in Manhattan, said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison. "We anticipate an indictment later on this afternoon," said Harrison, whose agency and the Suffolk County district attorney are leading the investigation. According to NBC New York, Gilbert was not the only victim who was a sex worker. In May 2022, Suffolk County police released 911 audio related to Gilbert's disappearance. The development comes after a multi-agency task force made up of FBI, New York State Police and Suffolk County authorities was established in February 2022 to "reinvigorate" the investigation.

“After hearing about this case for so many years, it’s a shock to find out that your neighbor is a serial killer and you never knew it,” a neighbor, Cheryl Lombardi, said. The killings terrorized residents for more than a decade as body after body was discovered in the remote area about 40 miles from Midtown. In all, remains of nine women, a man and a toddler were discovered in the area. She disappeared during an escort job in Oak Beach, a gated community three miles from Gilgo Beach. Ms. Gilbert’s remains were found in December 2011, but investigators have said they do not believe her death is linked to the serial killer.

Law enforcement arrive at a Long Island house Friday, July 14, 2023. Eduardo Munoz Alvarez/APAuthorities later said they believe Gilbert’s death may have been accidental and not related to the Gilgo Beach slayings. Additional remains were uncovered in neighboring Gilgo Beach and in Nassau County, about 40 miles east of New York City. MANILA, July 7 (Reuters) - The Philippine military on Friday reported an "alarming" increase in the number of Chinese fishing vessels in disputed waters in the South China Sea, which it said threatens the security of the oil and gas-rich Reed Bank. "China must cease its swarming of vessels to respect our sovereign rights," Ariel Coloma, spokesperson for the Western Command, said in a statement. The Philippines won a landmark arbitration case in 2016 that invalidated China's expansive claims in the South China Sea, where about $3 trillion worth of sea-borne goods pass every year. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told his Philippine counterpart, Gilbert Teodoro, on Thursday that the U.S. commitment to the defense of its ally was "ironclad," including in the South China Sea, according to a U.S. summary of the call. The Philippines on Wednesday accused the China Coast Guard of harassment, obstruction and "dangerous manoeuvres" against its vessels, after another incident near a strategic feature of the South China Sea.

The global nature of the climate crisis demands innovation that mobilizes international support. This article is part of "Gains in Green Tech," a series showcasing some of the most transformative solutions to the climate crisis. In essence, we need innovation across business models, products, and services to unlock solutions that are already available to us. It implies that we don't need to modify our lifestyles to tackle the climate crisis. Tackling the climate crisis requires plenty of innovation — perhaps not all of it shiny tech.

But reading “The Lottery” as a connect-the-dots political commentary misses the primary source of the story’s power: its ambiguity. Today, readers across the political spectrum seem to be losing their appetite for literary discomfort. I was reminded again of that quality in 2017 by a different story in The New Yorker. Just as the #MeToo movement was getting underway, “Cat Person,” a short story by Kristen Roupenian, went viral for very similar reasons. The reaction was not unlike the reaction to “The Lottery.” “People get angry when they can’t figure out what something means,” Ms. Roupenian told me.
