The family of a woman shot dead by a former New Mexico police officer has reached a $20 million settlement with the city that employed him, ahead of his murder trial next year. A minutes-long interaction takes place between the three and Gomez eventually leaves the vehicle to speak with the officer. After returning to the vehicle, Gomez then attempts to flee the scene and Hernandez fires at least three shots into the vehicle. Shannon Kennedy, attorney for Gomez’ family, said in a statement to the Las Cruces Sun-News that Gomez’s parents, children and siblings are still mourning her loss. "They are grateful to the City of Las Cruces for recognizing the injustice of Teresa’s death," Kennedy said.

MANILA, the Philippines — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vowed Monday to fight back against what he called reckless and troubling threats against him, speaking out after his estranged vice president said he would be assassinated if she herself were killed. “If planning the assassination of the president is that easy, how much more for ordinary citizens?” he said. Sara Duterte told reporters she had yet to hear the president’s statement but she recalled the 1983 assassination of former Senator Benigno Aquino, for which she blamed the Marcos family, without giving proof. “The whole nation fought back when their family killed Benigno Aquino Jr.,” Duterte told reporters. Rodrigo Duterte told the hearings that he was solely responsible for the bloody crackdown and has urged the ICC to “hurry up” with its investigation.

President-elect Donald Trump on Monday said his incoming administration would slap new tariffs on imported goods from Mexico, Canada and China, solidifying a key campaign promise that could have a major impact on trade. Trump said that he would also seek to impose additional tariffs on China. Mexico and Canada are the United States’ top two trading partners, accounting for nearly 30% of trade volumes. Embassies for Canada, China and Mexico did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday night. The tariffs floated by Trump would upend one of the biggest economic deals of his first term.

Police, reporters and curious onlookers soon flooded the neighborhood as audiences started following the highly publicized case that ended in 1996 with brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez receiving life sentences for the murder of their parents. The Beverly Hills Police Department told CNN they responded to 16 calls to the location in October for traffic complaints regarding tour buses and vans, as well as incidents of trespassing and noise. "Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story" starred Cooper Koch as Erik Menendez and Nicholas Chavez as Lyle Menendez. Aside from faint memories of the brothers practicing tennis overnight and offering tennis lessons to kids in the neighborhood, Josh said the years have worn the brothers and trial out of his memory. “If the Menendez brothers case leads to a resentencing, there’s encouragement to continue this type of fandom, too,” he said.

The price of Bitcoin price retreated further from the psychologically important $100,000 milestone, as investors booked profits from the token's post-U.S. election gains. The world's largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization was trading down 6.2% at a price of $92,446.38 as of 5:55 a.m. Ether, the second-biggest coin, fell 4.2% to $3,346.86 while Solana's sol token dropped 8.9% to trade at a price of $231.88. The entire crypto market capitalization — calculated by multiplying total coins in circulation by price — dropped $182 billion to $3.35 trillion. However, optimism around Trump's pro-crypto policy platform in the leadup to the vote has reignited buzz for digital currencies.

CNN —The morning after Donald Trump was reelected president, Justices Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan began jousting more than usual. More than other justices on their respective sides, conservative Alito and liberal Kagan are sharp-tongued strategic questioners. As usual, Alito and Kagan began referring to each other’s questions but with barely a glance toward the other at their elbow. Skeptical of the litigants’ case, Alito asked their lawyer Deepak Gupta why Huang would have put out financial information that could be quickly exposed as wrong. Then Alito said, “Well, I don’t want to derail … Justice Kagan had a number of hypotheticals, but I don’t want to interrupt that.”Kagan seemed miffed, but only slightly.

The former New York City mayor was in federal court in Manhattan on Tuesday to discuss his continuing failure to give up nearly $11 million worth of personal assets. The forfeiture was meant as a down payment on the $148 million Mr. Giuliani owes to two Georgia election workers for defaming them by claiming, without evidence, that they had helped to steal the 2020 presidential election. But first, Judge Lewis Liman allowed Mr. Giuliani’s lawyers to withdraw from the case. “I’m sorry it came to this,” Kenneth Caruso, one of the Mr. Giuliani’s lawyers, said before he and his co-counsel left the hearing. In a statement on Tuesday, Mr. Caruso said that there had been “a difference of opinion” with Mr. Giuliani but they wished his new counsel “every success.”

Donald Trump ran on the promise of steep government budget cuts, and some industry experts believe money flowing toward HUD could be on the chopping block. The housing agency provides rental assistance for low-income households, administers mortgage insurance to prospective homeowners and enforces fair housing law. During Trump’s first term, his office repeatedly sought to make steep cuts to HUD’s budget, though they never passed Congress. If Trump successfully implements budget cuts “there will be longer waiting lists for housing vouchers. Liz Osborn, the vice president of policy at Enterprise Community Partners, a nonprofit focused on home access and affordability, said that HUD budget cuts in Trump’s second term aren’t a guarantee, though.

The federal elections case led to a Supreme Court ruling granting a president limited immunity for official acts. This is likely to reinforce Trump’s belief that he will have almost unchecked authority and will therefore reverberate through the next four years and generations to come. And by voting the way they did, Americans effectively exonerated him in the federal cases — on charges that could have landed him in jail. On page 273 of her memoir, Angela Merkel admits she made a mistake. In a 2003 guest essay for The Washington Post, she attacked him for criticizing the impending American invasion of Iraq: “Schröder doesn’t speak for all Germans,” the headline ran. Strangely, the mistake Ms. Merkel acknowledges is not her support for the Iraq war, even though she now thinks the invasion was wrong. After three years away, Ms. Merkel is stepping back onto the world stage. But she isn’t ready to say “sorry.”

A Republican senator is blocking the promotion of Lt. Gen. Christopher T. Donahue, the commander of U.S. troops in the final days of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, in what could be the first salvo in a Trump administration war against America’s generals. Senator Markwayne Mullin, Republican of Oklahoma, put a hold on General Donahue’s promotion to four stars, or general, after his nomination was sent to the Armed Services Committee last week, officials said. Sabrina Singh, a spokeswoman for the Pentagon, told reporters on Monday that the Defense Department was “aware” of the hold. General Donahue was the last American service member to depart Afghanistan as Taliban fighters took control on Aug. 31, 2021. A decorated former Delta Force commander, Army Ranger and paratrooper with multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, he was recently selected to lead the U.S. Army’s Europe Command as the war in Ukraine heads into its fourth year.
