Tim Riegel brought in $169,000 selling 275-pound fire pits in the last 12 months. Six months ago, Tim Riegel bent over his computer, reviewed his monthly earnings statement and saw that his highly lucrative side hustle was making less money. Within six months, freight trucks were delivering his products to Etsy buyers across the U.S. and Canada. I'm constantly looking at my competitors — not just on Etsy, but throughout the U.S. — to see who's making similar types of pits, and their pricing. I'm sure people can replicate it, if they have similar skills — like welding, creativity and the know-how to source the steel.

Bailey runs an Etsy store that makes about $14,000 a month selling digital tumbler designs. So I quit my job and started an Etsy store called Bailey Designed Co., where I sell custom tumbler designs. In January 2022, I pivoted from print-on-demand products to digital productsI was faced with pandemic supply-chain issues, and I also saw a lot of successful sellers on Etsy who were selling just digital designs. In January, I started my own online courses for people who want to sell digital products without a design background. AI has helped me earn more because it's increased my productivity and volume of designs — and more volume equals more sales.

Etsy bought Elo7 and Depop at a time when tech valuations were sky-high. Etsy disclosed that it had sold Elo7, the Brazilian online marketplace it acquired in July 2021 for $217 million, to fellow Brazilian online marketplace Enjoei for an undisclosed amount. What's next for Etsy's portfolio of brandsFollowing the sale of Elo7, Etsy's portfolio will include its main marketplace, Depop, and Reverb, an online marketplace for musical instruments. But like Elo7, Depop has had some challenges with growth once the pandemic-related e-commerce boom ended, and it is also not profitable. Growing up, my parents believed money was hard to come by and that nobody likes their job. For instance, I had trouble saying "no" to work, worked myself to the point of exhaustion, and tended to stockpile funds so I would be ready for any lull. It took quite an adjustment for me not to feel obliged to work 40 hours a week, or that I needed to adhere to traditional working hours. I've also expanded how I make money through working on a book that I'll be self-publishing and starting an Etsy store selling stickers and stationery. For instance, some of my top values are increasing my own financial literacy, financial security, and opportunities to be creative and help others.

Some sellers face issues when trying to complete Amazon's verification process. The company recently told third-party sellers on its marketplace that they have only a few days to complete an identity verification process before the e-commerce giant stops paying them. Some Amazon merchants have been scrambling to complete the process, which has been plagued with errors. Other brands were acquired in recent years and had to hunt down the original owners of the Amazon account. He said that about 40% of Seller Interactive's roughly 500 partner brands faced issues at some point during the INFORM verification process.

Jaden Urbi | CNBCHow laid-off workers use side gigs as a bridgeWorkers who have a side hustle in the "online platform economy" — sites such as Airbnb, Etsy, Uber or TaskRabbit, for example, that help connect them with customers and facilitate payment — were more likely to have received unemployment than wage-only workers, according to a 2019 study of IRS data between 2009 and 2016. Researchers noted that other studies have found that kind of gig work can help "smooth income around shocks like job loss." Money is a big reason why many people take on side hustles, but there are non-financial reasons why people try side jobs too. "Side hustlers are much more likely to view this extra income as essential, rather than a passion project or a way to get ahead financially." In the April survey, 39% of US adults said they do something "to earn extra income on the side" outside of their primary income source. For example, people may want to make extra money outside of a main job to put toward paying off debt. One full-time worker who tries side hustles told Insider he does his side hustle work during some nights.

As a result of the change, more taxpayers are likely to receive Form 1099-K, which reports third-party business payments to the IRS. Some lawmakers are pushing to increase the reporting threshold, so it could change further. However, regardless of the tax reporting threshold, it's important to remember P2P business payments have always been taxable, experts say. Here are some additional tips to consider before the reporting change in January. An accounting system may also make it easier to track business expenses, which may be deducted to reduce taxable income, Guarino said.
