China’s latest war games around the island, carried out last week, included simulating blockading key ports and areas, and assaulting maritime and ground targets, Beijing said. “The international community could not sit by and just watch.”While those war games last only a day, Chinese military activity has continued. This screen grab from a video released by the Taiwan Coast Guard shows a China Coast Guard boat from a Taiwan Coast Guard boat as it passes near the coast of Matsu islands, Taiwan on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024. The Liaoning was involved in those same Chinese war games last week near Taiwan. Taiwan and the United States dispute that, saying the Taiwan Strait is an international waterway.

The family was shocked and disappointed by the coddling of kids when they returned to the US. She was featured in "The Danish Secret to Happy Kids," a new book that champions Nordic parenting. It was a complete 180 from our experience in Denmark, where the kids understood to be careful. The children set the table and helped themselves from a big dish in the middle. But we're grateful we had the chance to raise our children in Denmark — at least for a while.

Harris would be the first female president in American history and only the second nonwhite one. “My challenge is the challenge of making sure I can talk with and listen to as many voters as possible and earn their vote. On abortion rights, Harris said she is not interested in finding a potential compromise with Republicans to restore some abortion rights nationwide after the end of Roe v. Wade. Harris said the support from Cheney and other Republicans should not be taken as a sign of her softening her commitment to abortion rights. "Joe Biden is an extremely accomplished, experienced and capable in every way that anyone would want if they’re president," Harris said.

California, Colorado and Hawaii will soon allow their residents to vote on ballot measures that would remove language from their state constitutions prohibiting same-sex marriage. The landmark 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling, guaranteeing same-sex couples across the country the right to marry, makes these state bans unenforceable. However, these ballot measures seek to proactively protect these marriage rights should Obergefell ever be overturned. Without Obergefell, there is federal legislation that would keep same-sex marriage rights mostly, but not entirely, intact: the Respect for Marriage Act. It’s a personal issue for LGBTQ couples who had to navigate a time when same-sex marriage wasn’t legal or straightforward.

French media and ad groups are calling on Apple to suspend its new "Distraction Control" feature, Business Insider is exclusively reporting. AdvertisementA group of French trade associations representing around 800 companies in the advertising and media sectors has sent an open letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook, calling for the tech giant to suspend the rollout of the iPhone's new "Distraction Control" feature. Distraction Control, which became available with iOS 18 this fall, allows users of the iPhone's Safari browser to hide elements on webpages like images, pop-ups, or ads. The letter urges Apple to suspend the rollout of Distraction Control and to provide technical documentation about its functionalities and any planned updates. AdvertisementAppleInsider later reported Apple had changed the name of the feature from Web Eraser to Distraction Control and updated it to include a popup explaining that it would "not permanently remove ads."

CNN —The US Army has been ordered by a federal judge to release records related to former President Donald Trump’s controversial August visit to Arlington National Cemetery by Friday at the latest. The expedited release is a result of a lawsuit by American Oversight, a non-partisan watchdog nonprofit advocating for the release of government records. The group submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for any records relating to interactions between Trump campaign staff and the employee. CNN has asked the Army and the Trump campaign for comment. The incident also prompted the Army to issue the unusually sharp rebuke of the Trump campaign.

He sat down with BI to talk about the race, the national debt, abortion, and the state of his party. In an era where college-educated voters have been bleeding out of the GOP, Schweikert is increasingly an outlier, and he knows it. In order to keep looking like his district, Schweikert — a one-time conservative rabble-rouser who rode his way into Congress during the 2010 Tea Party wave — has had to make some changes. But now that Schweikert's sharing the ballot with Trump, he's not sweating that either. But while Democrats are hoping the state-level vote will boost turnout on their side and remind voters of Republicans' opposition to abortion, Schweikert sees it differently.

But Donald Trump’s threats are not ordinary, either. He has imprecisely but repeatedly invoked the government’s licensing of broadcast TV airwaves and has said on at least 15 occasions that certain licenses should be revoked. Trump’s threats against CBS have been particularly intense in recent weeks. The threat from any politician to revoke a broadcast license simply because they disagree with the station’s content undermines this basic freedom.”Many of Trump’s threats conflate national networks and local stations. Ron DeSantis penned the cease-and-desist letters sent by Florida’s health department threatening to criminally prosecute local TV stations over their airing of an abortion rights ad, the department’s former general counsel said in court documents. “I did not draft the letters or participate in any discussions about the letters prior to October 3,” Wilson wrote. Spokespersons for DeSantis and the Florida Department of Health did not immediately respond to CNN requests for comment. Wilson’s allegations come after local TV stations began airing an ad by Floridians Protecting Freedom, the group behind the state’s “Yes on 4 Campaign,” promoting a ballot measure seeking to overturn the state’s six-week abortion ban by enshrining abortion rights in the state’s constitution. Local TV stations also received support from FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, who said earlier this month that “threats against broadcast stations for airing content that conflicts with the government’s views are dangerous and undermine the fundamental principle of free speech.”

Hanoi, Vietnam AP —Vietnam elected Luong Cuong, a military general, as its new president on Monday, the fourth official to fill the largely ceremonial role in 18 months. The role of the general secretary is the most powerful position in Vietnam while the presidency is mostly ceremonial and involves meeting foreign dignitaries. Vietnam's Luong Cuong takes his oath as Vietnam's President during the autumn opening session at the National Assembly in Hanoi on October 21, 2024. When he became the new general secretary, he promised to maintain the anti-corruption fight. “The installation of Luong Cuong as president is yet another example of the expansion of Vietnam’s police state,” he said.

The Supreme Court is visible on July 29, 2024 in Washington, DC. In an op-ed in The Washington Post, U.S. President Joe Biden laid out his proposed reforms to the Supreme Court including 18 year term limits for Supreme Court Justices and a new code of ethics for the court ahead of a speech tonight at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas. Lawyers for Democratic President Joe Biden's administration had urged the Supreme Court to turn away the appeal, arguing that the plaintiffs lacked the required legal standing to sue the agency and that their claims are foreclosed by Supreme Court precedent. The current Supreme Court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, has taken an expansive view of presidential powers in recent years and has shown skepticism toward broad authority for federal agencies. This case gives the conservative justices a chance to rein in or depart from Humphrey's Executor.

CNN —More than 100 soccer players from the women’s game have signed an open letter to FIFA, urging the sport’s world governing body to end its sponsorship deal with Saudi oil and gas company Aramco. In April this year, FIFA announced a four-year global partnership with the majority state-owned oil giant, giving it sponsorship rights to the 2026 men’s World Cup and the 2027 Women’s World Cup. “The Saudi authorities trample not only on the rights of women, but on the freedom of all other citizens too,” the letter, addressed to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, said. Last year, it produced an average of 12.8 million barrels of oil a day, far more than any other company. US oil and gas companies combined, however, produce more than Saudi Arabia, according to a 2023 analysis from the US Energy Information Administration.
