Bitcoin is not expected to retest its record until later this year, but data shows this correction could get uglier before a recovery begins — similar to how the cryptocurrency fared between two all-time highs in 2021. A bitcoin valuation indicator, CryptoQuant's Bitcoin Profit and Loss Index, is currently hovering around its own 365-day moving average. "Bitcoin is at a level where a local bottom can form or a major 'summer of 2021' style correction can occur," said Julio Moreno, CryptoQuant's head of research. "Prices have typically bottomed out when traders' margins touch extremely negative levels as seen currently." Bitcoin is currently retesting key support at $57,000 for a third day after sliding below that level last week.

About one in five Gen Zers, or 22%, say a lack of affordable starter homes poses as a barrier towards homeownership, according to a new report. Some believe fixer-upper homes might be the answer to the issue. More than half, 57%, of Gen Zers polled said they are willing to put an offer on a fixer-upper, according to a new report by Clever Real Estate. The site surveyed 1,000 Gen Z adults 18 and older; 126 were homeowners and the remaining 874 do not own a home. To that point, of the 40% of Gen Z homeowners who did buy a fixer-upper, about 27% regret it, the report found.

watch nowHousing inflation has remained stubbornly high even as inflation in the broad U.S. economy has cooled significantly from peak levels during the pandemic era. At a high level, "shelter" inflation is a measure of U.S. rental prices, said Jessica Lautz, deputy chief economist at the National Association of Realtors. Why CPI shelter inflation has fallen slowlyThe pullback in shelter inflation has been slower than expected, economists said. How the CPI reflects homeownershipThe shelter inflation index is meant to measure the average cost of housing in the U.S. economy, J.P. Morgan's Seydl said. "When it comes to the CPI, [shelter] does not mean the cost for homes for purchase," said the NAR's Lautz.

The equipment issue on the spacecraft could result in a lengthy delay of the mission, Europa Clipper, which NASA classifies as “flagship,” a designation for its most scientifically significant endeavors. Experts say that if the spacecraft launches in October, as scheduled, it may fall short of its scientific objective of assessing whether anything could live on Europa. At issue is the ability of the transistors, the electric switches that are the building blocks of computer chips and other electronics, to resist the powerful radiation of the Jovian system. Space is awash in radiation caused by forces such as cosmic rays and solar eruptions, and every spacecraft requires some level of radiation protection. But Europa orbits inside a particularly perilous region of space called the Jovian radiation belt, where conditions can be over 50 times more radioactive than those found around Earth.

Cars that run on hydrogen emit zero carbon at the tailpipe, but 96% of the world’s hydrogen is still derived from fossil fuels like methane gas. That makes most hydrogen-powered cars much more polluting than battery electric vehicles, or EVs, and only marginally cleaner than traditional combustion engine cars. Toyota is supplying the Game’s official fleet, which includes 500 Mirai cars and 10 coaches that run on hydrogen, as well as 1,150 EVs, to ferry athletes around. It is also one a few major automakers betting on hydrogen-powered vehicles, as well. Hydrogen vehicles have so far failed to take off as a popular choice for consumers, and very little infrastructure to refuel with hydrogen exists.

Expressing himself for the first time three days after deadlocked legislative elections, President Emmanuel Macron of France said on Wednesday that “a little time” would be needed to build a “broad gathering” of what he called “republican forces” able to form a coalition government. Just 16 days from the opening of the Paris Olympics, it was unclear whether Mr. Macron had in mind a delay that would mean no new government was in place when the games begin. For now he has asked Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, whose resignation he rejected, to continue in a caretaker capacity. In a letter to the French people, made public before its scheduled publication on Thursday in regional newspapers, Mr. Macron said of the election he abruptly called last month: “nobody won it.” That seemed certain to irk the New Popular Front, a resurgent left-wing alliance that came in first with about 180 seats in the National Assembly. The alliance was well short of the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority, and was not victorious in the sense of having the means to govern, but the New Popular Front’s leaders said they believed the group won and have said it would name its choice for prime minister this week.

A new report from Moody's on Wednesday warns that generative AI and deepfakes are among the election integrity issues that could present a risk to U.S. institutional credibility. In a letter to Rosenworcel, it encouraged the FCC to delay its decision until after the elections because its changes would not be mandatory across digital political ads. Some social media platforms have already self-adopted some sort of AI disclosure ahead of regulations. Google requires all political ads with modified content that "inauthentically depicts real or realistic-looking people or events" to have disclosures, but doesn't require AI disclosures on all political ads. Thirteen states have laws on election interference and deepfakes, eight of which were enacted since January.

A handful of states, including Texas and Nevada, have set up dedicated systems designed to restore tenants to their homes after an illegal lockout. BI reviewed two years' worth of lockout cases from the department and found city lawyers routinely dismissed tickets, often without documenting why. Bridget Bennett for Business InsiderThat afternoon, Brown had three cases on his docket in which tenants were alleging they'd been illegally locked out and dozens of cases in which landlords were seeking formal evictions. In 2022, Miami-Dade County passed a tenant's bill of rights that underlines the illegality of lockouts and limits a landlord's ability to harass tenants.

The combination of recent Supreme Court rulings on presidential power with the Democratic Party’s nomination crisis in the wake of Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance has significantly improved Donald Trump’s prospects — not only his odds of once again becoming president, but also of enacting a sweeping authoritarian agenda. Trump’s debt to the six-member conservative majority on the Supreme Court is twofold. First, their delay. By waiting until the last day of the court’s term to issue their decision on Trump’s immunity claims, the justices effectively prevented prosecution of federal criminal charges against him before the election. “By shielding Donald Trump from standing trial before a jury in two of his felony cases,” Michael Podhorzer, a former political director of the AFL-CIO, writes in a post on his Substack, Tipping the Scales, “Trump’s three appointments to the Supreme Court, along with the even more MAGA Justices Alito and Thomas and Judge Aileen Cannon, have already irreparably interfered in the 2024 election.”Second, the substance of the July 1 ruling in Trump v. United States has convinced Trump and his allies that they will face few legal obstacles if they pursue a radical reconstruction of government — a “second American Revolution,” in the words of one loyalist — if Trump regains the White House on Nov. 5.

The New Zealand dollar edged higher ahead of the central bank's rate decision, with traders on alert for any signals on the timing for policy easing. In the first day of his testimony to Congress overnight, Powell said a rate cut is not appropriate until the Fed gains "greater confidence" inflation is headed toward the 2% inflation target. Traders lay about 73% odds for a rate cut by September, slipping from 76% a day earlier. New Zealand's kiwi added 0.1% to $0.6131, but staying mostly flat this week after pulling back sharply from Monday's three-week high of $0.6171. Giuliani’s bankruptcy attorneys and his spokesman didn’t provide additional comment to CNN for this story. They want the bankruptcy judge on Wednesday to throw him out of bankruptcy court. CNN —A year ago, NATO heads of state gathered in Vilnius, Lithuania, for their annual summit. He called NATO’s unwillingness to establish a concrete timeframe for Ukraine’s membership “unprecedented and absurd,” causing consternation in the Biden administration and nearly derailing the summit. Several key NATO members, however, haven’t been especially eager to come to the defense of Ukraine. Why would Putin consider a ceasefire or diplomatic settlement with Kyiv if he knew that NATO membership for Ukraine was just around the corner? Biden should tell Zelensky point-blank that NATO membership is a fool’s errand — and while he’s at it, he ought to apologize to all Ukrainians, for waiting so long to state the obvious.
